- Some features are provided in automobile audio systems which can partially mitigate the aforementioned problems. For example, an occupant can manually adjust the sound balance to increase the proportional volume to the left or right speakers. Some automobile audio systems have a "driver mode" button which makes the sound optimal for the driver. However, because different listening axes exist for left and right occupants, an adjustment to the balance that satisfies the occupant (e.g., driver) on one side of the automobile will usually make the sound worse for the occupant seated on the other side of the automobile. Moreover, balance adjustment requires manual adjustment by one of the occupants, and it is generally desirable in an automobile to minimize user intervention.
- Another modification made to some automobile audio systems is to provide a center speaker, which reduces the image instability that occurs when the listener is closer to either the left or right speaker when both are reproducing the same mono signal, with the intention of producing a central sound image.
- Other potential approaches which might be taken in an attempt to mitigate the foregoing automotive sound problems include adding more speakers in a greater variety of positions (e.g., at the seat tops). While such techniques can sometimes provide a more pleasing effect, they cannot provide stable imaging as the problems associated with asymmetry described above still remain. - a home theater surround sound system or automobile sound system may be capable of providing quality sound to a greater number of listeners, not all of whom need to be positioned in the center of the speaker arrangement in order to enjoy the playback of the particular audio product.

- the spectral weighting filter in the various embodiments described herein may provide spectral weighting over a band smaller or larger than the 200 Hertz to 2 KHz band. If the selected frequency band for spectral weighting is too large, then saturation may occur or clipping may result, while if the selected frequency band is too small, then the spreading effect may be inadequate. Also, if cross-cancellation is not mitigated at higher frequencies, as it is in the spectral weighting filters illustrated in certain embodiments herein, then a comb filter effect might result which will cause nulls at certain frequencies. Therefore, the spectral weighting frequency band, and the particular spectral weighting shape, is preferably selected to take account of the physical limitations of the speakers and electronic components, as well as the overall quality and effect of the speaker output.
- the pair of closely spaced speakers may be forced to work harder than they would without cross-cancellation, because the cross-mixing of left and right signals requires that the speakers reproduce out-of-phase sound waves. To compensate for this effect, it may, for example, be desirable in some embodiments to increase the size of the amplifier(s) feeding the audio signals to the pair of closely spaced speakers.
- the speakers utilized in the automobile sound system may be passive or active (i.e., with built-in or on-board amplification capability) in nature.

Claims (30)
- Tonsystem (800, 900) zum Empfangen eines Audiosignals des linken Kanals (811, 911, 911') und eines Audiosignals des rechten Kanals (812, 912, 912') von einer Audioquelle, und zum Erzeugen eines breiten, stabilen, synthetischen Stereotonbildes davon, wobei das Tonsystem (800, 900) gekennzeichnet ist durch:eine linke Treibereinheit (824, 825) und eine rechte Treibereinheit (825, 925), die angrenzend an jene angeordnet ist; undeinen Tonprozessor (810), der für Folgendes konfiguriert ist:Empfangen des Audiosignals des linken Kanals (811, 911, 911') und des Audiosignals des rechten Kanals (812, 912, 912') als Eingänge;Erzeugen (940, 942) eines spektral gewichteten Stereodifferenzsignals aus dem Audiosignal des linken Kanals (811, 911, 911') und dem Audiosignal des rechten Kanals (812, 912, 912') teilweise durch Verstärken von Basstönen relativ zu den Tönen mittlerer und hoher Frequenzen;Phasenkompensieren (955, 956) des Audiosignals des linken Kanals (811, 911, 911') und des Audiosignals des rechten Kanals (812, 912, 912') relativ zu dem spektral gewichteten Stereodifferenzsignal; undCross-Cancellation (947) des spektral gewichteten Stereodifferenzsignals mit dem phasenkompensierten Audiosignal des linken Kanals und dem phasenkompensierten Audiosignal des rechten Kanals vor der Ausgabe des gemischten Audiosignals des linken Kanals und des gemischten Audiosignals des rechten Kanals an die linke Treibereinheit (824, 824) beziehungsweise an die rechte Treibereinheit (825, 925).
