Abstract
Method for limiting the pressure drops during a catalytic hydrotreatment process in a fixed bed reactor. The liquid charge and the gaseous reagent are injected into the reactor on either side of the bed and circulate against the current. The limitation of the pressure drops is obtained by the homogeneous mixture within the bed of solid catalytic and / or inert particles of different average diameter.
Description
The present invention relates to the hydrotreatment (HDT) of hydrocarbon fractions for produce hydrocarbon fractions low in sulfur, nitrogen and compounds aromatics usable in particular in the field of fuels for engines with internal combustion. These hydrocarbon fractions include jet fuel, fuel diesel and kerosene. In this field, the invention finds more particularly its application during transformation processes of a middle distillate and more particularly a diesel cut in order to produce a high cetane index fuel, flavored and desulfurized. The invention can also be applied to the hydrotreatment of more heavy, alone or mixed with diluents, for example from hydrocarbon fractions from atmospheric or vacuum distillation as part of operations hydrodemetallization (HDM), hydrodesulfurization (HDS) or hydrodenitrogenation (HDN).
The present process can thus be implemented both to improve the characteristics of the finished products in terms of specifications required to achieve product quality and pollution standards (sulfur and aromatic content in particular) only for prepare charges for refinery conversion or conversion units (visbreaking, coking or catalytic cracking for a vacuum distillate, isomerization or reforming for a naphtha for example) using catalysts sensitive to impurities (for example sulfur for metallic catalysts, nitrogen for acidic catalysts and metals in general).
Thus, in the context of the desulphurization and the aromatization of diesel fractions, the current legislation in most industrialized countries requires usable fuel in said engines contains less than about 500 parts of sulfur per million by weight (ppm). In the vast majority of these countries, there is currently no standards imposing a maximum content of aromatics and nitrogen. We note however that several countries or states, like Sweden and California, plan to limit the aromatic content less than 20% by volume, or even less than 10 % by volume and some experts even think that this content could be limited to 5% in volume. In Sweden, in particular, certain classes of diesel fuel must already meet very strict specifications. In this country, Class II diesel fuel does not must not contain more than 50 ppm of sulfur and more than 10% by volume of compounds aromatic and that of class I more than 10 ppm of sulfur and 5% by volume of compounds aromatics. Currently in Sweden Class III diesel fuel must contain less than 500 ppm sulfur and less than 25% by volume of aromatic compounds. Limits Similar must also be observed for the sale of this type of fuel in California.
Currently, French legislation requires a minimum cetane number of 51, but it is foreseeable that in the near future this minimum index will be at least 53 (as this is already the case for class I fuel in Sweden) and probably even at least minus 55 and more likely between 55 and 65.
Many specialists are seriously considering the possibility of having in the future a standard imposing a nitrogen content below for example around 200 ppm and even certainly less than 100 ppm. Indeed a low nitrogen content allows to obtain a better stability of the products and will generally be sought as well by the seller of the product only by the manufacturer.
On the other hand, heavy residual cuts from atmospheric or vacuum distillation contain within asphaltenes organometallic compounds in which we find metals (nickel, vanadium, etc.) poisons of the catalysts used in the context of catalytic conversion of hydrocarbon fractions from vacuum distillation. If in the in the case of metal content no standard is imposed in automotive fuels (setting apart from the lead content in gasoline), the elimination of metals by hydrotreatment therefore turns out to be a necessity.
In general, it is therefore necessary to develop reliable and effective for the reduction of aromatic, sulfur and nitrogen contents than metals. The method according to the present invention relates in a more general context any process in which a fixed bed is used in a reactor during a catalytic process and in which a liquid charge and a gaseous reagent are injected into the share reactor and on the other side of the bed and run against the current in said bed. More specifically, the process finds its application in the field of hydrotreating petroleum fractions. The disadvantages and advantages of the various methods known from the prior art in this field and the technical solutions proposed were recently described by S.T.
The main constraint linked to this type of device (fixed bed and against the current of fluids reagents) is the possible existence of a congestion phenomenon limiting the possible flow of each of the phases being able to pass through the catalytic bed. The risk is thus for the strong gas pressures most often required for hydrotreatments phase drive liquid through the gas phase flowing against the current. In order to limit said risks engorgement, a flow against the current cannot therefore be reasonably envisaged only if the pressure drops within the catalytic bed are minimized. It is known that a small catalyst causes a large pressure drop. In order to increase the range of possible flow rates, increasing the conventional dimensions of the particles of supported catalyst generally adopted for fixed beds (0.5 to 10 mm) seems a priori necessary. However, a larger size of the catalyst grains results in a decrease in catalytic activity within the reaction bed due to diffusion intraparticular limited load in large particles.
