Description

" COMBINED ACCESSORY FOR TWO-WHEELS VEHICLES "
**********
TECHNICAL FIELD The present invention relates to a multipurpose accessory for a two-wheeled vehicle. More specifically, the invention relates to an accessory designed to be fixed firmly to the vehicle, preferably but not exclusively under the saddle, and equipped with a jaw-like retaining system able to secure to the vehicle objects, such as a cyclist's helmet, which have bars or crosspieces that can be hooked to it. The accessory may also be equipped with a bracket for a suitably sized saddlebag or tool case.
The possibility of applying a simple security system such as a padlock to prevent the lock/unlock lever from being opened also confers anti-theft functions on the accessory according to the invention.
BACKGROUND ART Increased awareness of problems relating to safety has led to a gradual but significant increase in the use of helmets as the main means of protection for users of two- wheeled vehicles.
Indeed, legislation in many countries has made the use of crash helmets compulsory for all two-wheeled vehicles that are powered by a motor.
In the case of bicycles, the main obstacle to the complete adoption of this important accessory is cyclists' reluctance to wear it due to its inconvenience, added to which is the high probability of its being stolen if left on the bicycle when the latter is unattended. Many attempts have been made to make accessories capable of securing a helmet to a bicycle. Most of these are rather complicated and require modifications to the bicycle frame or to the helmet, and nearly all of them interfere with the pedalling motion of the cyclist, which makes them suitable for use only as anti-theft devices.
There is a growing tendency among cyclists to tie the helmet to the handlebars when it is not being worn.
This does not require the installation of any accessory and is relatively simple, although it cannot be used as an anti-theft system and does not always secure the helmet to the bicycle in a stable manner.
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The present invention has for an object to provide an accessory for a two-wheeled vehicle such as a bicycle or motor scooter which is designed to carry and secure an object, especially a crash helmet for cyclists to the vehicle and which, at the same time, can be used to fit other components including, in particular, a saddlebag.
This is achieved by means of an accessory having the features described in the main claim.
The dependent claims describe advantageous embodiments of the invention. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the accessory consists of a main hollow body essentially in the shape of a parallelepiped or a Y and equipped with mounting means enabling it to be secured to the vehicle, preferably but not exclusively under a bicycle saddle. Inside the main body there is a sliding cursor shaped to match the cavity of the main body itself. In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the end of the cursor has two hooked jaws which open when the cursor is pulled out of the guide cavity in the main hollow body and which clamp shut when the cursor is pushed back in.
This actuating mechanism is obtained thanks to the specific internal shape of the main body which matches the shape of the cursor and which guides the movements of the latter . In an especially preferred embodiment of the invention, the movements of the cursor and of the hooked jaws on it may be assisted by springs.
A rack-like toothed surface on the cursor and a lock/unlock lever on the main body enable the cursor to be stopped in a desired position.
According to the present invention, an object such as a cyclist's helmet can be secured by simply tightening it or a part of it between the two hooked jaws or by inserting the two jaws into two adjacent holes or slots in the object, and then pushing the object forward in such a way as to lock the cursor in the main body and causing the two jaws to clamp shut, thus firmly securing the object quickly and easily.
In another embodiment of the invention, the accessory is equipped with a key lock mechanism which prevents the lock/unlock lever from being actuated and which means that the accessory can also be used as an anti-theft device.
An alternative or additional anti-theft feature may consist in providing the ends of the two jaws with a system for accommodating a locking device. For example, the two jaws might have holes in the ends of them to enable a padlock to be fitted. Thus, when the jaws are closed, the object carried cannot be removed.
According to the invention, the main body is also equipped with a bracket on which a suitably sized saddlebag or other component can be mounted.
The accessory according to the invention is compact, easy to fit to the vehicle without encumbering it and is easy and economical to make.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description of an embodiment of the invention, provided purely as a non- restricting example, with reference to the accompanying drawings .
Figure 1 is a perspective side view, slightly from above, of the accessory according to the invention, in the closed position, and having a saddlebag fitted to the bracket.
Figure 2 is a perspective side view, slightly from above, of the accessory according to the invention without the saddlebag. Figure 3 is a perspective side view, slightly from above, of the accessory according to the invention, in the open position, with the cursor and the toothed bar partly withdrawn and the jaws slightly open. Figure 4 is a perspective exploded side view, slightly from above, of the accessory according to the invention.
Figure 5 is a top view of the main body of the accessory, with the cursor and the jaws fully closed. Figure 6 is a top view of the main body of the accessory, with the cursor and the jaws slightly retracted. - Figure 7 is a top view of the main body of the accessory, with the cursor and the jaws in the fully open position.