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach Anspruch 1, wobei der Tonprozessor (810) zum Erzeugen (940) eines Differenzsignals konfiguriert ist, das eine Differenz zwischen dem Audiosignal des linken Kanals (811, 911, 911') und dem Audiosignal des rechten Kanals (812, 912, 912') darstellt, und zum Ausführen (942) einer spektralen Wichtung an dem Differenzsignal, um dadurch das spektral gewichtete Signal zu erzeugen.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach Anspruch 2, wobei der Tonprozessor (810) einen Subtraktor (940) zum Erzeugen des Differenzsignals umfasst.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach Anspruch 2 oder 3, wobei der Tonprozessor (810) ein Shelf-Filter (Kuhschwanzfilter) (942') zum Ausführen der spektralen Wichtung an dem Differenzsignal umfasst, wobei das Shelf-Filter (942') gekennzeichnet ist durch:einen Niederfrequenzbereich relativ konstanter Verstärkung, in dem Niederfrequenztöne relativ zu Mittel-und Hochfrequenztönen verstärkt werden;einen Mittelfrequenzbereich mit einer im Allgemeinen abnehmenden Verstärkung bei steigender Frequenz; undeinen Hochfrequenzbereich mit relativ konstanter Verstärkung, wobei die erste, zweite und dritte Filterregion im Allgemeinen benachbart sind.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach Anspruch 4, wobei das Shelf-Filter (942') des Weiteren gekennzeichnet ist durch ein Abfallen des Niederfrequenzbereichs auf den Mittelfrequenzbereich bei etwa 200 Hertz.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach Anspruch 5, wobei das Shelf-Filter (942') des Weiteren gekennzeichnet ist durch eine Grenze zwischen dem Mittelfrequenzbereich und dem Hochfrequenzbereich bei etwa 2 KHz.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach einem der Ansprüche 2, 3, 4, 5 oder 6, wobei das Shelf-Filter (942') ein lineares Filter ist.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach einem der vorangehenden Ansprüche, wobei der Tonprozessor (810) des Weiteren umfasst:einen Phasenentzerrer (945') zum Entzerren der Phase des spektral gewichteten Differenzsignals vor der Cross-Cancellation; undmehrere Phasenkompensatoren (955', 956') mit einer Phasencharakteristik, die zu dem Phasenentzerrer (945') und dem Spektral-Wichtungsfilter (942') über ein Frequenzband der Cross-Cancellation komplementär ist, die in Serie entlang dem Audiosignal des linken Kanals (811, 911, 911') beziehungsweise dem Audiosignal des rechten Kanals (812, 912, 912') angeordnet sind, vor der Cross-Cancellation.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach Anspruch 8, wobei der Phasenentzerrer (945') mehrere aller Passfilter umfasst, die gemeinsam eine erste Phasenübertragungsfunktion haben, und wobei jeder der Phasenkompensatoren (955', 956') mehrere aller Passfilter (1055, 1056) umfasst, die gemeinsam eine zweite Phasenübertragungsfunktion haben, die zu einer kombinierten Phasencharakteristik des Phasenentzerrers (945') und des Spektral-Wichtungsfilters (942') über ein Frequenzband der Cross-Cancellation komplementär ist.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach Anspruch 8, wobei der Phasenentzerrer (945') ein Filter zweiter Ordnung umfasst.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach einem der vorangehenden Ansprüche, wobei:das Audiosignal des linken Kanals (811, 911, 911') ein Surround-Audiosignal des linken Kanals umfasst, das an einen linken Surround-Lautsprecher gekoppelt ist;das Audiosignal des rechten Kanals (812, 912, 912') ein Surround-Audiosignal des rechten Kanals umfasst, das an einen rechten Surround-Lautsprecher gekoppelt ist; unddie linke Treibereinheit (824, 924) und die rechte Treibereinheit (825, 925) in einem Surround-Lautsprecher zur Verwendung in einem Raumschall-Stereosystem hinten links beziehungsweise in einem Surround-Lautsprecher hinten rechts verwendet werden.