Abstract

The main purpose for this invention is to provide an effective steering device for manoeuvring a boat in narrow passages e g when docking at a quay.
The most common arrangement with a conventional boat bottom is that the propeller and propeller house is placed in a thruster tunnel open to both sides of the boat below the water surface.
With more modem boats having a shallower hull profile a more effective solution is to have the propeller assembly lowered down through a recess in the hull bottom in order for it to be able to be below the water surface when required.. This is done by swinging the propeller assembly through a recess in the bottom of the boat as shown in fig 1.
This invention (in fig 1) fulfils the demands described above by having a propeller assembly (1) with a propeller (3) driven by a motor and placed at each end of a carrying arm (4) which is mounted in a pi fixture (A-A) (fig4) with pivoting axles (6) and which therefore can be swung down through the bottom of the boat and placed under the water surface.

Description

    Technical area and background
  • The purpose of this invention is to enable sailing boats and the like to steer sideways directly by the application of side thrust when navigating in confined waters e.g. when docking with a quay or manoeuvring through narrow passages.
  • The conventional method for achieving this is to mount a propeller in a tunnel across the boat and below the waterline. Such a thruster tunnel can be mounted at the bow or the stem of the boat
  • Modem hulls, especially for sailing boats, are often designed with a planing hull, which needs very shallow draft at the bow, which means that a conventional tunnel is often mounted close to or above the water surface (fig 3). To counter this the tunnel can be moved closer to the centre of the boat but this gives a lower turning effect for a given power input.
  • This invention makes it possible to place the propeller under the water surface, even at the shallowest part of the hull, whilst also reducing the volume of internal space required for a conventional thruster tunnel.
  • The invention achieves these objectives by swinging down the propeller and the propeller housing through a recess in the bottom of the boat; thus the propeller will be placed under the water surface (fig 1)

Claims (1)

  1. This steering device (fig 1) is for assisting the steering of boat by swinging down a laterally mounted. propeller assembly from within a recessed housing in the hull of the boat (2). The pivot shaft is (6) held in a retaining-ring (7) and is attached to the main carrying-arm (4). At one end of the carrying arm is the propeller assembly (1) with bevel gearbox, propeller and shroud (where the side forces are taken up by the side steering (11) (fig 5)) and at the other end of carrying arm is a motor. Connecting these ends is a drive shaft (8). The whole system is mounted in a rigid sealed housing (9) with a flexible sealing ring (10) around the carrying arm.
    Characterized by the previously mentioned propeller housing of the steering device (1) with a propeller (3) driven by an engine and carried by an carrying arm (4) swung down around a pivot point (A-A in fig 4) and steered sideways by a adjustable support on the propeller housing (fig 5) and built in a sealed rigid housing (9) with a sealing ring (10) round the carrying arm.
    The device is activated by force from the actuator (12) acting upon the carrying arm yoke (5). Safety of operation is maintained by placing the entire system's pivot point (A-A) forward of the propeller assembly; thus in the event of hitting an obstruction the propeller assembly will swing upwards; together with a hinged lid (13) of the same shape and size as the recess opening which will seal the recess in the bottom.