The object of the present invention is a method for limiting the pressure losses linked for the use in a fixed bed reactor of a circulation of fluids against the current during of a catalytic hydrotreatment process while retaining catalytic activity acceptable within the mixture of particles used.
According to the invention, it has also been found that it is possible to limit, by dissociating them, the hydrodynamic problems linked to pressure drops within the catalytic bed (phenomenon engorgement) and the kinetics of the chemical reaction (size and activity of the catalyst).
In other words, one of the objects of the invention is to conserve a catalytic activity reasonable within the bed while minimizing pressure losses.
By way of example and in a non-limiting framework, it has been chosen in the following description of the present invention the example of the hydrotreatment methods making it possible to obtain from conventional diesel fractions from direct distillation or from catalytic cracking (LCO cut) or another conversion process (coking, visbreaking, hydroconversion of residue etc.) a product having improved characteristics both in as regards the cetane number and the thermal stability as the aromatic contents, in olefins, sulfur and nitrogen.
- a gas rich in H2S, nitrogen and impurities,
- light products which result from the decomposition of impurities, the elimination of nitrogen and sulfur leading in effect to the destruction of numerous molecules and to the production of lighter fractions,
- a hydrorefined product with the same volatility as the filler but with improved characteristics.
- the reaction temperature must be sufficient to allow activation of the reaction. However, the increase in the reaction temperature is limited by the formation of coke. It is generally between 340 and 370 ° C.
- The hydrogen pressure must be high (of the order of 60 bars at 350 ° C for a diesel HDS and more than 80 bars for a diesel HDA at the same temperature) to shift the reactions in the favorable direction, minimize parasitic radical reactions (leading, for example, to thermal cracking and / or to polymerization and condensation of polynuclear aromatics) and the deposition of coke on the surface of the catalyst which shortens its lifetime. In general, the higher the hydrogen pressure, the higher the cut.
- a first reactor for hydrodesulfurization (HDS), said hydrotreatment leading to the production of an effluent freed from most of its sulfur components.
- a second reactor corresponding more specifically to a hydrodearomatization zone (HDA) in which the catalyst used generally comprises a noble metal or a noble metal compound from group VIII of the periodic table.
Cette technologie est par exemple décrite dans le brevet US 5,114,562.An intermediate stripping zone placed between the two reactors allows the evacuation of the lightest compounds resulting from the hydrodesulfurization reaction (H2S, NH3, etc.).
One of the advantages of a two-step process (with at least partial desulfurization of the feed during the first step) thus lies in the possibility of using in the second reactor a catalyst more specifically dedicated to the hydrogenation of aromatic nuclei (with the lowest reactivity) without problem of deactivation of the latter by H2S. This technology is for example described in US patent 5,114,562.
It is common to use fixed bed processes for hydrotreating hydrocarbons. The more often the gas and liquid phases are in co-current flow descending along the reactor and through the catalytic bed. We will cite for example the patents US 5,292,428 and US 5,741,414 where such technology is applied. If such a provision seems a priori the easier to apply, it poses several difficulties, however: fluids must approach a piston type flow, i.e. the phases gaseous and liquid flow with identical linear velocities along the axis of the reactor. This requires that the catalytic volumes are large due to the speeds low spatial and high flow rates. To limit pressure losses, the reactors have necessarily the highest possible diameters and the low linear speeds of the fluids in reactors requires distribution systems within these same very efficient reactors. In addition, the exothermicity of the reaction makes it difficult to control the temperature along the reactor and most often imposes a strategy for managing temperatures and the injection of a cooling gas also called by specialists in this quench gas field directly in the reactor between the catalytic beds, most often followed by a redistribution of the reaction fluids. Finally, during the operation of the reactor, it is known that a co-current flow of reactants leads to the deposition of molecules of sulfur or coke which obstructs the entry of the pores of the catalyst, in the upper part of the fixed beds. These phenomena are responsible for deactivation of the catalyst and significant pressure losses.
