A water supply (24) flows into said channel.

Description

Technisches GebietTechnical area

The invention relates to a device for coating a moving web of material, in which the coating material is applied to the web in a free-falling curtain and with separating elements for separating the edges of the curtain to the desired coating width, wherein on each side of the curtain at least one separating element is present and that on the outer side of the separating element, which determines the coating width of the material web, a channel is provided, from which the collected coating material is discharged in or against the web running direction.

Stand der TechnikState of the art

For coating of moving webs such as paper or board webs, plastic or metal foils so-called curtain coater are known in which the coating material (pigment coating, plastic dispersions, etc.) is applied from a slot in a free-falling curtain on the web. In order to produce a stable curtain which is uniform over the coating width, it is known from US Pat WO 98/47630 and the DE 19735588-A It is known to guide the two curtain edges in each case with a guide element extending from the slot nozzle down to the vicinity of the material web. To set the desired coating width, the curtain edges are separated before the impact of the curtain on the material web by means of separating elements, which are arranged transversely to the web running direction adjustable below the guide elements. The two separating elements each have an upwardly projecting separating edge and an outwardly inclined upper collecting surface on which the material separated from the separating edge of the curtain edge is discharged to the outside.

In order to have the possibility to change the width of a coating curtain in width, in the JP-A-61035880 describes a method in which the width of the curtain is limited by means of two laterally arranged next to the coating curtain collecting container. In order to be able to adjust the coating width individually and steplessly, the collecting containers are received via guides perpendicular to the curtain or laterally displaceable.

When the curtain coater is used for applying dispersion adhesives to a sheet-like separator in the production of self-adhesive labels, adhesive film strips, etc., or for applying a barrier layer in the production of a moistureproof packaging material, it is necessary to be able to adjust the coating width differently over a wide range because the web width of the material webs to be coated varies considerably.

Darstellung der ErfindungPresentation of the invention

The invention is therefore based on the object to improve a method and an apparatus of the generic type so that very different coating widths can be adjusted without affecting the coating quality.

This object is achieved in that an inner surface of the separating element, which determines the coating width of the material web, is rinsed with an auxiliary liquid.

The arrangement of two separators on each side makes it possible to cut large lateral areas of the curtain to set a very small coating width, without coating defects occur at the longitudinal edges. In order to avoid coating errors (fluctuations in the coating weight or the coating width, curtain breakage, etc.) inner separating elements can be used whose separating edge has only a small height. The main part of the stream of coating material to be separated is separated from the first outer separating elements, whose separating edges extend sufficiently high to avoid overflowing of the separated coating material. By means of the inner separating elements only the remainder of the curtain edge is separated. You can do it have a low height, without that separated coating material undesirably drains inwards over the separating edge. A small height of the separating edge of the inner elements is advantageous, since their running parallel to the flow direction of the curtain inner surface also serves as a guide element for the curtain edge. Too high a height will cause the curtain edge to detach too far above the web to be coated from the inside surface. Then its position fluctuates and a bead forms on the coating material which is applied to the web.

Wege zur Ausführung der ErfindungWays to carry out the invention

The coating apparatus shown in the figures serves to apply a dispersion adhesive (for example an acrylate) in aqueous solution to a siliconized paper web 1. Because of its advantageous properties, the device can also be used for applying other dispersions to paper, plastic films or thin strips or to Coat paper or board webs with coating color.

It contains a slot nozzle 2, which is suspended above the path of the web 1 in the frame of the applicator. The slot nozzle 2 is connected to a supply for coating material, not shown, and has on its underside a slot-shaped opening from which emerges the coating material and a forms a free-falling curtain 3, which falls on the web surface. The width of the slot of the nozzle 2 is greater than the maximum width of the web. 1

Below the slot nozzle 2, the web 1 is supported over its entire width by a support roller 4. The support roller 4 is fed to the uncoated web 1 from below. After coating, the web 1 leaves the support roller 4 approximately in the horizontal direction.

The slot nozzle 2 is suspended vertically adjustable above the apex line of the support roller 4 in order to adjust the distance of the Auslaßschlitzes of the web 1 and thus the drop height of the coating material can. In addition, the slit nozzle 2 is mounted horizontally in and against the web running direction, so that it can be moved against the web running direction from the region above the apex line of the support roller 4 to a region in front of the support roller 4. The slot nozzle 2 is then above a drip pan 5, which is located immediately in front of the support roller 4 above the web 1. In this position, a stable curtain 3 is initially generated when starting the coating device, which falls into the drip pan 5. Subsequently, the slot nozzle 2 is moved with its attached elements in the web running direction - in Fig. 1 to the right - in its working position above the support roller 4. The area between the outlet-side end of the collecting trough 5 and the apex region of the counter-roller 4 is covered by a guide plate 6 extending over the working width. At the end of the guide plate 6, a scraper 7 is arranged, which reduces the adhering to the web 1 air boundary layer before the impact of the curtain 3.

Since the free-falling curtain 3 tends to constrict at its edges due to the surface tension, strip-shaped guide elements 8 extending down to the vicinity of the web 1 are attached to both sides of the slot nozzle 2. Preferably, the two guide elements 8 are each attached directly adjacent to the outlet slit of the slit nozzle 2, and their curtain 3 facing the inside is formed flat. Like in the DE 19735558-A described, the inside of each guide member 8 can be flushed with a surface tension reducing auxiliary liquid, for example with water. The auxiliary liquid flowing downwards from the top to the bottom on the guide elements 8 causes the curtain 3 adheres better to the guide elements 8. Alternatively, the guide elements 8 can be designed inclined inwards.

