If the printers 10 are being used for unchanging pages, for example, for offset press replacement, then 16 megabytes per memory module is sufficient. If the amount of variability on each page is limited to text, or a small range of variable images, then 16 megabytes is also adequate. However, for applications where successive pages are entirely different, up to 1 gigabyte may need to be installed on each board 108, 110 to give a total of 4 gigabytes for the print engine 56. This allows around 2,000 completely different pages to be stored digitally in the print engine 56. The local buffering of the data also facilitates high speed printing by the printers 10.

A leading edge of the paper 48 is fed between the belts 152, is grabbed by the belts 152 and is fed through the printer 10 to exit through the exit roller assembly 86. Once the paper 48 has been loaded, the direction of the motor 166 is reversed so that the traverser blocks move in directions opposite to that of arrows 174 causing the belts 152 to move to the position shown in Figure 16 of the drawings. Thus, during printing, the belts 152 are spaced from, and do not bear against, surfaces of the paper 48.

Claims (5)
- Druckmedium-Beschickungsmechanismus (150) für einen Drucker (10), wobei der Beschickungsmechanismus derart konfiguriert ist, dass er das Druckmedium in einer Vorschubrichtung zuführt und Folgendes einschließt:Zuführungsmittel, umfassend ein Paar von endlosen Bändern (152), von denen jedes eine Oberfläche definiert, wobei die Oberflächen zueinander in einer parallelen Beziehung stehen und in Vorschubrichtung bewegbar sind, wobei die Zuführungsmittel geeignet sind, eine Vorderkante des Druckmediums zu erfassen, um es in Richtung eines Ausgangsbereichs des Druckers zuzuführen, um die Beschickung des Druckers mit dem Druckmedium zu bewerkstelligen; undVerschiebungsmittel zum Verschieben der Oberflächen im Verhältnis zueinander, in einer Richtung quer zur Vorschubrichtung bis zum Anschlag miteinander, wenn eine Beschickung mit dem Druckmedium erforderlich ist, und zum Verschieben der Oberflächen aus dem Anschlag miteinander, wenn die Beschickung mit dem Druckmedium beendet ist,dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass:die Bänder (152) kleine Öffnungen aufweisen, um zu ermöglichen, dass Trocknungsfluid durch die Bänder hindurch über Oberflächen des Druckmediums während eines Druckvorgangs zirkuliert.
- Beschickungsmechanismus nach Anspruch 1, bei dem jedes Band (152) über ein Paar von beabstandeten Walzen (154) läuft, wobei die Walzen des einen Bandes mit den Walzen des anderen Bandes derart in Ausrichtung sind, dass die Drehachsen der ausgerichteten Walzen sich parallel zueinander erstrecken und in Richtung quer zur Vorschubrichtung voneinander beabstandet sind.
- Beschickungsmechanismus nach Anspruch 2, bei dem das Verschiebungsmittel auf die ausgerichteten Walzen (154) der Bänder (152) einwirkt, um die ausgerichteten Walzen aufeinander zuzutreiben, wenn Druckmedium zu laden ist, und die ausgerichteten Walzen voneinander wegzubewegen, wenn die Beschickung beendet ist .
- Beschickungsmechanismus nach Anspruch 3, bei dem das Verschiebungsmittel ein längliches Antriebselement (164) und ein Paar von angetriebenen Elementen (162) einschließt, wobei jedes angetriebene Element unmittelbar neben einem jeweiligen Ende des Antriebselementes angeordnet ist, wobei das Antriebselement in der Lage ist, die angetriebenen Elemente zu verschieben, um die Verschiebung der angeordneten Walzen (154) in der Richtung quer zur Vorschubrichtung zu bewirken, wobei die angetriebenen Elemente durch einen Verbinder mit ihren zugehörigen, ausgerichteten Walzen verbunden sind.
- Beschickungsmechanismus nach Anspruch 4, bei dem das Antriebselement (164) eine Madenschraube ist, jedes angetriebene Element (162) ein Traversenblock ist, der derart montiert ist, dass er entlang der Madenschraube bei Drehung der Madenschraube verschiebbar ist, und jeder Verbinder ein Scherenverbinder ist, der jeden Traversenblock mit seinen zugehörigen, ausgerichteten Walzen verbindet.