On citera à titre d'exemple les brevets US 3,147, 210 ou US 3,788,976. To avoid such problems, counter-current circulation within reactors fixed bed catalysts between the fluid phases has already been described in the prior art. We will quote at By way of example, the patents US 3,147, 210 or US 3,788,976. It is thus possible to have a better temperature control along the reactor and better efficiency since the reaction is more homogeneous within the bed.
In the case of the hydrogenation of aromatics in a cut of hydrocarbons containing small amounts of sulfur (corresponding to the second HDA stage of the process previously described) the hydrogen sulfide formed is stripped from its appearance. In one flow against the current, pure hydrogen is generally introduced near the lower part of the catalytic bed and is immediately brought into contact with a fraction liquid hydrocarbon already substantially free of most of the sulfur it contained at the reactor inlet. The hydrogenating activity of aromatic cycles is then maximum without risk of deactivation of the catalyst comprising a noble metal by the sulfide hydrogen. In addition, it is possible in this case to eliminate a product in the gas phase. intermediate and to minimize the radical side reactions already mentioned.

These conditions may be tightened so as to obtain, after the second step, a fuel containing less than 10% by volume of aromatic compounds or even less than 5% by volume of aromatic compounds, less than 50 ppm or even less than 10 ppm of sulfur, less of 50 ppm, or even less than 20 ppm of nitrogen or even less than 10 ppm and having a cetane number of at least 50 and even of at least 55 and most often between 55 and 60.
To obtain such results, the conditions of step a) include a temperature from about 260 ° C to about 450 ° C, a total pressure from about 2 MPa to about 20 MPa and an overall hourly space velocity of liquid charge of about 0.1 to about 4 and that of stage b) a temperature of approximately 100 ° C to approximately 400 ° C, a total pressure of approximately 3 MPa at around 15 MPa.
La quantité de métal ou du composé de métal du groupe VIB exprimée en poids de métal par rapport au poids du catalyseur fini sera de préférence d'environ 2 à 30% et le plus souvent d'environ 5 à 25 % et celle du métal ou du composé de métal du groupe VIII sera de préférence d'environ 0,5 à 15% et le plus souvent d'environ 1 à 10 %.The catalyst used in step a) contains on a mineral support at least one metal or composed of metal of group VIB of the periodic table of the elements in a quantity expressed by weight of metal relative to the weight of the finished catalyst usually about 0.5 to 40%, at least one non-noble metal or compound of non-noble metal from group VIII of said periodic classification in an amount expressed by weight of metal relative to the weight of the finished catalyst usually about 0.1 to 30%. Often the catalyst used will also contain at least one element chosen from the group formed by silicon, the phosphorus and boron or compounds of this or these elements. When one wishes to remain in a relatively low pressure range while wishing to obtain excellent results it is possible to carry out a first step a1) in conditions to reduce the sulfur content of the product to around 500 at 800 ppm and then send this product in a subsequent step a2) in which the conditions will be chosen to bring the sulfur content down to about 100 ppm, preferably less than about 50 ppm and the product resulting from this step a2) is then sent to step b). In this embodiment, the conditions of step a2) are softer than when for a given load we operate in a single step a) since the product sent in this step a2) already has a greatly reduced sulfur content. In this embodiment, the catalyst of step a1) can be a conventional catalyst of the art such as that described in the text of patent applications on behalf of the Applicant FR-A-2197966 and FR-A-2538813 and that of step a2) is that described above for step a). It would not be departing from the scope of the present invention to use the same catalyst in steps a1) and a2).
In these steps a), a1), a2) the mineral support of the catalyst is preferably chosen from the group formed by alumina, silica, silica-aluminas, zeolites and mixtures of at minus two of these mineral compounds. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the catalyst for these steps a), a1), a2) will include at least one metal or a metal compound chosen from the group formed by the molybdenum and tungsten and at least one metal or a metal compound selected from the group formed by nickel, cobalt and iron. The catalyst used in step c) contains on a mineral support at least one metal noble or a compound of noble metal from group VIII of the periodic table in an amount expressed by weight of metal relative to the weight of the finished catalyst of approximately 0.01 to 20% and preferably at least one halogen. The mineral support of the catalyst used in step c) is chosen independently of the support used for the catalyst in step a). Most often the catalyst of step c) comprises at least one metal or a compound of noble metal chosen from the group formed by palladium and platinum.
