Definitions

  • the invention relates to an outwardly openable window or door structure comprising a frame and a sash provided with a plate-shaped element, such as a glass pane, which sash and frame are hingedly connected and are provided with a locking mechanism including a pasquil system which is at least partly located in a hollow part of the sash.
  • Window and door structures must fulfil various criteria, especially in relation to insulating, such that the temperature and humidity within the building in which the window or door is mounted can be kept at substantially constant levels independently of the outside weather. Furthermore, it is important that the window or door structure provides resistance against burglary by forcing the window or door structure open. Also, in recent years the demand for win- dow or door structures that appear visually attractive and fit quiet into the building has increased.
  • a window structure of the kind mentioned in the opening paragraph is known from EP-A1-627 539 that discloses an outwardly openable hinged window comprising a sash with a pasquil system located in a glazing bead with latches that are adapted to engage latch plates provided on the frame.
  • the glazing bead is arranged at the inner surface of the glass pane and constitutes the part of the sash that abuts on the frame when the window is in its closed position. In the closed position the innermost surface of the glazing bead is fully visible between the frame and the glass pane, and the handle of the pasquil system protrudes directly from the glazing bead.
  • the glazing bead with the pasquil system forms a visually "disturbing" element between the frame and the glass pane with visible sealing members located on each side of the glazing bead, i.e. sealing members that seals against the glass pane and the frame, respectively.
  • sealing members located on each side of the glazing bead, i.e. sealing members that seals against the glass pane and the frame, respectively.
  • a handle mounted on the opening element i.e. the sash
  • all configurations have until now included a glazing bead or another part of the sash with the pasquil system that is visible when the structure is in its closed position.
  • the hollow part with the pasquil system is a glaz- ing bead which forms part of the sash. This feature is generally well-known in the art and has proven to satisfy the requirements of strength and durability.
  • the pasquil system preferably comprises a rotatable handle extending through the flange of the frame. Thereby the handle is operatable form the inside.
  • the handle may be attached to the frame provided there is provided engagement means for interconnecting the handle with the pasquil system in the sash, when the window or door structure is in its closed position.
  • the handle is secured to the glazing bead and an indentation is provided in the flange of the frame for receiving a part of the handle when the structure is in the closed position.
  • the handle can be used both to unlock the locking mechanism and to physically push the sash to an open position.
  • the pasquil system comprises at least one slidable striking plate with a keyhole for receiving an undercut tap mounted on the frame.
  • the number of moveable parts can be reduced to a minimum.
  • the slidable striking plate is preferably located within a glazing bead, and an opening is provided in the glazing bead for receiving the undercut tap. In this manner the pasquil system is concealed within the glazing bead, and only one or more taps protruding from the frame are visible when the structure is opened.
  • the pasquil system may comprise at least one swingable latch, and a latch plate for receiving the latch is mounted in a groove provided in the recess outside the flange of the frame.
  • an outer peripheral surface of the sash is substantially aligned with an outer peripheral surface of the frame. This entails that a very slim design of the structure can be obtained, since the frame does not extend further outwards than the sash.
  • the engagement parts of the locking mechanism are provided between an inwardly facing side of the sash and an outwardly facing side of the frame. Since the wall into which the structure is mounted covers this interface between the sash and the frame access to the parts of the locking mechanism is made very difficult.
  • a peripheral part of the sash extends into close vicinity with the frame.
  • Fig. 1 shows schematically a window structure according to the invention
  • Fig. 2 shows a cross-section through a lower part of a first embodiment of the structure shown in Fig. 1 ;
  • Fig. 3 shows another cross-section through a lower part of the first embodiment of the structure shown in Fig. 1 ;
  • Fig. 4 shows in perspective a portion of the lower part of the first embodiment of the structure shown in Fig. 1 ;
  • Fig. 5 shows a cross-section through a lower part of a second embodiment of the structure shown in Fig. 1 ;
  • Fig. 6 shows a cross-section through a lower part of a third embodiment of the structure shown in Fig. 1.
  • Fig. 7 shows in perspective a glazing bead for receiving a pasquil system
  • Fig. 8 shows elements of the pasquil system in an alternative embodiment.
  • Fig. 1 shows schematically a structure 1 according to the invention.
