Abstract

Claims (9)

  1. Fall-arresting device intended to afford the safety of a person who has to move around at a height, or, in general, to prevent any load that has to be moved around at a height from falling, comprising :
    - a body (25) which has a part, hereinafter known as a "runner", which can be engaged over and moved along a flexible or rigid retaining support such as a cable (2), a rope or a rail, the body (25) having an opening (35) intended to accommodate a member (21) that allows the user or the load to be harnessed to the device (20),
    - two jamming cams (41) mounted so that they can pivot on the body (25) and able, in a retracted position, to allow the retaining support (2) to run between them and the runner (32) and, in an active position, to clamp the retaining support (2) between them and the runner (32) so as to prevent the device (20) from moving along the retaining support (2), the two cams (41) being placed some distance apart; and
    - a system (42) for actuating at least one of the cams (41) in the event of the user or of the load falling, bringing this or these cams (41) into the active position, the actuating system comprising at least one finger (42) secured to a cam (41), each finger (42) projecting on the opposite side to the runner (32) and having a length such that it lies in the path followed by said connector (21) in said opening (35) in the event of the user or of the load falling, so that the connector (21) acts on this finger (42) in the event of such a fall so as to bring the cam (41) connected to this finger (42) into the active position;
    the device being characterized in that:
    - the runner (32) forms a curved part which can be engaged over and moved along the retaining support (2);
    - the opening (35) formed in the body is elongate, its length being directed parallel to the retaining support (2) when the device (20) is engaged over this retaining support (2), the member (21), particularly a connector of the safety shackle type, being able to be engaged in the opening (35) in the space formed between the fingers (42) and being able to move in said opening (35) or to be removed from between the fingers (42).
  2. Device (20) according to Claim 1, characterized in that at least one cam (41) is associated with spring means which normally keep it in a position of lightly clamping the retaining support (2), to sufficient an extent to prevent the device (20) from moving freely along this retaining support (2), and in that the device (20) is equipped with a member (27, 60) for actuating this cam (41); this actuating member (27, 60) has a part against which said connector (21) can bear and a part connected to the aforementioned finger (42) of the cam (41), and is shaped so that when tension is exerted on the connector (21) in a direction substantially perpendicular to the retaining support (2), it moves this finger (42) from the aforementioned position of light clamping to the position of retraction of the cam (41) and so that, if the user falls, it does not impede the connector (21) coming to bear against this finger (42).
  3. Device (20) according to Claim 2, characterized in that each cam (41) comprises a finger (42) for actuating it and in that it comprises two link rods (27) mounted to pivot on said body (25), namely (i) a first link rod (27) of which one part, situated on one side of the axis of pivoting of the link rod (27), extends at the level of the central region of said opening (35) and of which the other part, situated on the other side of this axis of pivoting, comes into engagement with one of said fingers (42), and (ii) a second link rod (27) of which one part, situated on one side of the axis of pivoting of the link rod (27), extends at the level of the central region of said opening (35) and of which the other part, situated on the other side of this axis of pivoting, comes into engagement with the other of said fingers (42).
  4. Device (20) according to Claim 2, characterized in that each cam (41) comprises a finger for actuating it and in that it comprises a flexible link (60) connecting these two fingers (42) together, the length of the link (60) being such that the connector (21), when said tension is exerted on it, bears against the central region of this link (60) so as to move the fingers (42) into their position corresponding to the position of retraction of the cams (41).
  5. Device (20) according to one of Claims 1 to 4, characterized in that the edge of the body (25) of the device (20) delimiting the lower part of said opening (35) has a region (37) of concave shape in which the connector (21) is engaged when said tension essentially perpendicular to the retaining support is exerted on it.
  6. Device (20) according to Claim 5, characterized in that said concave region (37) is bordered by two convex regions (38) which contribute to limiting the unwanted movement of the shackle (21) in said opening (35).
  7. Device (20) according to one of Claims 1 to 6, characterized in that the runner (32) and each cam (41) are shaped in such a way as to allow, when this cam (41) is in a determined angular position, the retaining support (2) to be engaged laterally between this runner (32) and this cam (41).
  8. Device (20) according to Claim 7, characterized in that each cam (41) and the finger (42) connected to it are shaped in such a way that this finger (42) is positioned near the finger (42) of the other cam (41) in said determined angular position, and in such a way that this same determined angular position can be reached only if the connector (21) has been removed from said opening (35).
  9. Device (20) according to one of Claims 1 to 8, characterized in that it comprises at least one removable stop (56) associated with a cam (41) or two removable stops (56) each of which is associated with one of the cams (41), this stop (56), when active, preventing the cam (41) from entering a determined angular position that allows the retaining support (2) to be engaged laterally between this runner (32) and this cam (41) and, in its retracted position, not impeding the arrival of the cam (41) in this determined angular position.