The mineral support of the catalyst used in step c) is usually chosen from the group formed by alumina, silica, silica-aluminas, zeolites and mixtures of at minus two of these mineral compounds. This support will preferably include at least one halogen chosen from the group formed by chlorine, fluorine, iodine and bromine and preferably in the group formed by chlorine and fluorine. In an advantageous embodiment, this carrier will include chlorine and fluorine. The amount of halogen will most often from about 0.5 to about 15% by weight relative to the weight of the support. The most support often used is alumina. The halogen is usually introduced onto the support from corresponding acid halides and platinum or palladium from aqueous solutions their salts or compounds such as for example hexachloroplatinic acid in the case of platinum.
The invention will be better understood on reading the following examples which illustrate the invention without limiting its scope:
The mixture is desulphurized on a conventional desulphurization unit and then stripped in a first step.
More specifically, a catalyst marketed by the company Procatalyse under the reference HR 448 and containing nickel and molybdenum is placed in a 1 liter (l) reactor. After activation of the catalyst by sulfurization, the unit is maintained under a pressure of 5 MPa and at a temperature of 340 ° C. The diesel charge is injected with a VVH of 1.5 h -1 . A quantity of hydrogen corresponding to an H2 / Charge ratio of 400l / l is injected, the charge and hydrogen mixture passing through the catalytic bed in upward flow. Under these conditions, the sulfur content is reduced to 50 ppm.
The most volatile components of the diesel cut thus obtained are then removed by stripping against the current with hydrogen under atmospheric pressure (about 0.1 Mpa) and at a temperature of 80 ° C.
The characteristics of the diesel cut before and after this first desulfurization and stripping step are given in Table 1, columns 1 and 2 respectively.
- Pression totale=5 MPa
- Débit H2 = 400 litres H2 / litre de charge
- Température =300 °C
This 2 nd step is carried out with upward co-current flow of the fluids. The hydrogen is injected co-current with the feed and is not recycled.
The catalyst is in the form of extrudates with a diameter of 1.2 mm and a length of 4 mm. The average diameter calculated according to the formula described above is 1.5 mm.
The operating conditions are as follows:
- VVH (hourly volume speed relative to the volume of catalyst) = 2 h -1
- Total pressure = 5 MPa
- H2 flow = 400 liters H2 / liter of charge
- Temperature = 300 ° C
This produces a very deeply flavored product (polyaromatic content less than 1%). Its detailed characteristics are shown in Table 1, column 3. Determination of the distribution of boiling points by phase chromatography gas of the various hydrocarbon fractions obtained according to standard ASTM D2887 (simulated distillation Sim Dist) shows a significant decrease in the temperature of different points on the distillation curve when the treatment is carried out in two stages.
As a filler is used desulfurized gas oil and stripped from the first step described in the previous example and whose characteristics are reported in Column 2 of Table 1. Step 2 is carried out in a pilot unit which is disposed in one liter of catalyst marketed by the company Procatalyse under the reference LD402 and operating against the current of fluids at a pressure of 5 Mpa and a temperature of 300 ° C. The unit charge flows in downward flow while the hydrogen flows in upward flow in the reactor. A congestion phenomenon is observed and most of the injected charge is driven by the gas flow and does not pass through the reactor.
We have desulphurized and stripped diesel from the first step described in Example 1.
As in Example 2, the 2nd step is carried out in a pilot unit operating against the flow of fluids. The unit charge flows in downward flow while the hydrogen flows in upward flow in the reactor.
Unlike the previous case, the LD402 catalyst is not loaded as it is in the unit, but is diluted with alumina beads 5 mm in diameter (and of average diameter). The mixture consists in volume for half of catalyst LD402 and for half of alumina beads. This unit is charged with 1 liter of the substantially homogeneous mixture of catalyst and alumina beads.
- Pression totale=50 bar
- Débit H2 = 400 1.H2/l. de charge
- Température =300 °C
The operating conditions are as follows:
- VVH (VVH relative to the volume of catalyst) = 6 h -1
- Total pressure = 50 bar
- H2 flow = 400 1.H2 / l. dump
- Temperature = 300 ° C
Its detailed characteristics are reported in comparison of the effluents from example 1 in table 1, column 4.
It is observed that the qualities of the diesel obtained are similar to that of the previous example despite a VVH three times higher.
Without departing from the scope of the invention, the present process can be applied to desulfurization, denitrogenation and de-aromatization of diesel cuts, kerosene cuts, distillates under vacuum from a refining unit or white oils.
