The pharmaceutical grade extract must pass extensive safety and efficacy procedures. As employed in the practice of the invention, the extract has a minimum triptolide content of about 0.01 to 0.5 percent by weight. Preferably, the minimum triptolide content is about 0.1 percent by weight. It is thought that Tripterygium wilfordii acts by the mechanism depicted in Figure 1 to reduce the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), an enzyme involved in prostaglandin synthesis.
