Additionally, as fuel within the auxiliary chamber 40a is only pressurised to a relatively low level, and therefore is negligibly affected by loss of volume due to compressibility so that minimising the volume of the pressurised chambers is unimportant, both the flow of fuel to the auxiliary chamber 40a and from the auxiliary chamber 40a can pass through a common flow passage 46, thereby providing a further benefit in terms of pump size and complexity.
  • the present invention provides the further advantage that the plunger return stroke is driven by means of fuel pressure within the working chambers defined, in part, by the bores 70a, 70b, 70c provided in the tappet members, thereby removing the need for a relatively large spring. Additionally, the arrangement of flow paths required to provide communication between the auxiliary pumping chambers 40a, 40b, 40c and the pumping chambers 22a, 22b, 22c is relatively simple.

Claims (13)

  1. Pompe à carburant comprenant une pluralité de dispositifs de pompage espacés de manière radiale (10a, 10b, 10c), dont chacun comprend un piston de pompage (20a, 20b, 20c) qui effectue des va-et-vient dans un orifice de piston (19a, 19b, 19c) formé dans un logement de pompe (18) sous l'influence d'un élément de poussoir entraíné respectif (24a, 24b, 24c) qui agit pour transmettre une force au piston de pompage (20a, 20b, 20c) pendant un mouvement vers l'avant de celui-ci, l'orifice de piston (19a, 19b, 19c) définissant une chambre de pompage (22a, 22b, 22c) dans laquelle la pressurisation du carburant à un niveau relativement élevé se produit lors du mouvement de va-et-vient du piston de pompage dans l'orifice de piston, dans laquelle une région d'extrémité de l'élément de poussoir (24a, 24b, 24c) est muni d'un autre orifice (70a, 70b, 70c), une surface associée avec la région d'extrémité de l'élément de poussoir (24a, 24b, 24c) définissant, partiellement, une chambre de pompage auxiliaire annulaire (40a, 40b, 40c) pour le carburant, l'autre orifice (70a, 70b, 70c) définissant une chambre de travail (51a, 51b, 51c) disposée pour recevoir du carburant pour générer une force sur l'élément de poussoir (24a, 24b, 24c) qui agit dans une direction de retour de manière à augmenter le volume de la chambre de pompage (22a, 22b, 22c) pendant un mouvement de retour du piston de pompage, la pompe à carburant comprenant en outre un passage principal d'alimentation (34) fournissant une communication entre la chambre de pompage auxiliaire (40a, 40b, 40c) d'un premier dispositif de pompage (10a) et la chambre de pompage (22b, 22c) d'au moins un des autres dispositifs de pompage (10a, 10b) de manière à ce que le carburant déplacé de la chambre de pompage auxiliaire (40a, 40b, 40c), en cours d'utilisation, peut être fourni par le passage principal d'alimentation (34) à ladite au moins une des autres chambres de pompage (22b, 22c), dans laquelle les chambres de pompage auxiliaires (40a, 40b, 40c) et le passage principal d'alimentation (34) sont construits et adaptés pour assurer l'écoulement du carburant à travers le passage d'alimentation en carburant secondaire (43) à une vitesse d'écoulement sensiblement constante pour une vitesse de rotation donnée de la pompe.
  2. Pompe à carburant selon la revendication 1, dans laquelle la chambre de pompage auxiliaire (40a, 40b, 40c) est définie par la région d'extrémité de l'élément de poussoir et un orifice de poussoir (26a, 26b, 26c) est fourni dans le logement de pompe (18).
  3. Pompe à carburant selon la revendication 1 ou la revendication 2, dans laquelle l'élément de poussoir (24a, 24b, 24c) est muni d'un dispositif de ressort associé (48) qui sert à pousser le piston de pompage (20a, 20b, 20c) vers l'extérieur depuis l'orifice de piston (19a, 19b, 19c).
  4. Pompe à carburant selon l'une quelconque des revendications 1 à 3, dans laquelle les chambres de travail (51a, 51b, 51c) communiquent les unes avec les autres à travers un passage d'écoulement de retour de poussoir commun (52), et dans laquelle le passage d'écoulement de retour de poussoir commun (52) est muni d'un dispositif d'amortissement (62) qui sert à minimiser les variations de pression dans le passage d'écoulement de retour de poussoir commun (52).
  5. Pompe à carburant selon la revendication 4, dans laquelle l'élément de poussoir (24a, 24b, 24c) est formé pour assurer que la chambre de travail (51a, 51b, 51c) communique avec le passage d'écoulement de retour de poussoir (52) sur toute l'étendue du mouvement avant et sur toute l'étendue du mouvement de retour.
  6. Pompe à carburant selon l'une quelconque des revendications 1 à 5, dans laquelle le passage d'alimentation en carburant secondaire (43) est muni d'un dispositif de mesure à clapet (36) servant à réguler la vitesse d'écoulement du carburant dans les chambres de pompage (22a, 22b, 22c).
  7. Pompe à carburant selon l'une quelconque des revendications 1 à 6, dans laquelle chacune des chambres de pompage auxiliaire (40a, 40b, 40c) est munie d'un dispositif d'entrée à clapet respectif (42a, 42b, 42c) pour contrôler l'écoulement de carburant dans la chambre de pompage auxiliaire associée (40a, 40b, 40c) et un dispositif de sortie à clapet respectif (44a, 44b, 44c) pour contrôler l'écoulement du carburant entre la chambre de pompage auxiliaire associée (40a, 40b, 40c) et le passage d'écoulement de pression de transfert (43).
  8. Pompe à carburant selon la revendication 7, dans laquelle chaque dispositif d'entrée à clapet (42a, 42b, 42c) est construit et adapté pour assurer que l'écoulement du carburant dans la chambre de pompage auxiliaire associée (40a, 40b, 40c) est n'est sensiblement pas restreint.
  9. Pompe à carburant selon la revendication 8, dans laquelle chaque dispositif de sortie à clapet (44a, 44b, 44c) est construit et adapté pour assurer que l'écoulement du carburant depuis la chambre de pompage auxiliaire associée (40a, 40b, 40c) n'est sensiblement pas restreint.
  10. Pompe à carburant selon l'une quelconque des revendications 1 à 9, dans laquelle chaque orifice de piston (19a, 19b, 19c) a, associé avec celui-ci, un dispositif d'entrée à clapet supplémentaire (32a, 32b, 32c) servant à contrôler l'écoulement du carburant dans la chambre de pompage respective (22a, 22b, 22c) et un dispositif de sortie à clapet supplémentaire (28a, 28b, 28c) servant à contrôler l'écoulement du carburant depuis la chambre de pompage respective (22a, 22b, 22c) à un passage d'écoulement de livraison (31, 30).
  11. Pompe à carburant selon l'une quelconque des revendications 1 à 10, dans laquelle l'élément de poussoir (24a, 24b, 24c) de chaque dispositif de pompage est muni d'une perforation s'étendant radialement (72) qui fournit une communication entre la chambre de travail associée (51a, 51b, 51c) et une ouverture (74) fournie sur la surface dudit élément de poussoir (24a, 24b, 24c), l'ouverture (74) communiquant avec le passage d'écoulement de retour de poussoir commun (52).
  12. Pompe à carburant selon la revendication 11, dans laquelle l'ouverture (74) est formée de manière à avoir une périphérie extérieure ayant une dimension relativement petite comparée à un diamètre extérieur de l'élément de poussoir associé (24a, 24b, 24c).
  13. Pompe à carburant selon l'une quelconque des revendications 1 à 12, dans laquelle la pompe à carburant comprend trois pistons de pompage radialement espacés (20a, 20b, 20c).
