Abstract

A device for attaching an end in the reeling of a wire (8), flexible pipe or similar, on to a drum-like rotating reel (1), in which the first free end portion of the wire (8) is connected to the reel (1) by an adhesive tape (5a) being attached to the reel (1) by means of an adhesive tape dispenser (5), and in which the wire (8) is inserted between the reel (1) and the adhesive tape (5a), so that the adhesive tape (5a) adheres to the wire (8), thereby pulling the wire (8) on to the rotating reel (1), and in which an air nozzle (12), which is arranged to blow the adhesive tape (5a) in towards the reel (1) is disposed downstream of the adhesive tape dispenser (5) and is preferably connected to the adhesive tape dispenser (5).

Description

This invention relates to a device for facilitating the fastening of e.g. a first end portion of a wire to a drum-like reel by means of adhesive tape, especially when a wire is reeled in a reeling machine (US-A- 3 420 459).
As the final operation in the production process, wires and other rope-like objects are reeled, for several reasons, on drum-like reels. The purpose may be to give the wire protection during transport and storage and to facilitate unreeling of the wire at the place of use. Reeling machines for this purpose are available in many variants, capacities and degrees of automation, from manual to fully automated operation.
In machines for automatic operation it has turned out that the attaching of the first wire end portion to the drum-like reel may be difficult to solve in a simple and reliable way. A known method is to insert the wire end through a slot or opening in the drum wall, where it is possibly also secured by a clip. This solution relies on a complex reeling equipment, possibly also an expenditure of attachment clips. In addition, stacking and packing of the completely reeled drum-like reels is complicated by the wire ends projecting from the reels.
In another attaching method, the first end of the cable is connected to the reel by means of adhesive tape. An adhesive tape dispenser, which may be connected to a movable arm, is moved forward to the cylindrical mid portion of a reel, where the adhesive of the adhesive tape attaches the adhesive tape to the mid portion of the rotating reel. The first end portion of the wire to be reeled, is brought forward to the rotating reel, where the end portion of the wire gets caught between the reel and the adhesive tape which is being reeled on. The adhesive of the adhesive tape sticks to the wire end portion, and the wire is pulled on to the reel, after which the adhesive tape is cut and the adhesive tape dispenser returns to its initial idle position.
However, the latter method has turned out to result in a somewhat unreliable connection in that the adhesive of the adhesive tape sometimes does not attach properly to the relatively fatty surface of the reel material. Such an incident results in an unwanted stoppage of the automatic packing machines that the adhesive tape dispenser forms part of.
The object of the invention is to remedy the drawbacks of known technique.
The object is accomplished according to the invention through the features specified in the description below and in the following Claims.
On that side of the adhesive tape dispenser where the adhesive tape is dispensed, a blow-out nozzle is provided according to the invention. The blow-out nozzle is arranged in such a way that an air flow exiting the nozzle strikes the adhesiveless back of the adhesive tape, displacing the tape in a direction out from the adhesive tape dispenser in towards the object that the adhesive tape is meant to attach to.
When the first end of a wire is to be connected to the cylindrical mid portion of a reel, the adhesive tape dispenser is moved forward until it abuts the rotating reel. Adhesive tape is pulled out of the adhesive tape dispenser in that the roller of the adhesive tape dispenser presses the adhesive side of the adhesive tape against the reel. At the same time as the adhesive tape is pressed against the reel, or immediately after that, pressurized air is blown through the nozzle, whereby the adhesive tape is forced towards the reel also after it has left the roller.
This extra support of the adhesive tape towards the reel has the effect that, with great functional reliability, the adhesive tape is attached so well to the reel that it is pulled out from the adhesive tape dispenser.
In the following will be described a non-limiting example of a preferred embodiment visualized in the accompanying drawings, in which:
  • Fig. 1 shows in a schematic perspective view the most essential ones of the components incorporated in a reeling .machine of the kind in question;
  • Fig. 2 shows schematically the reel and the adhesive tape dispenser of Fig. 1 in the initial position;
  • Fig. 3 shows schematically the reel and the adhesive tape dispenser of Fig. 1 as the adhesive tape dispenser has been moved up to the reel, and immediately before pressurized air is supplied to the nozzle;
  • Fig. 4 shows schematically the reel and the adhesive tape dispenser of Fig. 1, after some adhesive tape has been pulled on to the reel, and as the first end of a wire is inserted between the reel and the adhesive tape;
  • Fig. 5 shows schematically the reel and the adhesive tape dispenser of fig. 1 just after the adhesive tape has been cut and the adhesive tape dispenser has started its return movement away from the reel; and
  • Fig. 6 shows schematically the reel and the adhesive tape dispenser of Fig. 1 after the adhesive tape dispenser has been returned into its initial idle position.
  • In the drawings reference numeral 1 identifies a drum-like reel. The reel 1, comprising a cylindrical pipe-like central part 1a and two cheeks 1b, 1c, is supported in a machine frame 9 and driven by a drive 10. A gripping device 2 is attached to a first pivotable arm 3 which is hinged by its lower end portion 4 to the machine frame 9. An adhesive tape dispenser 5 is attached to a second pivotable arm 6 which is hinged by its lower portion 7 to said machine frame 9. All said components 1 to 7 are of embodiments known in themselves. The gripping device 2, the pivotable arms 3, 6 and the adhesive tape dispenser 5 are all pneumatically operated by way of a suitable control program. In Fig. 1 the reference numeral 11 identifies a pneumatic cylinder connected to the frame 9 and arranged to move the arm 3.
    The adhesive tape dispenser 5 is provided with an underlying pressurized air nozzle 12, which is connected through a hose 13 to a pressurized air plant, not shown.
    When a wire 8 is to be reeled on to the reel 1, the reel 1 is put into operation about its own longitudinal axis. The adhesive tape dispenser 5 pivots by means of the arm 6 about its rotational axis 7 into abutment against the pipe-like part 1a of the reel 1, see Fig. 3, in which an adhesive tape 5a present in the adhesive tape dispenser 5 is forced by its adhesive side against the pipe-like part 1a by a pair of rollers 5b located in the adhesive tape dispenser 5. At the same time, or just after the adhesive tape has made contact with the pipe-like reel part 1a, supply of pressurized air to the nozzle 12 is opened, whereby the adhesive tape is pressed against the pipe-like part 1a also after the adhesive tape 5a has left the pair of rollers 5b. Next, the free end portion of the wire 8 is inserted between the adhesive tape 5a and the pipe-like drum part 1a, see Fig. 4. By the fact that the wire 8 is attached to the adhesive tape 5a attached to the rotating reel 1 in this phase, the wire 8 is pulled on to the reel 1. The adhesive tape is cut by a clipping device 5c connected to the adhesive tape dispenser 5, after which the adhesive tape dispenser pivots back into its initial idle position.
    The device according to the invention has turned out to provide a substantially more secure connection of the adhesive tape 5a to the reel 1, and contributes to a substantial reduction in the stoppage time of the packing machines.