On both longitudinal sides of the coating device, means for limiting the curtain 3 to the desired coating width are arranged below the guide elements 8. The limiting means are respectively fixed to the frame of the nozzle 2, so that they are moved in a displacement of the nozzle 2 in or against the web running direction. In addition, they are mounted displaceably transversely to the web running direction in order to adjust the width of falling on the web 1 curtain 3 to greatly different web widths can. The edge limiting means of both sides are mirror images of each other and arranged. They can be adjusted transversely apart.

The edge limiting means each consist of two blade-shaped, substantially perpendicular and with a certain distance from each other arranged separating elements 9, 10, which are fixed to the longitudinal sides of a bottom plate 11. Both separating elements 9, 10 run in a sharp separation edge, wherein the height of the separating edge of the inner separating element 9 is chosen so small that the curtain 3 does not detach from the inner surface 12 before it impinges on the web 1. The inner separating element 9 forms, together with the outer separating element 10 and the bottom plate 11, a marginal channel 13 which discharges the coating material collected between the two separating elements 9, 10. As can be seen from FIG. 3, the separating elements 9, 10 are extended against the web running direction to form the groove 13 so far that their end extends into the region of the guide plate 6. The bottom plate 11 is inclined downwards so that the collected coating material runs in the direction of the sump 5.

On the outside of the outer separator 10, a transverse channel 14 is attached to catch the outer edge of the curtain. The measured transversely to the web running direction length of each transverse groove 14 is selected so that when setting a minimum coating width their outer end to below the associated guide element 8, that extends beyond the lateral end of the outlet slot of the nozzle 2. Each transverse channel 14 has side walls 15, which extend in height up to the separating edge of the associated separating element 10. The partition 10 forms the inner boundary wall of the channel 14. Its height is sufficiently large, so that the separated Volumetric flow of coating material can be collected and removed with minimal coating width, without overflowing coating material. Preferably, the transverse grooves 14 each extend inwardly inclined, and at its inner end in the region of the separating element 10 in each case a drainage channel 16 is attached. Via the gutter 16, which also extends against the web running direction into the area above the baffle 6, the collected coating material is discharged into the drip pan 5. An inwardly inclined transverse channel 14 with a next to the separator 10 arranged gutter 16 has two advantages: Firstly, the drip tray 5 only needs to extend over the axial length of the support roller 4, since even at maximum coating width, the gutter 16 is still in the area Counter roll is located. On the other hand, the outer end of the transverse channel 14 does not collide with the support roller 4, when the separating blades 9, 10 are moved with the transverse groove 14 for setting a minimum coating width very far inward, as shown in phantom in Fig. 4.

In operation, the two separating elements 9, 10 adjusted with the attached transverse groove 14 so far inwardly adjusted that the inner separating knife 9 is arranged in the region of the desired coating edge. The outer separator 10 of greater height separates the outer part of the curtain edge, which is collected by the transverse channel 14 and passed through the gutter 16 into the drip pan 5. The result is a narrow, inner curtain 3, the edges of which are then separated from the inner separating elements 9 and derived via the edge troughs 13. The inner surface 12 of each partition member 9 serves as a guide for the edge of the curtain part, which is applied to the web 1. The small height of the separating element 9 ensures that the curtain edges do not become detached from the web 1 before impact.

In order to avoid beading at the longitudinal edges of the coating on the web 1, a suction line 17 is arranged on the underside of each edge channel 13, which opens via a suction channel 18 in the bottom plate 11 in a suction slot 19 in the inner side 12 of the inner separating element 9. The suction slot 19 extends at a distance of 0.1 mm - 1 mm from the web 1 at the bottom of the separating element 9 in the curtain 3. In the web running direction, it has a length of 2 mm - 15 mm, preferably 3 mm - 5mm so that the Absaugugsfunktion guaranteed with appropriate variations of the curtain 3. The suction line 17 extends outwardly below the transverse channel 14 and is connected to a pump with a separator for the coating material. To prevent caking in the suction slot 19, this is rinsed with water. Parallel to the suction line 17 lead for this purpose, two water pipes 20 below the bottom plate 11 to the suction slot 19, which open at a short distance in front of this in the suction channel 18. The rinsing water is led away together with the extracted coating material via the suction line 17.

The length of the suction channel 18 in the bottom plate 11 is determined by the distance between the two separating elements 9, 10 from each other. It should be kept as low as possible, so that no excessive pressure losses occur and caking in the suction channel 18 can be avoided. A short suction channel 18 is made possible by a narrow-shaped edge channel 13, which only has to dissipate a small stream of separated coating material.

In order to hold the curtain edges on the inner surfaces 12 of the separating elements 9, they are rinsed with an auxiliary liquid. Preferably, the auxiliary liquid is supplied so that it exits at the separating edge of the separating element 9 and flows down on both sides of the separating element 9. The exiting auxiliary liquid thus forms a liquid cushion immediately above the separating edge of the separating element 9, which prevents caking of coating material at the separating edge.

As can be seen from Fig. 7, the separating element 9 is constructed in two parts: on the bottom plate 11 a expiring in a sharp edge side wall 21 is fixed, in the upper part outside a vertical groove 22 is incorporated. Externally on the wall 21, a thin, blade-shaped cover plate 23 is attached, which covers the groove 22 and thus forms an open at the separating edge slot-shaped channel. A water supply 24 opens into the channel. The water supplied by means of the water supply 24 exits at the top in the region of the separating edge and runs down both on the inner surface 12 of the sheet 21 as auxiliary liquid stabilizing the curtain 3 and along the wall 21 into the edge channel 13 , The entire separating element 9 is thus lapped by water, so that even with coating materials prone to sticking the adhesion of material to the 9 is prevented.
