Definitions

  • the present invention relates to mattresses and cushions, more particularly to individually adaptable mattresses and cushions.
  • the present invention can be used for mattresses and cushions used on mattress carriers, for beds, lounge suites, easy chairs, and all sitting, lying and/or sleeping devices where elastomeric foam material forms the basis.
  • Mattresses and cushions have been prefabricated in different formats, with different fillings, and with different characteristics. Certain mattresses or cushions allow no personalisation of the mattress or cushion, nor any later changes.
  • mattresses or cushions consist of different horizontal layers, which are enclosed in a textile envelope, or in a textile envelope provided with a zip closure.
  • Such mattresses or cushions can be made harder or softer as desired by the customer, and if they are provided with a zipper one or more of the layers can be changed after a while.
  • such mattresses and cushions show the disadvantage that they do not have supporting zones which provide different degrees of support for different parts of the body.
  • Personalised mattresses and cushions are known, which have supporting zones which provide differing degrees of support for the head, the shoulders, the lumbar region, the hips, the thighs, the legs and the feet. Such mattresses and cushions are adapted to the person who is going to use the mattress or cushion, according to his/her height, weight, bodily particularities and habits (e.g. sleeping face downwards).
  • Such personalised mattresses or cushions for example can comprise a kind of box consisting of two halves, known as a cassette, for example made from an elastomeric foam such as polyurethane foam, which is filled with packets of feathers, springs or of synthetic material.
  • a person wishing to purchase the mattress or cushion can test such a mattress or cushion, and harder or softer packets can be selected and positioned as required.
  • a mattress or cushion, thus personalised, is ordered in the factory, where the cassette is filled as desired, after which it is closed (by gluing or in any another way).
  • Such mattresses and cushions have the disadvantage that they cannot be changed later on. If, for example, the user of the mattress or cushion grows or looses weight, the filling of the mattress or cushion will not be optimised for his changed figure anymore, and a new mattress or cushion has to be bought.
  • a mattress or cushion comprising two elastically resilient cassette halves, together forming a cassette enclosing an inner space and a plurality of separate or interconnected, replaceable support blocks for filling the inner space of the cassette according to a personally desired pattern.
  • the cassette halves each comprise a planar section over the whole area of the mattress and a raised edged portion over the entire circumference of the planar section, and the cassette halves are oriented with respect to each other in the operative position with the raised edge portions mutually opposed to each other,
  • the raised edge portions of the two cassette halves are attached to each other permanently or formed unitary with each other over only a part of the length thereof.
  • the attachment length is preferably between 40% and 70% of the total length of the edge portions, the total length of which is the length of the perimeter of the planar section. With the exception of the attachment of the part of the edge portions the remaining parts of the planar section and the edge portions are not adhered or permanently attached to each other.
  • the attached part of the edge portions may be formed for example by a seam which is glued or welded. It may also be formed by moulding the cassette in one piece.
  • the attachment or integral formation should be of sufficient length and strength and the width of the edge portions in the direction transverse to the mattress or cushion should be of such a width and stiffness that the cassette forms a stable structure when filled.
  • the unattached lengths of edge portion of the two cassette halves should naturally abut each other without being offset from each other.
  • a mattress or cushion according to the present invention has the advantage that structural amendments can be carried out to the filling of the mattress or cushion in order for the body to be optimally supported. It is an advantage if a person can do this personally and in a simple manner, without having to change the whole mattress or cushion.
  • Fig. 1 shows a first and a second cassette half 4, 6 of the kind used to make a conventional mattress.
  • Each cassette half 4, 6 has a planar section 7 and a raised edge portion 44 over the entire circumference of the planar section 7, the raised edge portion consisting of two longitudinal sides 8, and two transversal sides 10.
  • Each cassette half 4, 6 is fabricated, e.g. moulded in a suitable elastomeric material such as latex or an elastomeric foam material such as polyurethane.
  • first cassette half 4 and a second cassette half 6 are disposed one above the other, with the raised borders 44 oriented towards each other, and thus form a cassette 2 enclosing an inner space.
  • first and the second cassette halves 4, 6 are connected one to the other, for example by gluing the edge portions over their complete length.
  • one of the longitudinal sides 8 and a portion of each of the transverse sides 10 of the first cassette half 4 which are permanently attached to the corresponding sides of the second cassette half 6, thus obtaining an attachment seam 11 and two flaps 80 which can be moved with respect to each other for making accessible the inner space enclosed by the cassette 2, as represented in Fig. 2.
  • the portion of the transverse sides which are attached to each other is typically between 30 and 75% of the length thereof.
  • the attachment may be made with conventional rubber adhesives or cements.
  • Both cassette halves 4, 6 can also be connected to each other by attaching one of the transverse sides 10 and part of each of the longitudinal sides 8 of the first cassette half 4 to the corresponding sides of the second cassette half 6 but this is less preferred if the longitudinal sides are longer than the transverse sides.
  • Another possibility is to mould a whole cassette 2 in one piece, as is represented in Fig. 9.
  • a cassette 2 as represented in Fig. 9 may also be considered as two cassette halves 12, 14, whereby each cassette half 12, 14 is either an upper part or a lower part of the cassette 2.
  • the flaps 80 of both cassette halves 4, 6; 12, 14 can hinge with relation to each other, as represented in Figs. 2, 4, and 9 in order to make the inner volume of the cassette accessible. That way, filling of the interior volume of the mattress or cushion can be accomplished easily.