  • the structure 1 is an outwardly openable window comprising a sash 2 and a frame 3 that are interconnected by hinges at the upper edge.
  • the invention is not limited to a structure that is hinged at the upper edge, but is also applicable in window or door structures that are hinged at the sides or even at the lower edge.
  • the invention will be described with reference to the structure 1 shown in Fig. 1.
  • the sash 2 is provided with a plate-shaped element that may be a glass pane 4 if the structure 1 is a window or a glazed door. Alternatively, the plate- shaped element may be a non-transparent panel if the structure 1 is a blind window or a blind door.
  • a handle 20 is arranged at the lower edge of the sash 2, which handle 20 is connected to a locking mechanism that will be described in more detail below. The handle 20 is rotatable about a horizontal axis and is arranged to lock and unlock the locking mechanism when the structure 1 is closed.
  • Fig. 2 shows schematically an enlarged view of a cross-section of a lower part of the structure 1 in a first embodiment of the invention.
  • the sash 2 comprises an L-shaped, profiled element having a front part 2a and a peripheral part 2b that extends externally around the periphery of the glass pane 4.
  • the glass pane 4 comprises two window glasses 4a,4b which form a double- glazing unit that is mounted in the sash 2 and is supported by means of a glazing bead 5 that is provided on the interior side of the sash 2.
  • the glazing bead 5 is preferably made of plastics and is provided with a flap 11 that extends towards the centre of the interior window glass 4b.
  • the flap 11 may, on the side facing the window glass 4b, be coloured or provided with coloured tape such that it appears quiet when the structure is seen from the out- side through the glass pane 4.
  • a sealing member 7 for sealing between the sash 2 and the frame 3 is connected to the glazing bead, preferably by co- extrusion. With a co-extruded sealing member 7 and glazing bead 5 expedient mounting of the glazing bead 5 and sealing member 7 is obtained, since both elements are mounted at the same time without any risk of missing parts. In a closed position of the structure the flap 11 conceals the sealing member 7 when viewed from the outside through the glass pane 4.
  • the structure 1 shown in Fig. 2 has a very slim design in which the outer peripheral surface 27 of the sash 2 is aligned with the outer peripheral surface 28 of the frame 3. This means that the sash 2 is located fully in front of the frame, and any engagement means of a locking mechanism is located between an inwardly facing side 29 of the sash 2 and an outwardly facing side 30 of the frame 3.
  • the peripheral part 2b of the sash 2 of profiled metal elements has no inwardly extending parts on the inner side of the glass pane 4. This means that there is a relatively large dis- tance between the peripheral part 2b of the sash 2 and the clearing of the structure, which entails that the risk of formation of condensing water on the inner surface of the glass pane 4 is reduced.
  • the structure 1 comprises a weather stripping 12 arranged between the sash 2 and the frame 3.
  • the weather stripping 12 is arranged at the outer surfaces of the sash 2 and the frame 3.
  • the weather stripping 12 is preferably also co-extruded with the glazing bead 5 like the sealing member 7.
  • the weather stripping 12 provides sealing against entrance of wind and water from the outside and furthermore provides an effi- cient noise reduction.
  • the frame 3 which may be made of wood, metal, plastics or a composite material, has a generally rectangular cross-section, but is at its upper part provided with an integrated flange 6 that protrudes towards the glass pane 4 and abuts on the sealing member 7 when the structure 1 is closed as shown.
  • a recess 13 is formed outside the flange 6, which recess 13 in accordance with the invention is adapted to receive a part of the sash 2 with a pasquil system when the structure 1 is in its closed position.
  • the recess 13 is in shown embodiment provided with a continuous groove 14 that is adapted to receive parts of the locking mechanism when the window or door structure 1 is in its closed position.
  • the continuous groove 14 may be replaced by a number of discrete grooves adapted to receive the parts of the locking mechanism.
  • Fig. 2 shows a cross-section of the structure 1 where no fittings of the locking mechanism is present in the frame 3.
  • Fig. 2 shows however, that the glazing bead 5 is provided as a hollow element in which a pasquil system of the locking mechanism is provided.
  • a cross-section of a longitudinal rod 21 connecting the handle 20 with locking latches or with striking plates (to be described below) is seen in the hollow glazing bead 5.
