Abstract

The invention concerns a product mixture for the feeding of sows, said the product mixture contain­ing crushed flax, additional fiber and salts and/or other organic fodder raw materials. The invention also concerns a method for preparing the product mixture and use of the product mixture for feeding sows in the far­rowing period.

Description

Method for preparing, product mixture and use for feeding sows.
The present invention relates to a product mixture as defined in the preamble of claim 1, a method for making a product mixture as defined in the preamble of claim 9 and use of a product mixture as defined in the preamble of claim 11.
The amount of food given to sows is reduced just before farrowing down to a fodder quantity of about 1.0 kg/day. The low amount of fodder together with farrowing leads to problems such as constipation in sows. Constipation makes farrowing more difficult and reduces the sows' appetite after farrowing. Stomach inactivity and a poor appetite again reduce the milk production and therefore the growth of the pig- lets. Moreover, the weight loss caused by a poor appetite diminishes the fertility of sows.
Earlier solutions for promoting the sow' s stomach activity include physical exercise and various fiber products and salts used separately. The fiber products used include e.g. wheat bran, straw, fibrous oats and commercial salt mixtures (e.g. Karlsbader Salt) .
A problem with prior-art products is that they do not effectively reduce the constipation occur- ring in sows during the farrowing period. A further problem is the very bad flavor of salt mixtures. Uneaten, salt preparations are useless.
The object of the invention is to overcome the above-mentioned drawbacks. A specific object of the invention is to disclose a new type of mixture, in which, by combining an organic raw material and salts, a tasty product that promotes intestinal activity is achieved.
A further object of the invention is to dis- close a product mixture in which salts can be used without their being separated from the rest of the product . As for the features of the invention, reference is made to the claims.
The product mixture of the invention, intended for use as pig feed, contains crushed flax, ad- ditional fiber and salts and/or other organic fodder raw materials.
The crushed flax comprised in the product mixture contains plenty of fiber. Its fiber content is about 37 %. In addition, the fatty acids contained in flax improve immunity and reduce damage arising from bacterial inflammation in the intestine.
In an embodiment of the invention, the additional fiber used in the product mixture consists of bran, preferably wheat bran. The salts contained in the product mixture of the invention are salts, such as sulfates, carbonates and halides, formed by alkali metals and alkali earth, preferably sodium and potassium.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the salts contained in the product mixture are sodium sulfate, sodium chloride, sodium carbonate and potassium chloride .
In an embodiment of the invention, the proportion of crushed flax contained in the product mix- ture is 35 - 70 %, preferably 40 - 60 %, and more preferably 45 - 55 %.
In a further embodiment of the invention, the proportion of additional fiber contained in the product mixture is 30 - 60 %, preferably 35 - 50 %, and most preferably 40 - 45 % of the total weight of the product mixture .
In a further embodiment of the invention, the proportion of salts contained in the product mixture is 3 - 15 %, preferably 5 - 10 %, and most preferably 6 - 9 % of the total weight of the product mixture.

The product mixture of the invention is prepared by first mixing the salts in the crushed flax. The salts attach well to the crushed flax and do not become segregated. After this, additional fiber, such as bran, is added to the mixture of crushed flax and salts, forming a uniform, smooth and fluid mixture. The bran added to the mixture has a favorable effect on the composition of the mixture, which would other- wise be sticky and not very fluid.
The product mixture of the invention is used together with other fodder in the feeding of sows in the farrowing period to prevent constipation of the sow's stomach. Furthermore, the product mixture is used to improve sows' appetite after farrowing.
The product mixture of the invention has the advantage that fiber and salts are combined in the same mixture. A further advantage of the invention is that the crushed flax contained in the product mixture is tasty to the pig, overriding any bad flavor that the salt mixture may have .
Further, the fiber of flax and wheat bran is favorable to intestinal activity.
Further, the crushed flax in the product mix- ture of the invention contains linseed oil, which protects the mucous membranes of the sow's intestine.
In the following, the invention will be described in detail by the aid of an embodiment example . EXAMPLE
On certain experimental farms, field tests were carried out. In the test, sows were given a daily ration of about 100-150 g of a new product mixture. The new product mixture contained 51 % crushed flax, 41.5 % wheat bran, 3.3 % Na2S04, 2.7 % Na2C03, 1.35 % NaCl and 0,15 % KCl . The diet with the new product mixture was started about 1 week before the farrowing, and it was continued for at least 2 weeks after the farrowing, which is the period when the amount of fodder consumed by the sow is at its largest .
From the tests it was evident that the sows liked to eat the new product mixture. In addition, the stomachs of sows fed with the new product mixture re- mained in good working order and no constipation appeared. Further, the sows fed with the new product mixture ate about 1 kg more of other production fodder per day than the sows fed with food not containing the new product mixture . The embodiments of the invention are not restricted to the example described above; instead, they may be varied within the scope of the following claims .

Claims

1. Product mixture for feeding sows, characterized in that the product mixture contains crushed flax, additional fiber and salts and/or other organic fodder raw materials.
2. Product mixture according to claim 1, characterized in that the additional fiber in the product mixture is bran.
3. product mixture according to claim 1 or 2 , characterized in that the bran contained in the product mixture is wheat bran.
4. product mixture according to any one of claims 1 - 3, characterized in that the salts contained in the product mixture are sulfates, carbon- ates and halides formed by alkali metals and alkali earth, preferably sodium and potassium.
5. Product mixture according to any one of claims 1 - 4, characterized in that the salts contained in the product mixture are sodium sulfate, sodium chloride, sodium carbonate and potassium chloride.
6. Product mixture according to any one of claims 1 - 5, characterized in that the proportion of crushed flax contained in the product mix- ture is 35 - 70 %, preferably 40 - 60 %, and more preferably 45 - 55 % of the total weight of the product mixture .
7. Product mixture according to any one of claims 1 - 6, characterized in that the pro- portion of additional fiber contained in the product mixture is 30 - 60 %, preferably 35 - 50 %, and most preferably 40 - 45 % of the total weight of the product mixture .
8. Product mixture according to any one of claims 1 - 7, characterized in that the proportion of salts contained in the product mixture is 3 - 15 %, preferably 5 - 10 %, and more preferably 6 - 9 % of the total weight of the product mixture .
9. Method for preparing a product mixture, characterized in that the salts are first mixed with crushed flax, thus becoming attached to it, whereupon additional fiber is added to the mixture, a uniform, smooth and fluid mixture being thus formed.
10. Method for preparing a product mixture according to claim 9, characterized in that the product mixture contains 35 - 70 % crushed flax, 30 - 60 % additional fiber and 3 - 15 % salts.
11. Use of a product mixture as defined in any one of claims 1 - 8 for feeding sows in the farrowing period.
