Abstract
Description
- This invention relates to a dispensing device for a dishwasher or a laundry washing machine and comprises a detergent storage compartment connected to a dispensing chamber in which a screw conveyor is rotatably arranged, the dispensing chamber being provided with an outlet opening connected to a treatment chamber for the dish or the laundry.
- It is previously known to use detergents in the form of powder, tablets, pastes and liquids for dishwashers and laundry washing machines. These detergents are usually placed in a box in the machine from which they at a suitable time during the washing process are automatically dispensed into the treatment chamber. When powder, which is the most common detergent, is used the operator normally measures up a quantity corresponding to the need for each part of the washing process and fills these quantities in separate boxes which are opened successively towards the treatment chamber during the washing process.
- Attempts have also been made to provide washing machines with a larger storage compartment for powder detergents and a dispensing device that conveys a suitable amount of the detergent from the storage compartment to the treatment chamber, see for instance EP 57217 and EP 611843 respectively. These type of devices have however not been working satisfactorily which means that they have not been used in practice. The function shortages are primarily related to the difficulties that exist to seal the compartment and the dispensing device from the treatment chamber which means that damp in the form of liquid and vapor might penetrate into the powder and clogs it such that it is not conveyed to the dispensing device or that it sticks to the surfaces of the dispensing device and consequently does not dispense in a proper manner.
- The purpose of this invention is to achieve a dispensing device for a powder detergent the dispensing device being shaped such that it, as far as possible, prevents damp from penetrating into it at the same time as a proper conveying and dispensing function should be achieved also if the powder becomes clogged for any reason. This is achieved by means of a device having the characteristics mentioned in the claims.
- An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings on which Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of a dishwasher for which the present invention is to be used, Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the dispensing device in a non active position when the door of the dish washer is closed, Fig. 3 shows an enlargement of a detail in Fig. 2 whereas Fig. 4 shows the same section as Fig. 2 but in a dispensing position.
- The dishwasher shown in Fig. 1 has a
casing 10 with adoor 11 normally covering an opening to atreatment chamber 12. The treatment chamber is in a conventional manner provided withbaskets 13 that can be pulled out and on which the dish is placed and wash arms, not shown, through which the water is sprayed towards the dish. - The
door 11, which is comparatively thick, comprises an outer and an inner layer and encloses astorage compartment 14 in which a larger quantity of detergent is filled through a fill opening 15 arranged at the upper edge part of the door. The lower part of thecompartment 14 is shaped as a hopper and encloses atoothed wheel 16 turnably arranged about ahorizontal shaft 17 and havingseveral openings 18. The lower portion of thecompartment 14 ends in acylindrical chamber 19 in which ascrew conveyor 20 is rotatably arranged. Thethreads 21 of the screw conveyor engage the teeth of thewheel 16 such that the wheel is turned when the screw is rotated. - One end of the
screw 20, which is placed close to anemptying shaft 22, supports a sealingwasher 23 of comparatively flexible material. The sealing washer is by means of ascrew joint 24 or in any other suitable way fixed to thescrew conveyor 20 between an inner and anouter clamping plate edge portion 27 of thecylindrical chamber 19. - The other end of the screw is a tube shaped part 28 with a groove for an
annual sealing 29 abutting the inner wall of thecylindrical chamber 19. The end of the tube shaped part 28 is covered by anend wall portion 30 fixed at the tube shaped part and having a central threaded opening in which a first threadedportion 31 of ashaft 32 is inserted. Theend wall portion 30 is provided a stop 33 and 34 resp. extending at each side of the end wall and cooperates withpins - The
shaft 32 also is provided with a second threadedportion 37 the threads being directed in the opposite direction with regard to the threads of thefirst portion 31. The threadedportion 37 extends through a central threaded opening of a cylindrical follower 38 arranged to rotate in agroove 39 established between the outer end of the cylindrical chamber and anend sleeve 40 surrounding the chamber. The follower 38 is also provided with agroove 41 at the side which is opposite theend wall portion 30. Thegroove 41 is a part of a circle and surrounds the major part of the periphery of the circle one end of the groove being an abutment surface for apin 42 arranged at asleeve 43 fixed to theshaft 32. Thesleeve 43 is driven by means of an electric motor, not shown, which is activated by means of the program controller of the dish washer. - The device operates in the following manner. When the detergent is to be dispensed from the
storage compartment 14 the program controller of the dish washer activates the electric motor, not shown, which rotates thesleeve 43 and hence theshaft 32. This means that theshaft 32 will be moved to the left in Fig. 2 with a large force since the follower 38 in this position operates as a fixed nut because of the existing friction forces between the follower and the part surrounding thegroove 39. At the same time the first threadedportion 31 rotates in theend wall portion 30 since the end wall portion in this position serves as a fixed nut because of existing friction forces between thescrew conveyor 20 and the surroundingchamber 19 which means an additional superposed movement of the screw conveyor to the left in Fig. 2. This means that the screw conveyor, without being initially rotated, will move to the left in Fig 2 such that theflexible sealing washer 23 is disengaged from theedge portion 27 of thechamber 19. During this motion thewasher 23 moves from a deformed stage to a flat stage. - When the
conveyor screw 20 has reached the position shown in Fig. 4 thepin 35 of theshaft 32 will abut the stop 33 which means that the conveyor screw starts to rotate. Thethreads 21 of the screw conveyor will then dispense powder from thestorage compartment 14 to the emptying shaft where it falls down freeely into the treatment chamber of the dish washer. Simultaneously thetoothed wheel 16 is turned such that clogged detergent, if any, in the storage compartment is divided up. Thepin 42 of thesleeve 43 will during the last turn gradually be moved into thegroove 41 of the follower 38 and abut the stop which forms the end of the groove. Further rotation of theshaft 32 now means that the follower 38 follows the rotation since the oppositly directed friction forces are overcome. This means that the axial movement of the conveyor screw is stopped whereas the shaft rotates a predetermined number of revolutions such that a suitable amount of detergent is dispensed. - Then the electric motor is reversed which means that the
pin 42 immediately disengages the follower 38 and that thepin 35 disengages the stop 33 at the same time as the screw conveyor without rotating moves at right in Fig. 4. At the end of this movement thepin 36 engages the stop 34 which means that theconveyor screw 20 is rotated in the opposite direction as before at the same time as the screw conveyor is moved further to the right in Fig. 4 During the lastmentioned movement the sealing washer engages theedge 27 and is deformed heavily which means that the sealing surface will be cleaned carefully because of the simultaneous axial and turning motion. Thus the powder which is present between thethreads 21 close to theshaft 22 will again be moved back towards the storage compartment during the closing movement which means that a free space is created between the outlet opening and the powder and hence prevents a direct transfer of damp into the powder. - By means of the arrangemant described above a sufficient sealing function is achieved between the treatment chamber and the storage compartment preventing damp from penetrating into the powder in the storage compartment at the same time as the sealing arrangemant is self cleaning and shaped such that the closing turning moment when the sealing is closed will easily be overcome when the sealing is opened even if some damp after all should penetrate to the conveyor screw.
