Description

A DEVICE FOE INFEED OF BUNDLES OF BANKNOTES FOR
EXAMPLE INTO AN APPARATUS
FIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to an arrangement for feeding bundles of items, such as bundles of banknotes, cheques, forms or similar items, into a machine for further handling or processing of said items. More specifically, the arrangement includes:
An infeed opening through which bundles of said items are fed into the machine;
means for feeding one item at time to a transport path in the machine for further transportation of items in the machine;
and means for providing customers with relevant instructions and information that will enable the machine to be handled correctly.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
In some earlier known banknote machines it is important to ensure that it is always possible to forward a fastened banknote automatically to a reject compartment, so as to prevent the machine from "seizing up" on such occasions or to require the attendance of service personnel in order clean the machine of so-called ruined items.
In other machines it is possible that banknotes deposited by a customer fasten in the depositing part of the machine, therewith requiring the assistance of service personnel in clearing the machine.
Another problem occurs when customers test the ability of the machine to accept poor or badly bundled banknotes. This may reach the extreme where the customer is unable to check the quality of the bundle at all. Cases are known where a customer has left rubber bands, paper clips and folded banknotes in the bundle. Instead of learning how to bundle banknotes properly, customers themselves cause machine stoppages to be on the increase by their lack of interest in bundling banknotes neatly and properly. The object of the present invention is to attempt to eliminate these and other drawbacks.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
In an arrangement of the aforesaid kind there is included between the infeed opening and the feed means an auxiliary device which is adapted to cause items to be transported singly to the feed means.
The arrangement also includes means which when an item fails to be transported to and possibly only partially through the feed means functions to return the bundle of items involved back to the infeed opening, while the information means is caused, at the same time, to deliver to the customer instructions as how the returned bundle of items needs to be rearranged in a proper order.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The invention will now be described in more detail with reference to the schematic figures of the accompanying drawing, in which
Figure 1 is a side view of a machine and shows part of the item feed mechanism included therein;
Figure 2 is a front view showing the infeed opening and the instruction means of said machine: and
Figure 3 illustrates a movement path of a feed plate in said machine.
DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
As will be seen from Figure 1, a machine-housed arrangement of the aforesaid kind includes an infeed opening 10 for the insertion of a bundle of items, e.g. banknotes, from outside the machine, a feed means 11 12 which functions to feed single banknotes to a transport path 11 - 13 - 14 in said machine for further transportation of banknotes therein, wherein said feed means comprises a banknote feeding wheel 11 and a counter-rotating wheel 12, and wherein the transportation path 11 - 13 - 14 includes the banknote feeding wheel 11, the banknote transportation wheels 13 and 14, and further transportation means not shown.
As will be seen from Figure 2, the arrangement also includes instruction means 20 for giving to a customer information and instructions as to how the machine shall be handled correctly.
Figure 3 illustrates schematically the feeding path, forwards and backwards, as a point on a feeder plate 17 that will normally be described cyclically in conjunction with the transportation of banknotes up to the banknote feeding means 11 12 by the feed plate.
Located between the infeed opening 10 and the banknote feeding means 11 - 12 is an auxiliary means 16 - 17 which functions to cause the transportation of banknotes to the feeding means 11 - 12 one at a time. The auxiliary means 16 - 17 comprises a lifting table 16 which functions to lift an inserted bundle of banknotes vertically up to a feed plate 17. When a customer inserts a bundle of banknotes through the infeed opening from outside the machine, the bundle will land on the table 16 and the table then receives lift pulses causing the table to rise vertically together with the bundle of notes. A sensor 19 detects the uppermost banknote in the pile and causes lifting of the table to stop on the one hand, rotation of the feed plate 17 clockwise about an axle 171 down onto the bundle below a protective plate 18 on the other hand, and translatory movement of the plate 17 to the right with an underlying banknote (the uppermost banknote in the bundle). The axle or shaft moves in a horizontal groove 172 and the plate 17 is caused to move to the right by a link coupling consisting of an arm 174 which is pivotal about a movable axle 173 and a link 176 which is pivotal about a fixed axle 175 and which is movably connected to the axle 173.
When the plate 17 carrying a banknote reaches the feed means 11 -12, the infeed wheel 11 feeds the banknote to a following part of the transport path 11 - 13 - 14 and the counter rotating wheel 12 feeds back at the same time any underlying banknote that is stuck to the uppermost banknote or banknotes that are stuck together. If for some reason the uppermost banknote fails to arrive at the entrance to the feed means 11 - 12 or fastens in said entrance or in the feed means 11 - 12 (so-called ruins) the machine is cleared automatically. Because the leading edge of the banknote does not reach as far as separately arranged counter fingers, no counter signal will be emitted. As a result the banknote feeding wheel will change its direction of rotation (to a clockwise direction) and leads the banknote to the left together with the feed plate 17 At the same time the table 16 receives a signal causing the table to move down vertically to starting position at the infeed opening 10, wherewith the rejected banknote or banknotes will fall freely (in disarray) onto the top of the bundle on the plate 17. An instruction device 20 above the opening 10 presents to the customer an instruction message asking the customer to "tidy up" the bundle, the need of which is also clearly apparent to the customer from the disarray in which the uppermost banknote or the uppermost banknotes lies or lie on said bundle. The customer can make a new attempt to deposit his/her banknotes, after having placed the banknotes in order and having removed any elastic bands, banderoles, paper clips used to hold the banknotes together.
Because the banknote feeding plate 17 has a significant width (= a large abutment surface against underlying banknote) compared with the belts or rollers often used conventionally for the transportation of banknote, transportation of the banknote towards the banknote feed means 11 - 12 will take place in the absence of any twisting of the banknote, i.e. in a very distinct and positive fashion, and hence the risk of ruined banknote should be at the absolute minimum.
As will be apparent from Figure 1 , part of the periphery of the banknote feed wheel 11 is coated with a friction enhancing material, namely that part which is active when a banknote is fed through the feed means 11 - 12. The remainder of the wheel periphery has relatively low friction, so that a banknote that is stuck completely or partially to the first mentioned banknote will be held back securely (fed back) by the counter-rotating wheel 12. The function of the feed means 11 - 12 and the function of the auxiliary device (16 - 17) are so synchronised relative to one another that when the feed means commences feeding of an item, the leading edge of the item reaches the beginning 1111 of a friction- coated peripheral part 111 and so that at the end of said feed the trailing edge of the item will be located in the proximity of the end 1112 of the peripheral part coated with said friction material. This results in positive advancement of said item (by means of the friction coated peripheral part 111) on the one hand and also in positive feedback of any accompanying underlying additional item (by means of the counter-rotating wheel 12 which now works against the peripheral part 112 of low friction). In the case of a normal infeed function, banknote are fed to the feed means 11 - 12 one at a time, and when the last banknote has been fed in the table 16 receives a signal causing it to move down to said starting position. At the same time, the feed plate 17 moves to its left hand starting position slightly above the protective plate 18.
Although not shown, the arrangement is connected with a processor which in response to signals or pulses from sensors, keyboards, calculating means, etc., co-ordinate and activate the various functions described above. It will be understood that the arrangement includes the mechanical means required to carry out said functions, such gear wheels, racks, cam discs, belts, etc..
