Abstract
This invention relates to a ready-to-install length of
carpet (1) which is characterized that it is provided on
its back side, along each of the longitudinal edges, with
a strip of hot-melt glue (3).
Description
- This invention relates to a ready-to-install length of carpet, which, for example, can be wound up to a roll.
- Often, lengths of carpets have to be installed in aisles. This is, for example, the case in fair buildings, malls or other halls. Lengths of carpet are installed in the aisles between the stands.
- So, during installation, they are only glued with their longitudinal edges onto the floor.
- This also allows to remove the lengths of carpet after a certain period of time in an easy manner, which mostly must be the case in fair buildings, where, when the fair is finished, the stands are dismounted and the lengths of carpet must be removed.
- Known lengths of carpet are marketed without glue, and the glueing of the longitudinal edges is performed on site by means of double-sided tape.
- It is clear that therefore, the glueing is rather time-consuming.
- The invention aims at a ready-to-install length of carpet which can be glued-on very fast.
- According to the invention, this aim is realized in that the ready-to-install length of carpet, at its back side, is provided along each of the longitudinal edges with hot-melt glue (so-called "hotmelt").
- Hot-melt glue is a known type of glue which, after melting, can be used for glueing.
- In order to glue the length of carpet to the floor, it suffices to heat the glue and to put the length of carpet with the molten glue onto the floor.
- The length of carpet can be woven as well as tufted, however, preferably the backing consists of textile matter and not of synthetic rubber or latex and is fire-safe.
- With the intention of better showing the characteristics of the invention, hereafter, as an example without any limitative character, a preferred form of embodiment of a ready-to-install length of carpet according to the invention is described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
- Figure 1 represents a back view of a piece of carpet according to the invention;
- figure 2, schematically and at a larger scale, represents a cross-section according to line II-II in figure 1.
-
- In figure 1, the back side of a part of the length of
carpet 1 according to the invention is represented, consisting of aflat carpet 2 and of two strips of a hot-melt glue 3 which are provided on the back side, along the longitudinal edges. - A flat carpet is a carpet without synthetic foam on the back side, which thus, as schematically represented in figure 2, has a
textile backing 3. - The
carpet 2 is of the type B1 fire-retarding. - The strips of hot-
melt glue 3, for example, have a width of 0.5 to 2 cm and preferably a width of approximately 1 cm. - Hot-melt glue is glue which, at room temperature, is in solid condition, however, which melts when heated, for example, up to approximately 170°C. Thus, the strips of hot-
melt glue 3 of the ready-to-install length ofcarpet 1 are solid and only are molten when the length ofcarpet 1 is installed. - The used hot-
melt glue 3 allows to glue the length ofcarpet 1 to a surface in a sufficiently durable manner, however, also allows to pull said length of carpet loose from this surface in a relatively easy manner. - A suitable hot-
melt glue 3 is a glue, brought onto the market by the Dutch company PARAPLAST under the denomination of PLASTOMELT type 8772 with a processing temperature of 165-175°C, an open time of 6-11 sec., a binding time of 1-2 sec., an R & B value (according to the Ring and Ball measuring method) of 87-98°C, and a viscosity at 160°C of 1670-2270 mPa.sec., or under the denomination of PLASTOMELT type 8295 with a processing temperature of 150-165°C, an open time of 8-15 sec., a binding time of 2-4 sec., an R & B value of 78-86°C, and a viscosity at 160°C of 2000-3000 mPa.sec. - The strips of hot-
melt glue 3 are applied on the backing of the length of carpet; and in cold condition, this thermoplastic hot-melt glue 3 is non-adhesive, such that the length ofcarpet 1 can be wound up to a roll without any problem. - During installation, the length of
carpet 1 is unwound and, before bringing it into contact with the surface onto which it has to be glued, the strips of hot-melt glue 3 are molten by heating them. - Before the hot-
melt glue 3 becomes rigid again, the length ofcarpet 1 is brought against the surface and preferably is pressed on. - The length of
carpet 1 described here can be installed and glued very fast. The persons installing the carpet do not have to apply any glue. - This length of
carpet 1 allows a considerably faster working than with lengths ofcarpet 1 which, during installation, still have to be provided with glue, for example, by applying double-sided tape or by applying contact glue. - The invention is in no way limited to the form of embodiment described in the aforegoing and represented in the accompanying drawings, however, such ready-to-install length of carpet can be realized in different variants, without leaving the scope of the invention.
