- the invention relates to a direct radiation loudspeaker of the type conventionally comprising a movable membrane attached by its outer periphery to a rigid chassis forming a frame. It relates more particularly to an improvement making it possible to adapt the directivity of such a loudspeaker and more particularly to reproduce the directivity of a rectangular piston.
- An advantage of the invention lies in the fact that the adaptation of directivity of such a loudspeaker makes it possible to couple several loudspeakers in direct radiation, by eliminating interference over a wide frequency range.
- a conventional direct radiation loudspeaker consists of a relatively rigid mobile membrane, light, conical or with exponential section or the like, in the center of which is mounted a coil, mobile inside a magnetic field generated by a magnet.
- the movable membrane is attached by its outer periphery to a rigid frame forming a frame which also constitutes the support of the magnet.
- the frame coincides with what will be designated below an acoustic emission plane beyond which the sound propagates in the external environment.
- One such speaker is one of the most used components in public address systems.
- An electrical signal representative of the sound to be reproduced is applied to the terminals of the coil and the latter moves in the air gap of the magnet.
- Such a speaker has the following characteristics. - If the outline of the frame defined above is circular, the acoustic radiation of the loudspeaker is axisymmetric, that is to say identical in all the planes passing through the axis of the loudspeaker which is also the axis of the voice coil. - The dispersion of the loudspeaker decreases when the frequency increases.
- the invention provides an accessory intended to be fixed to such a loudspeaker in order to modify its characteristics, according to specific needs linked to the design of the acoustic enclosure, at least for a certain frequency range.
- the invention relates to a direct radiation loudspeaker comprising a movable membrane attached by its outer periphery to a rigid frame forming a frame, this frame defining an acoustic emission plane, characterized in that it further comprises a shutter of only a central zone of said emission plane, inside said frame.
- the shutter is positioned in front of a part of the front face of the loudspeaker. It is mechanically fixed on the chassis or on an integral part thereof.
- the fixing means are conventional, screw-nut or the like.
- the shape of the shutter generally depends on the desired results. Overall however, the shutter is placed along a diameter or an axis of symmetry of the frame and typically covers between a third and a half of the front surface of said frame, leaving open two equal parts of said acoustic emission plane, symmetrical with respect to to an axis of symmetry of the shutter.
- the shutter is defined in a sufficiently rigid material, possibly composite, not to be the seat of vibrations. It can for example be made of plastic or wood. It generally admits at least one plane of symmetry containing an axis of the membrane which will be called the first plane of symmetry and, preferably, a second plane of symmetry containing the axis of the membrane and perpendicular to said first plane of symmetry.

- the outer periphery of the membrane is attached to the rigid chassis and more particularly to a frame 21 thereof, with a circular interior contour.
- the frame conventionally includes holes 23 allowing the loudspeaker to be fixed to an acoustic enclosure or similar structure.
- acoustic emission plane the plane P containing the contour of the attachment of the membrane to the frame of the chassis. It is from this plane that sound normally radiates into the air.
- the loudspeaker is further provided with the shutter 25 already mentioned, shaped to close only a central strip of said emission plane limited inside said frame.
- “only” is meant that this shutter is shaped to leave two large openings (Figure 2) in the acoustic emission plane P inside the frame on either side of a first plane of symmetry P1 containing the main axis x'x of the membrane, which is also the axis of displacement of its coil.
- the shape of these two combined openings and the shape of the rear face of the shutter 25 make it possible to redefine or adapt the dispersion characteristics of this loudspeaker in direct radiation.
- the shutter 25 is of rigid structure. As indicated above, it can be made of plastic, wood, or another material, possibly composite. The material is chosen to be as inert as possible, that is to say not to be the seat of parasitic vibrations.
- said first plane of symmetry P1 containing the axis x'x is oriented in a direction parallel to the largest dimension of the closed central strip.
- the shutter also admits a second plane of symmetry P2 containing the axis x'x of the membrane and perpendicular to the first plane of symmetry P1.

- the two curved lateral notches are symmetrical with respect to said first plane of symmetry. Each of them is symmetrical with respect to said second plane of symmetry.
- the curved surface 31 has substantially the same shape as the part of the membrane opposite which it is located. In other words, the curved surface is substantially at all points, at the same distance from the membrane.
- the front face 27 is generally rectangular although the two notches 33 define a narrowing in its middle part.
- the shutter has four fixing holes 35 spaced to come into correspondence with four holes 23 of the frame of the chassis.
- the loudspeaker is arranged as shown in FIG. 2, that is to say so that the central strip covered by the shutter 25 is substantially vertical.
- the shutter widens the dispersion in the vertical plane and reduces it in the horizontal plane.
- this shutter because it reduces the coverage in the horizontal plane, allows to couple several direct radiation speakers horizontally, eliminating interference over a wide frequency range.
- FIG. 8 shows how one can include such a loudspeaker 11 provided with its shutter 25 in a specific acoustic enclosure 40. Each enclosure has a trapezoidal horizontal section. The loudspeakers are placed side by side. This type of assembly makes it possible to couple the speakers 11 without causing interference between them.
- FIG. 6 illustrates other possible variants.
- the shutter 25a is reduced to a very simple shape, it is a rectangular plate coming to cover only a central strip of the emission plane.