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach einem der vorangehenden Ansprüche, wobei der Tonprozessor (810) insgesamt oder teilweise in der digitalen Domäne implementiert ist.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach einem der vorangehenden Ansprüche, wobei die linke Treibereinheit (824, 924) und die rechte Treibereinheit (825, 925) relativ zueinander innerhalb einer Distanz positioniert sind, die mit einer Wellenlänge einer gewählten höchsten Betriebsfrequenz vergleichbar ist, die von der linken und rechten Treibereinheit (824, 825, 924, 925) in Gebrauch ausgestrahlt wird.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach einem der vorangehenden Ansprüche, wobei die linke Treibereinheit (824, 924) und die rechte Treibereinheit (825, 925) unmittelbar nebeneinander liegen.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach einem der vorangehenden Ansprüche, wobei die linke Treibereinheit (824, 924) und die rechte Treibereinheit (825, 925) in einem Fahrzeug montiert sind.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach Anspruch 15, wobei die linke Treibereinheit (824, 924) und die rechte Treibereinheit (825, 925) im Wesentlichen auf der Mittelachse des Fahrzeuges oder in deren Nähe positioniert sind.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach Anspruch 15 oder 16, wobei die linke Treibereinheit (824, 924) und die rechte Treibereinheit (825, 925) in einem gemeinsamen Gehäuse montiert sind.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach Anspruch 17, wobei:die rechte Treibereinheit (825, 925) und die linke Treibereinheit (824, 924) zu einer Reflexionsfläche des gemeinsamen Gehäuses hin ausgerichtet sind; unddas gemeinsame Gehäuse einen abgeschnittenen Schacht definiert, der in mindestens einem länglichen Schlitz mündet, der Ton projiziert, der von der linken Treibereinheit und der rechten Treibereinheit ausgeht, wodurch die Richtung des akustischen Ausgangs von der linken Treibereinheit (824, 924) und der rechten Treibereinheit (825, 925) geändert und die effektive Form, Abstrahlfläche und das Aspektverhältnis der linken und rechten Treibereinheit (824, 825, 924, 925) tranformiert werden.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach Anspruch 18, des Weiteren umfassend ein akustisches Absorptionsmaterial, das sich in dem gemeinsamen Gehäuse und gegenüber dem länglichen Schlitz befindet, wobei sich das akustische Absorptionsmaterial im Allgemeinen den äußeren hinteren Kantenkonturen der linken Treibereinheit (824, 924) und der rechten Treibereinheit (825, 925) anpasst, wodurch der akustische Ausgang von den Treibereinheiten (824, 825, 924, 925) zu dem länglichen Schlitz gelenkt wird.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach einem der Ansprüche 17, 18 oder 19, des Weiteren umfassend eine oder mehrere Hochfrequenz-Treibereinheiten, die in oder auf dem gemeinsamen Gehäuse montiert sind, wobei die Hochfrequenztreibereinheiten so ausgerichtet sind, dass ihr akustischer Ausgang direkt in das Innere des Fahrzeuges geht.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach einem der Ansprüche 15 bis 20, des Weiteren umfassend ein Paar an der Tür montierter linker und rechter Nieder- oder Mittelfrequenztreibereinheiten.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach Anspruch 11, wobei sich die linken und rechten hinteren Surround-Treibereinheiten (824, 825, 924, 925) in einem einzigen Lautsprechergehäuse befinden.