Definitions
- the invention relates to a polymer dispersion with improved biodegradability.
- a printing paste consists essentially of water, a thickener and a dye and depending on the applied printing process other tools.
- Textile printing processes can be divided into pigment printing, dye printing, carpet printing, carpet spraying and others.
- Dye classes used are, for example, pigments, reactive dyes, disperse dyes, acid dyes, basic dyes, metal complex dyes and / or vat dyes.
- rotary printing, planographic printing, roller printing, injection printing, inkjet, space, Vigoureux and others are used as printing presses.
- Known synthetic pressure thickeners usually comprise polyacrylates or copolymers of acrylic acid with further ethylenically unsaturated compounds, which may additionally be crosslinked.
- the pure polyacrylic acid derivatives are powdery and thus only of limited suitability for automatic metering devices.
- a MAC value maximum workplace concentration for powdered polyacrylic acid was established in the newly introduced category 4 (non-genotoxic carcinogens with the possibility of setting limit values). Restrictions on the handling of powdery polyacrylic acid are possible for the future.
- Pasty thickeners currently on the market are predominantly based on mineral oil as water-in-oil emulsions with high solids content and lead to a wastewater contamination with biologically poorly or not at all degradable hydrocarbons.
- the mineral oils are deposited in the sewage sludge in the sewage sludge and degraded by microorganisms only in very small quantities.
- the prerequisite for the use of pasty formulations of pulverulent polyacrylic acid derivatives is the production of a stable dispersion.
- a number of factors are responsible, such as viscosity, rheology, density of the carrier medium, pH, degree of filling, use of dispersants and more.
- the viscosity carrier media with too low viscosity are less suitable, because this stable preparations can be obtained only with difficulty. But too high a viscosity is unfavorable because it can no longer be processed in automatic paint kitchens the pasty polyacrylic acid derivatives.
- the polyacrylic acid In order to obtain polyacrylates with good thickening effect, the polyacrylic acid must be neutralized.
- the prior art includes in particular ammonium, sodium, potassium salts and quaternary amines.
- EP 0 208 217 A describes environmentally friendly flocculant organosols based on dicarboxylic acid esters. These are produced economically and with consistent quality in large-scale syntheses.
- the biodegradation is therefore from the oxygen-containing centers of the molecule, optionally after prior hydrolytic cleavage of the ester group, for example catalyzed by enzymes from, wherein both the carbon chains of the dicarboxylic acid and the alcohol are microbially degraded by ⁇ -oxidation as much as possible.
- oil phase can be a mixture of aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons with natural vegetable or animal triglycerides and fatty acid monoesters, especially C 1-4 -alkyl esters of C 12-24 fatty acids.
- EP 0 045 720 A and EP 0 080 976 A describe water-in-oil emulsion polymers for use in cosmetic compositions which, as oil phase in the polymerization, hydrophobic organic liquids such as aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons, oils of animal or vegetable origin and the corresponding denatured oils.
- the present invention is based on the problem of wastewater pollution by hydrocarbons through the pasty formulation of pressure thickeners. At the same time, easier to handle pasty formulations of polymers should be developed.
- the invention relates to a thickener formulation comprising one or more polymers in a completely or partially biodegradable synthetic carrier medium.
- biodegradable synthetic carrier media are advantageously used.
- the invention particularly relates to a thickener formulation comprising one or more polymers and a synthetic carrier medium based on a biodegradable component or a mixture of biodegradable components or a mixture of one or more biodegradable components with one or more less readily degradable components.
- polymer dispersion in the sense of the present invention also encompasses emulsions of polymers.
- Natural vegetable oils or their derivatives often consist of a mixture of different fatty acids. They contain residues of different chain length and different degree of saturation, depending on the respective plant base. In some cases, only a minor amount of polymer may be incorporated into a vegetable oil than in formulations based on mineral oil or synthetic carrier media. For the purposes of the present invention, these are therefore less suitable as a carrier medium for the polymer dispersion.
- synthetic carrier media Compared to vegetable oils, synthetic carrier media have the advantage that they can be produced in a consistent quality. As a rule, they contain one or more defined compounds or, in the case of multiple esters, the acid in various esterification stages. Furthermore, it has been found that in synthetic carrier media in many cases a higher active content of polymer dispersions be achieved. This means that more powdery polyacrylic acid can be dispersed in a synthetic carrier medium before its viscosity becomes too high or the resulting pasty formulation has insufficient storage stability. Another advantage of certain synthetic organic carrier media is improved storage stability over a mineral oil-based carrier medium.
- Another advantage of synthetic organic carrier media is improved aging resistance compared to bio-oils, and associated non-changing odor and consistency.
- bio-oils may become unpleasant after aging due to aging, and the consistency of the system may change (skin formation, viscosity change).
- Monoesters which are liquid at room temperature and also at lower temperatures can be used as synthetic carrier media.
- esters of linear C 1 to C 30 carboxylic acids of the "fatty" acid radical which may also be branched or mono- or polyunsaturated and substituted in ethers or hydroxy groups.
- the linear, branched, saturated, mono- or polyunsaturated, optionally substituted with ether or hydroxy groups alcohol component can be formed from C 1 to C 30 alcohols having one or more hydroxyl groups, as is the case with vegetable oils with the trihydroxy compound glycerol.
- short-chain organic acids such as acetic acid, propionic acid and others can also be used for the esterification.
- it is equally possible to use short-chain alcohols such as methanol, ethanol and others with long-chain acids or polyacids.
