Claims (10)

  1. Method for adhering a cover sheet (10), which is adapted to be equipped with a guard (8), to the edges (7) of the spine (5) of a book block (3) formed from bound printed sheets and carried by means of a circulating conveying device (1), the cover sheet (10) which is to be combined with a guard (8) being transferred to the book block's spine (5), for positioning, at the same rate of travel as the book block (3) and in approximately the same direction as said book block's direction of travel F, and being joined to the book block (3) on subsequently passing through a contact pressure section (2),

  2. Method according to claim 1, characterised in that the means of applying pressure employed is compressed air which acts on the protruding elements, or a holding-down device which operates by means of a form-fit or friction-fit.
  3. Method according to claim 2, characterised in that the compressed air is supplied in a controlled manner.
  4. Method according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the cover sheets (10) are given an application of size (13) on the face that is nearest to the guard (8).
  5. Apparatus for carrying out the method according to any one of claims 1 to 4, comprising a cover sheet transfer device arranged along a conveying device (1) for the book blocks (3) and a guard transfer device, connected downstream of both of which is a contact pressure device (9) which operates on the cover sheet (9), characterised in that operatively associated with the cover sheet and guard transfer device is a compressed air feeding device (15) which operates on those elements (14) of the guard (8) that protrude laterally beyond the book block (3) or an adjustable holding-down device.
  6. Apparatus according to claim 5, characterised in that the compressed air feeder (15) or the holding-down device is arranged opposite at least one transfer roller (12) upon which the cover sheet (10) is supported.
  7. Apparatus according to claim 6, characterised in that the compressed air feeder (15) is connected to a compressed air source.
  8. Apparatus according to claim 6 or 7, characterised in that the speed and quantity of the compressed air supplied can be set and adjusted.
  9. Apparatus according to any one of claims 5 to 8, characterised in that the compressed air feeder (15) is designed to be adjustable to suit the thickness of the book block.
  10. Use of the method according to any one of claims 1 to 4 on a flexible binding machine or a sizing machine for the manufacture of books.