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach Anspruch 11, des Weiteren umfassend einen vorderen linken Lautsprecher, einen vorderen rechten Lautsprecher und einen mittleren Lautsprecher, wobei der vordere linke Lautsprecher und der vordere rechte Lautsprecher zu dem rechten und linken äußeren Ende einer Hörfläche hin positioniert sind.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach Anspruch 11, des Weiteren umfassend einen ersten adaptiven Dekorrelationsschaltkreis, der zwischen dem Surround-Audiosignal des linken Kanals und dem linken Surround-Lautsprecher eingesetzt ist, und einen zweiten adaptiven Dekorrelationsschaltkreis, der zwischen dem Surround-Audiosignal des rechten Kanals und dem rechten Surround-Lautsprecher eingesetzt ist.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach Anspruch 8, wobei der Phasenentzerrer (945') mehrere aller Passfilter umfasst, und wobei jeder der Phasenkompensatoren (955', 956') mehrere aller Passfilter (1055, 1056) umfasst.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach Anspruch 11, wobei der linke Surround-Lautsprecher und der rechte Surround-Lautsprecher jeweils Dipol-Lautsprecher sind.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach Anspruch 18, wobei der abgeschnittene Schacht einen im Wesentlichen geraden und direkten Pfad für Ton, der aus der linken und rechten Treibereinheit (824, 825, 924, 925) ertönt, zu dem länglichen Schlitz bereitstellt.
- Tonsystem (800, 900) nach Anspruch 27, wobei der abgeschnittene Schacht senkrecht zu den Abstrahlflächen der linken und rechten Treibereinheit (824, 825, 924, 925) liegt.
- Verfahren zum adaptiven Wiedergeben von Ton in einer Weise, dass die wahrgenommene Fläche und Stabilität eines synthetischen Stereotonbildes vergrößert wird, wobei das Verfahren gekennzeichnet ist durch:Anordnen einer linken Treibereinheit (824, 924) neben einer rechten Treibereinheit (825, 925);Empfangen eines Audiosignals des linken Kanals (811, 911, 911') bei einem Tonprozessor (810);Empfangen eines Audiosignals des rechten Kanals (812, 912, 912') bei dem Tonprozessor (810);Erzeugen (940, 942) eines spektral gewichteten Stereodifferenzsignals aus dem Audiosignal des linken Kanals (811, 911, 911') und dem Audiosignal des rechten Kanals (812, 912, 912') teilweise durch Verstärken von Basstönen relativ zu den Tönen mittlerer und hoher Frequenzen;Phasenkompensieren (955, 956) des Audiosignals des linken Kanals (811, 911, 911') und des Audiosignals des rechten Kanals (812, 912, 912') relativ zu dem spektral gewichteten Stereodifferenzsignal; undCross-Cancellation (947) des spektral gewichteten Stereodifferenzsignals mit dem Audiosignal des linken Kanals und dem Audiosignal des rechten Kanals vor dem Anlegen des gemischten Audiosignals des linken Kanals und des gemischten Audiosignals des rechten Kanals an die linke Treibereinheit (824, 924) beziehungsweise an die rechte Treibereinheit (825, 925).
- Verfahren nach Anspruch 29, wobei das spektral gewichtete Differenzsignal durch Erhalten (940) eines Differenzsignals, das eine Differenz zwischen dem Audiosignal des linken Kanals (811, 911, 911') und dem Audiosignal des rechten Kanals (812, 912, 912') darstellt, und Anlegen des Differenzsignals an ein Shelf-Filter (942') umfasst, wobei das Shelf-Filter (942') durch einen Niederfrequenzbereich relativ konstanter Verstärkung, in dem Niederfrequenztöne relativ zu Mittel- und Hochfrequenztönen verstärkt werden, einen Mittelfrequenzbereich mit einer im Allgemeinen abnehmenden Verstärkung bei steigender Frequenz, und einen Hochfrequenzbereich mit relativ konstanter Verstärkung gekennzeichnet ist, wobei die erste, zweite und dritte Filterregion im Allgemeinen benachbart sind.