Figure 8 is a top section view of the main body of the accessory with the jaws open and about to be inserted in the object to be secured.
Figure 9 is a top section view of the main body of the accessory where the cursor has been pushed forward in such a way as to tighten the jaws around the object to firmly secure it.
DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
With reference to the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 denotes in its entirety a multi-purpose accessory according to the invention. Figure 1 shows a multi-purpose accessory 1 comprising a main body 10 to which a bag 50 can be hooked and which comprises a lever 30, two arms 11, a locking and stabilising lever 40 and a cursor 20 to which two arc- shaped jaws 23 are directly connected. Figures 2 and 3 show the accessory of figure 1 without the saddlebag and with the cursor 20 and the jaws 23 in different positions.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the main body 10 (see figure 4) consists of a rectangular section tube 12, whose internal cavity has a square shaped base 16 and which has at the bottom of it a sliding guide 18 running along its full length and designed to accommodate other components or accessories, such as, for example, a saddlebag .
At the sides of the tube there extend two arms 11 which together form a U shape. The inside face of each arm has a guide groove 19 running along its full length and designed to accommodate the cursor plate, while the outside face has an engagement groove 17 and a perforated plate 14, designed to accommodate, respectively, the locking and stabilising bar 40 and the bracket 15 under the saddle.
In this particular embodiment of the invention, two perforated angle plates 13 located at the top of the tube enable the lock/unlock lever 30 to be pivotally mounted. Further, according to the invention, a locking and stabilising lever 40 is mounted on the main body by means of the side brackets 41 in order to support and reinforce the ends of the arms 11.
In this embodiment, the bar 40 also has fitted to it two perforated plates 42 that can be used to accommodate a key lock device such as a padlock and a stop block 43 to prevent the cursor from being pulled out of the main body completely when the lock/unlock lever 30 is raised, or to prevent the movement of the cursor itself by locking the lever 30 using the padlock.
The lever 30 is pivoted to the main body through the connections 32 and a spring enables it to automatically return to the closed position. The stop tooth 31 on the lever 30 engages with the rack teeth 21 on the cursor 20, thus stopping it.
In an especially preferred embodiment of the invention, illustrated in figures 5 to 7 , the cursor 20 comprises a plate 28, whilst a toothed bar 21, fixed to the centre of its upper face, slides inside the main body. On each side of the toothed bar 21, the plate 28 of the cursor 20 has two holes 22 which enable the two jaws 23 to be held securely to the cursor while allowing their opposite ends to swing freely.
According to the invention, the jaws 23 have a curved outer face 24 which is guided by the inner face of the arms 11 of the main body 10.
The inner face 25 bounded by the jaws 23 and by the plate 28 is suitably shaped to accommodate trapezoidal bars or crosspieces such as those normally present on a cyclist's crash helmet. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, when the lock/unlock lever 30 is raised (figs. 5, 6 and 7) a spring located inside the square section 12 pushes the toothed bar 21 outwards together with the plate 28 that is engaged with it. As the cursor is retracted, the jaws 23 slide out of the arms 11 of the main body and are disengaged in such a way that they can move apart. It thus becomes possible to grip the object to be carried.
In an especially preferred embodiment of the multi- purpose accessory according to the invention, the opening out of the jaws as the cursor is retracted can be controlled by a spring or elastic mechanism.
Figures 8 and 9 show how the jaws 23 are inserted into the holes or slots in the object and how the surface of the object is pulled back against the end of the plate 28 when the jaws are clamped shut again. Pushing the object forward causes the cursor 20 to slide back into the main body 10 and to re-engage with the guide grooves 19, thus gradually gripping the object ( figure 13 ) . Once it has reached the clamped position, the cursor 20 is held in place by the action of the tooth 31 on the lever 30 which engages with the toothed bar 21, thus retaining the object easily and securely.
In another embodiment of the invention, when the cursor 20 and the jaws 23 are in the position illustrated in Figure 13, a security system such as a padlock, for example, can be inserted into holes 27 especially made for this purpose in the ends of the jaws 23 to prevent the jaws themselves from being opened. To remove the object, it is sufficient to release the lever 30 to disengage the toothed bar 21, thus enabling the spring to push the cursor 20 out and releasing the jaws 23 so that they can be easily opened to remove the object . The invention is described above with reference to some preferred embodiments of it. However, it will be understood that the invention may be modified and adapted in several ways without departing from the scope of the inventive concept .