  • a supplementary strengthening 18 is applied, for example by means of flexible synthetic material or other material, in order to avoid tearing of the cassette 2 at the hinging points 16.
  • a radiused portion may be formed at the hinge in order to avoid tearing when the cassette is opened.
  • a supplementary strengthening 18 is represented in Fig. 3. It shows a rectangular piece of synthetic or other material, divided in three zones: two attachment zones 20, 22, and a folding zone 24 in the middle of both attachment zones.
  • One of the attachment zones 20 is attached to the raised edge portion 44 of the first cassette half 4 or 12, next to a hinging point 16, the other attachment zone 22 is attached to the raised edge portion 44 of the second cassette half 6 or 14, next to the same hinging point 16.
  • a folding zone 24 strengthens the hinging point 16.
  • the interior of the mattress or cushion, the filling of the cassette 2, preferably consists of a plurality of loose, movable support blocks, represented as nine blocks 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42 (hereinafter noted 26-42) in Fig. 4.
  • These support blocks 26-42 may comprise pocket springs with possibly different thickness in steel-wire and/or spring diameter, foam, latex, polyurethane, eider feathers or other materials, such as air, water or gel. Several of these materials may be mixed in one block 26-42.
  • Each of those blocks 26-42 provides a hardness depending on the material used, and a height H which may be selected depending on or independent of the hardness and the height of each of the other blocks 26-42 used.
  • the width W of all blocks 26-42 is preferably, but not necessarily, equal.
  • the length of all blocks 26-42 is preferably equal, and equals the width of the inner space enclosed by the cassette 2, as represented in Fig. 1. All the blocks may be prefabricated into a single support block which fits into the inner volume of the cassette.
  • the composition of the interior of the mattress 2 or cushion may be adapted to create mattresses or cushions which are individually adapted to a person's weight or shape or height, to bodily defects or injuries, to sleeping habits, etc.
  • the mattress 2 or cushion furthermore is individually adaptable in case of persons with a changing weight pattern (gain or loss of weight after a certain time), or for growing persons.
  • the different support blocks 26-42 in one mattress 2 or cushion can be all made of the same material, but they can also be made of a combination of different materials. All blocks can have different material, length, height, width and/or hardness.
  • the interior of the mattress or cushion can be adapted individually to the height of the user, whereby head, shoulders, lumbar region, hips, thighs, legs and feet are optimally supported.
  • the blocks with different heights can also be used for example for persons with a hollow back.
  • the foam material cassette 2, and especially the raised edge portions 44, keep the support blocks 26-42 in the interior together such that the individual blocks 26-42 need not be attached to each other, nor to the cassette 2. This presents the extra advantage that no seams can become loose.
  • the cassettes 2 are moulded with an integrated raised edge portions 44 at the surrounding edge.
  • the raised edge portions 44 have a width and hardness so that the edge portions form a stable edge.
  • the height h1 (Figs. 7B and 7C) of a raised edge portion 44 is preferably between 4 and 8 cm, most preferred 6 cm.
  • the thickness h2 of the planar section 7 is preferably 4 cm.
  • the total height h of planar section 7 and raised edge portion 44 is the sum of both, thus preferably between 8 and 12 cm, and most preferred 10 cm.
  • This stable edge has the advantage that even very soft pocket springs, foam blocks or other materials may be used as blocks 26-42 at the interior of the mattress or cushion without a person rolling off the mattress or cushion when laying close to the edge.
  • cassette halves 4, 6; 12, 14 are moulded with integrated raised edge portion 44 at the surrounding edges, two cassette halves 4, 6; 12, 14 stay abutting each other without offset, even though they are attached to each other over a part of their length.
  • the cassettes 2 are enveloped with a textile cover 46 provided with an openable closure such as a zipper 48.
  • the blocks 26-42 can be changed later on, when the characteristics of the user change. This can be done by the user.
  • Figs. 7A and 8A shows a top view respectively a bottom view of a first cassette half 4.
  • Vertical ventilation channels 50 and horizontal ventilation channels 52 as known in the art are provided in order for moisture to be evacuated out of the mattress or cushion.
  • Fig. 7B shows a longitudinal cross-section of the first cassette half 4 shown in Fig. 7A, along line B-B.
  • the raised edge portions 44 and vertical ventilation channels 50 can be seen.
  • the ventilation channels 50 may have different cross-sectional forms.
  • Fig. 7C shows a transverse cross-section of the first cassette half 4 shown in Fig. 7A, along the line C-C. Raised edge portions 44 and vertical ventilation channels 50 are provided.
  • Fig. 8B shows a longitudinal cross-section of a first cassette half 4 shown in Fig. 8A, along line A-A.
  • the raised edge portions 44, vertical ventilation channels 50 and horizontal ventilation channels 52 are shown.
  • the ventilation channels 50 represented have different shapes in cross-section.
  • Fig. 6 represents a combination of the cross-sections of Figs. 7B and 8B for a first cassette half 4; 12, as well as a cross-section of a second cassette half 6; 14.
  • the cross-section of each cassette half 4, 6; 12, 14 shows the vertical ventilation channels 50 in both the upper part and the bottom part of each cassette half 4, 6; 12, 14. Also horizontal ventilation channels 52 are shown.