- the ester grouping may also be present in the esters of dicarboxylic acids or compounds having 3 or more carboxyl groups, as for example in derivatives of citric acid. Not necessarily all carboxyl groups must be esterified.
- Suitable acid components are, in addition to the preferred saturated ones, those with unsaturated C-C bonds, for example oleic acid. This applies above all to transesterified esters of natural origin and also mixtures of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids.
- the present invention thus also encompasses the use of transesterified products of natural or synthetic origin.
- esters which are prepared from glycerol, diglycerol, triglycerol or tetraglycerin, including per se known alcoholic polyglycerols. Both mixed esters and esters of a single acid can be prepared.
- Glycerol can be completely or partially esterified.
- other polyhydric alcohols may also be used as the alcohol component, for example, the saccharides in the open-chain reduced form, such as mannitol or sorbitol.
- the polyols can only be esterified just as in the case of sorbitan monofatty acid esters or else several times.
- esters of saccharides and oligosaccharides can be used.
- the invention also relates to mixtures of biodegradable synthetic carrier media with inert hydrophobic liquids which are less readily biodegradable, for example kerosenes, naphthas, isoparaffins, mineral oil or else mixtures of biodegradable synthetic carrier media with naturally occurring oils.
- Suitable polymers (e) are in particular the polymers of monomers having an ethylenically unsaturated double bond, for example unsaturated carboxylic acids such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, maleic acid, itaconic acid, ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid esters such as methyl acrylate, acrylonitriles, ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid anhydrides such as maleic anhydride, ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid amides such as acrylic acid amide , Methacrylamide.
- the polymers can be used as homo- or copolymers.
- Copolymers may also contain other ethylenically unsaturated Monomers such as 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), vinylsulfones, vinylpyrrolidone and / or vinyl acetate or the like.
- AMPS 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid
- vinylsulfones vinylpyrrolidone and / or vinyl acetate or the like.
- the polymers may also be crosslinked to improve the performance properties of the prior art.
- An advantage of the carrier media used according to the invention is the stability with the neutralized, partially neutralized and unneutralized form of the polyacrylic acid.
- preference is given to using the sodium, potassium and ammonium acrylates and the quaternary amines.
- the polymers dispersed in unneutralized form can be neutralized in the dispersed form. This can be done by introducing gaseous, solid or liquid bases such as ammonia, soda or amines.
- the polymers can also be neutralized or partially neutralized with other suitable compounds.
- An advantage of the thickener formulation according to the invention is also the free adjustability of the pH over a wide range. This causes problems with formulations with mineral oil-based carrier oils and can lead to a limited storage stability of the formulation because the stability of the emulsion is dependent on the pH.
- emulsifiers are, for example, sorbitan monostearate and sorbitan monooleate.
- the emulsifiers may preferably be used in amounts of from 0.1 to 30%, preferably from 1 to 15%, based on the total amount.
- water may also be added to the formulation if appropriate.
- the pasty thickener formulation may also be admixed with auxiliaries from the group of defoamers, acid donors, printing oils, fixing accelerators, coacervating agents and other auxiliaries customary for printing processes. It is also possible to use mixtures of these auxiliaries.
- auxiliaries in the context of the present invention thus include conventional additives known from the textile sector.
- the main field of application of the thickener formulation according to the invention is the dye printing, in particular the printing with dispersion, reactive, acid and metal complex dyes on the substrates polyester, polyamide, wool, cellulosic fibers and in particular carpets.
- thickener formulation according to the invention can be used for carpet spray printing.
- a white to pale beige viscous paste having a viscosity of 6000 mPas (Brookfield RVT, 20 rpm) and pH 6.2 was obtained.
- the paste was self-inverted in water using a dispersant and gave 1.4% in water a viscosity of 13600 mPas (Brookfield RVT, 20 rpm).
- the paste-like formulation proved to be absolutely storage-stable both at room temperature and at elevated temperature. No sedimentation of the polymer and no separation of the carrier medium from the paste could be observed.
- the paste-like formulation above was used to make a spray-print paste for use on a Chromojet® CHR LS laboratory press to print a carpet by the spray-printing technique.
- the pasty thickener formulation from example 1 was made to swell with deionized water in a dispersing agent and mixed with the remaining components.
- the injection printing paste was prepared from deionized water, the pasty formulation, citric acid to control the pH, Rapidoprint GT 6 (defoamer) and dye.
- component used amount deionized water 969.72 g pasty formulation of Example 1 7.53 g Rapidoprint GT 6 1 g citric acid 1.05 g Tectilon® Yellow 3R 200% 0.2 g Tectilon® Red 2B 200% 0.2 g Tectilon® Blue 4R01 200% 0.4 g
- the resulting injection printing paste had a viscosity of 1700 mPas (Brookfield RVT, 20 rpm) and a pH of 5.8.
- the pattern created by the injection pressure had a good contour, a good penetration into the fibers of the carpet pattern and showed no color shifts.
- a white to pale beige viscous paste having a viscosity of 11700 mPas (Brookfield RVT, 20 rpm) and pH 6.2 was obtained.
- the paste is self-inverting in water using a dispersing agent and gave a viscosity of 20000 mPas (Brookfield RVT, 20 rpm) 1.4% in water.
- esters were each charged with 200 g and the polyacrylic acid with a speed of 3000 rpm with cooling in a double-walled stainless steel vessel with a toothed wheel dispersed and not neutralized.
- Stable dispersions formed, which are characterized by the time for dispersing the polymer and its viscosity.
