Abstract
A fastener component with fastening elements protruding from a basis
thereof with a flame retardant agent provided on the surface of and/or
inside said fastener elements.
Description
- The invention refers to a fastener component with fastening elements protruding from a basis thereof.
- An example for such a fastener component is a component of a hook and loop fastener, such a hook and loop fastener comprising 2 components, namely a first component including hooks and a second component including loops. If said two components are brought together, at least some of the hooks come into engagement with loops of the other component, so that said 2 components are fixed to one another. Thus, said fastening elements protruding from a basis of said fastener component may be hooks or loops for example. Moreover, said fastening elements can be adapted to have both, hooking and looping characteristics, being thus of hermaphrodite character, like mushrooms for example.
- Another example is a component of a zipper, the coupling elements thereof serving as fastener elements.
- A fastener component according to the invention is not limited to fastening systems having 2 components. Rather, the invention refers to such a fastener component on its own, independently of another fastener component.
- If fastener components are used in the field of aircraft construction, they have to meet several specifications with view to the prevention of fire hazard. One of these specifications is EADS-specification FAR 25.853 (b), relating to the flammability. Said specification refers to a vertical burning test with 12 seconds ignition time, after ignition and removal of the flame, the afterburning time should not exceed 15 seconds. The original one of said specification refers to a testing of the fastener components on their own. A new version thereof, however, is related to the fastener component not on its own, but sewn to glass fiber or glued on an aluminium film.
- In an attempt to meet respective requirements, fastener components were made of NOMEX material. These NOMEX-components, however, turned out to meet the respective requirements at least not in any case.
- The same applies to another attempt that was made. Namely, a flame retardant was incorporated into a backcoating of the fastener component or a separate flame retardant film was deposited on the backside of the component.
- In view of the above, it is an object of the present invention to provide for a fastener component with fastening elements protruding from a basis thereof, said fastener component being enhanced with view to its flame retardant characteristics.
- According to the invention, the above object is achieved by a fastener component with fastening elements protruding from a basis thereof, characterized by a flame retardant agent on the surface of and/or inside said fastener elements.
- The invention includes embodiments having fastener elements completely covered by and/or saturated with said agent, and furthermore embodiments with only some fastener elements comprising said agent as well as embodiments with elements only partly covered by said agent and/or not completely saturated therewith.
- It was found that applying a flame retardant agent to fastening elements results in a considerable enhancement of the flame retardant characteristics of the whole fastener component, compared with the NOMEX-solution and with the solution including a flame retardant in the backcoating or providing a separate flame retardant film.
- The flame retardant agent may be of any type. Preferably it is a halogen-free flame retardant agent, because of a significantly reduced toxicity as compared to halogen products.
- What is furthermore preferred is a phosphorus compound, expanded graphite, an antimony compound, an aluminum derivate, a nitrogen compound and/or an aluminum hydrate with view to the flame retardant agent. To this end, it is most preferable that the flame retardant agent includes phosphorus ester.
- Particularly in case that the fastener component including the fastening elements comprises polyamide, it is preferred that the flame retardant agent includes a binder, to enhance the connection with the fastener element material.
- Furthermore, a thickener may be used included by the flame retardant agent.
- The concentration of the flame retardant agent depends on the circumstances of use. Preferably, however, the fastener component should comprise the flame retardant agent in a ratio of at least 4 wt%.
- Particularly, what is preferred is that the fastener component according to the invention is flame retardant as determined by above mentioned specification FAR 25.853 (b), on its own and fixed to a substrate.
- Finally, the fastener component is preferably a part of a hook and loop fastener system.
- According to a second aspect of the invention, what is provided is a method of producing a flame retardant fastener component with fastener elements protruding from a basis thereof.
- Namely, in order to enhance flame retardant characteristics thereof, instead of using NOMEX, incorporating a flame retardant agent into the backcoating or providing a separate film, the method according to the invention includes the step of providing on the surface of and/or inside the fastener elements a flame retardant agent.
- As compared to the above mentioned conventional methods, the method according to the invention is both work and cost saving and results in a better product.
- According to a preferred embodiment, the method includes the step of immersing the fastener elements in a bath containing said flame retardant agent, so that the agent is fucked into the fastener elements. This is a very simple way of applying the agent to the fastener elements.
- With view to the specification of the flame retardant agent, with the method the same applies as does with the product mentioned above.
- According to a third aspect of the invention, what is provided is the use of a flame retardant agent on the surface of and/or inside fastener elements protruding from a basis of a fastener component. Namely, conventionally, what was used for coating fastener elements is only dye or the like, but not a flame retardant agent. Moreover, flame retardant agents were conventionally only used for being incorporated into the backcoating of a fastener component or in connection with a separate film deposited on the backside thereof.
- However, by applying a flame retardant agent to fastener elements protruding from a basis of a fastener component, a fastener component being enhanced as compared to the prior art may be achieved.
- Once more, with view to the specification of the flame retardant agent, with the use the same applies as does with the fastener component.