  • Fig. 3 shows a cross-section of the structure 1 at a location where a locking latch 22 is movable between a locking position in which it protrudes from the glazing bead 5 and an unlocking position in which it is retracted into the glazing bead 5.
  • the latch 22 is shown in it locking position and it is shown how it engages a latch plate 23 mounted in the groove 14 in the recess 13 outside the flange 6 of the frame 3.
  • the latch 22 is rotatable in the horizontal plane, and it is preferably hook-shaped (not shown) such that it positively engages the latch plate 23 when it is in the locking position as shown in Fig. 3.
  • the latch plate 23 comprises an eye or the like that the hook-shaped latch 22 engages such that the sash 2 and the frame 3 are prevented from being disengaged by forcing the sash 2 horizontally outwards.
  • Figs 4 and 5 show an alternative embodiment of the locking mechanism in which the pasquil system comprises a slidably arranged striking plate 31 that is adapted to receive an undercut tap 32 that is mounted on the frame 3.
  • the striking plate 31 is arranged to slide in a direction perpendicular to the paper, and the glazing bead 5 is provided with an opening 33 for receiving the undercut tap 32. Since numerous elements of the structure shown in Figs 2 and 3 can also be found in Figs 4 and 5 the same reference numerals are used for same parts, even if they differ in details.
  • Fig. 5 shows the striking plate 31 which is connected to the slidable longitudinal rod 21 of the pasquil system and the undercut tap 32 in more detail.
  • the striking plate 31 is provided with a keyhole 34 comprising an enlarged opening and a narrow slot.
  • the foremost part of the undercut tap 32 is inserted through the enlarged opening, and the striking plate 31 is then displaced to the right in Fig. 5 whereby the annular groove 35 of the undercut tap 32 engages the slot of the keyhole in the striking plate 31.
  • a wedged portion 36 is arranged on the striking plate 31 for ensuring a correct compression of the sealing member 7 and the weather stripping 12, when the sash 2 is closed in relation to the frame 3.
  • the sash 2 is provided with a handle 20 that is connected to the pasquil system located in the glazing bead 5.
  • the arrangement of the handle 20 is shown in Fig. 6 that shows a part of the structure 1 with the sash 2 in an open position. It is seen that the handle 20 is secured to the glazing bead 5, and it is indicated by the double arrow P that it is rotatable about a horizontal axis.
  • the flange 6 on the frame 3 is provided with an indentation 24 with a configuration that is complementary to the configuration of the lower part of the handle 20.
  • Figs 7 and 8 show schematically cross-sections of alternative configurations of the structure 1 in which the invention is applicable. Only the rod 21 of the pasquil system is shown in these embodiments, and a person skilled in the art can easily realise how to incorporate the whole pasquil system in accor- dance with the invention. Since numerous elements of the structure shown in Figs 2-6 can also be found in Figs 7 and 8 the same reference numerals are used for same parts, even if they differ in details.
  • Fig. 7 shows a structure 1 in which the frame again is provided with a flange 6 that protrudes towards the glass pane 4 forming a recess 13 outside the flange 6.
  • a profiled metal element 25 is mounted in the recess 13, which element 25 in the closed position of the structure 1 closes the recess 13 at the outermost edge of the frame 3 and sash 2.
  • the element 25 is provided with a weather stripping 12 that provides sealing against entrance of wind and water from the outside and furthermore provides an efficient noise reduction.
  • latch plates for receiving the latches of the pasquil system or taps for being received by striking plates may be formed as a part of the element 25 (not shown).
  • Fig. 8 shows another structure 1 in which the frame is provided with a flange 6 that protrudes towards the glass pane 4 forming a recess 13 outside the flange 6.
  • the sash 2 is made of a U-shaped profiled metal element which does not require a separate glazing bead.
  • the surface of the sash 2 facing the frame 3 is provided with a continuous groove 26 that is adapted to receive the pasquil system (only the rod 21 is shown). Latch plates for receiving the latches of the pasquil system or taps for being received by striking plates may again be secured to the frame 3 in the recess 13.
  • the profiled metal element that constitutes the sash 2 is provided with a thermal break (not shown) such that no coldness is transferred from the sash 2 to the interior side of the glass pane 4.
  • a thermal break (not shown) such that no coldness is transferred from the sash 2 to the interior side of the glass pane 4.
