Description
- The present invention relates to gas burners, in particular applied to heating units in gas cooking appliances such as ranges and cooktops, comprising a body and a flame spreader unit mounted thereon, the body comprising supports for a pan or the like placed around the flame spreader unit.
- A gas burner of the above type is disclosed in EP-A-123007 where the burner body is disk-shaped and has a central hole surrounded by a circular rise which defines the seat of a traditional flame spreader unit. Around the circular rise the disk presents four radial supports which define the grid integral with the burner.
- Direct open flame atmospheric burners for cooking hobs application, as the one disclosed in EP-A-123007, are generally disposed with a central flame spreader unit or burner head protruding over the hob surface, having a plurality of primary burner ports formed as slots or holes at port locations and distributed about the periphery of the flame spreader unit forming one or more concentric crowns of radial partially premixed Bunsen-type flamelets.
- The object of the present invention is to overcome the above-mentioned configuration by providing a gas burner with an improved flow pattern. According to the invention, such object is obtained thanks to the feature reported in the appended claims.
- According to the claimed features, the overall thickness of the gas burner can be greatly reduced since the flame spreader unit does not add any "height" to the overall height of the burner.
- Preferably the supports for a pan or the like are projections raised from the body at a predetermined distance from the flame spreader unit.
- The use of a peculiar flame spreader unit does allow a highly aerated combustion that leads to short light blue flames. Low noise and low pollutant emission are typical of highly aerated flames as the ones obtained with a burner according to the invention.
The resulting short flame further reduces the distance from the pans, thus removing the grids and replacing them with pan supports integrated onto the burner body.
The burner design, as a single or multiple slots flame port, can be realized in a single component or provided with a separated supplementary flame spreader unit. - The low height of the burner favors the integration of the grid in the material of the burner body, improving the cleaning, handling and aesthetics of the whole top: one-wipe ease of cleaning is one of the most attractive features from the customer point of view. The reduced height of the pan over the top increases also pan stability and handling.
The present invention will be described further, by way of examples, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: - figure 1 is a perspective view of a burner according to the invention,
- figure 2 is an exploded view of the burner of figure 1,
- figure 3 is a section view of the burner of figure 1 as it is installed in a gas cooking hob, and
- figure 4 is a prospective view of a second embodiment of a burner according to the invention.
- The gas burner comprises a flame spreader unit or
burner cap 1, a burner body or base 2 and aconnection flange 3. The burner body 2 presents an integrated pan support in form of threeprojections 4 with a flat upper surface 4a. The upper surface 1 a of theflame spreader unit 1 is flush with the upper surface of the burner body 2. This means that there is no step or ridge between the upper surface of the body 2 and the upper surface 1a of theflame spreader unit 1. - The realization of the assembly burner body and flame spreader unit in two pieces is described and shown only as an example, since such assembly may be realized in one piece. In the configuration in which the
flame spreader unit 1 is removable from the burner body 2, there is no need to place it in a predetermined angular position relative to the burner body. - The burner body 2 is disk-shaped and comprises a central circular seat for the
flame spreader unit 1. - The
flame spreader unit 1 and the burner body 2 in their functional relative position form anexpansion chamber 5 in which the mixture formed in the venturi system V (figure 3) by natural air entrainment of the gas jet energy flows. - In the preferred embodiment shown in figures 1-3, the
flame spreader unit 1 includes a plurality of slots 6 to form a radial flame pattern; the slots extend radially in a ring zone of the upper surface of theflame spreader unit 1, and communicate with theexpansion chamber 5 of the burner body 2. The gas-air mixture outlet is located at the downflow edge of the slots 6 on the flame spreader unit and the resulting flame, when the burner is fed with a gas-air mixture, forms a pattern of flamelets radially distributed over theflame spreader unit 1 and anchored to the burner slots. - The
supports 4, integrated into the burner body 2 or mounted on it, are placed at a determined distance from the slots 6, and the upper surfaces 4a of the supports define a plane that corresponds to the bottom of the pan or the like (not shown). The distance of this plane from the slots 6 is calculated in order to perform a good combustion and to give high efficiency performance. - The burner body 2 has, in its lower side, a
tubular shaft 7 that slides into aconnection hub 8 of theconnection flange 3. Theflange hub 8 connects the venturi system V to the burner body 2. The connection, e.g. using o-rings or bayonets, assures sealing of the burner assembly while the gas mixture is flowing. - Furthermore, the burner body 2 has, on its lower side, protruding
pins 9 to allow burner orientation and placement into relative embossed areas in the cooktop surface C. Another configuration may have protruding pins in the cooktop surface and embossed areas in the burner body. - The burner body 2 in its functional position is centered into the
connection flange 3 and the protrudingpins 9 set the distance of the edge 2a of the burner body 2 from the cooktop surface C, thus determining the gap for primary air suction. The cooktop surface C has around hole 20 coaxial with theburner connection flange 3 and can be fixed to said flange with any kind of fasteners. The cooktop C, around theholes 20, presents dome-shaped zones D which are substantially radiused to the dome shape of the burned body 2. This reduces the risk of any spill of liquid inside the box in which the venturi system V is housed, and at the same time increases the cleanability of the cooktop due to smoothed boundaries and to the continuity of the design of the top surface.
Theflange 3 hasair intakes 10 to let air inflow from the outer surface C of the cooktop, through the gap between the burner body 2 and the cooktop and then into the box that contains the venturi system V. - According to a second embodiment of the invention, the slots defining the flame ports are a ring-
shaped slot 60 that is circularly distributed about the flame spreader unit 1 (fig. 4). The resulting flame forms a single ring, or a ring that may be interrupted in two or more points along its circumference by support pins 24 (as shown in figure 4). - The venturi system V, in which the mixture gas-air flows, can be oriented either horizontally (as shown in figure 3) or vertically or at any angle to the top surface of the hob. Moreover the shape and number of slots 6 can be different from those shown in the attached drawing, but in any case they will assure a substantial axial flow quite different from the radial flow of the conventional gas burners.
- According to another embodiment of the present invention, in order to provide always a correct gas and air mixture for combustion, the burner comprises means (not shown) for changing the dimension of the slots 6 by actuators on the
flame spreader unit 1 and/or the burner body 2. - According to a further feature of the burner according to the invention, the burner comprises a device for flame ignition and flame detection that is integrated in the burner design to avoid protruding parts.
