Definitions
- the invention relates to a closed drift plasma thruster. of electron with orientable thrust vector, comprising at least one channel main ring of ionization and acceleration equipped with an anode and means for supplying ionizable gas, a magnetic creation circuit of a magnetic field in said main annular channel, and a hollow cathode associated with means for supplying ionizable gas.
- the orientation of the thrust vector of ion propellants or closed electron drift thrusters enables operations to be carried out attitude control by tracking the thrust vector from the center of gravity of the satellite or on the contrary to eliminate the parasitic couples in aligning the thrust vector so as to follow the displacements of the center of gravity of the satellite induced by thermal deformations and depletion of propellants.
- Ion bombardment thrusters thus use generally a mechanical thrust orientation device.
- the electromagnetic deflection seemed the most suitable. Indeed, the field electric in a plasma thruster is determined by the field magnetic radial in the air gap. If we vary in azimuth the field magnetic radial also varies the electric field. The deformation of the equipotentials then causes an angular deviation of the push vector.
- the outer pole piece is divided into four sectors, each sector being mounted on a magnetic core with a coaxial coil.
- the differential supply of the coils allows modify the azimuthal distribution of the magnetic field.
- EP 0 800 196 A1 also discloses a system thrust orientation according to which four coils mounted on four magnetic cores in the shape of an arc of a circle allow to vary the radial magnetic field in azimuth.
- a simple way to control the push vector can be to use several thrusters whose thrust is individually controlled.
- the invention aims to remedy the aforementioned drawbacks and in particular to allow control of the thrust vector using a system that does not excessively increase the mass of the whole shipped and its cost, and therefore does not include a set complete with multiple thrusters, while ensuring easy and efficient control of the thrust vector orientation, with sufficiently large deflection angles, and without the creation of non-controllable asymmetries.
- a plasma drift thruster closed electron with orientable thrust vector comprising at least one main annular ionization and acceleration channel equipped with an anode and means for supplying ionizable gas, a magnetic circuit of creation of a magnetic field in said main annular channel, and a hollow cathode associated with gas supply means ionizable, characterized in that it comprises a plurality of channels main ionization and acceleration annulars having axes not parallel which converge on the outlet side downstream of said channels main annulars, in that the magnetic circuit creating a magnetic field comprises a first external downstream pole piece common to all annular canals, a second pole piece external common to all the annular canals and arranged upstream of the first external downstream pole piece, a plurality of pole pieces internal in number equal to the number of main annular channels and mounted on the first cores arranged around the axes of the channels main annulars, a plurality of first coils arranged respectively around the plurality of first nuclei, a plurality of second

- the electrical and fluid connections are housed in cavities formed in this base.
- the magnetic circuit can be produced for example in a way similar to that described in US Patent 5,359,258 or in a way similar to that described in French patent application 98 10674 filed August 25, 1998, and illustrated in Figures 3 and 15.
- each annular channel such as 124A is delimited by walls insulating 122A, is open at its downstream end and has a section of frustoconical shape at its upstream part and cylindrical at its downstream part.
- a annular anode 125A has a profiled section in the form of a trunk of cone open downstream.
- Anode 125A may have slots 117A made in the massive part 116A of the anode 125A to increase the contact surface with the plasma.
- 120A gas injection holes ionizable from a 127A ionizable gas distributor are formed in the wall of the anode 125A.
- the 127 A distributor is supplied with gas ionizable by a 126A pipe.
- Anode 125A can be supported compared to the pieces 122A of ceramic material delimiting the channel 124A, for example by a solid 114A baluster with circular section and by at least two balusters 115A thinned into flexible blades.
- a 300A isolator is interposed between line 126A and anode 125A which is connected by an electrical connection 145A to the positive pole of the electrical supply of the anode-cathode discharge.
- the internal pole piece 135A is extended by a core central axial magnet 138 A which is itself extended to the part upstream of the thruster by a plurality of radial arms 352A connected to a second internal conical pole piece 351A.
- a second internal magnetic coil 132A can be placed in the upstream part of the second internal pole piece 351A, outside of the latter.
- Field magnetic of the internal coil 132A is channeled by radial arms 136 placed in the extension of the radial arms 352A, as well as by the external pole piece 311A and internal pole piece 351A.
- a weak air gap 361 can be provided between the radial arms 352A and the arms radial 136.
- Sheets of superinsulating material forming a screen 130A are arranged upstream of the annular channel 124A and the sheets of material super insulation 301A forming a screen are also interposed between the channel 124A and the internal coil 133A.
- 130A, 301A screens eliminate most of the flux radiated through channel 124A to coils 133A, 132A and the base 175.
- cathode 140 As part of the 124A multi-channel plasma thruster, 124B according to the invention it is possible to use a single cathode 140 for supply the two channels 124A, 124B. Indeed, cathode 140 creates a plasma cloud which makes its positioning relatively insensitive by relative to one of the beams and moreover the axes 241A, 241B of the channels 124A, 124B being convergent, this results in a crossing of the beams of plasma which considerably reduces the impedance between the beams. It is however not excluded to add a redundant cathode if this is necessary, especially if the number of channels is higher or equal to four.
- the two-channel thruster 124A, 124B of FIGS. 1 to 3 allows control of the thrust vector along an axis.
- Three-channel propellant configurations 124A to 124 C allow control of the vector pushed along two axes.
- each channel 124A to 124C is surrounded by four external coils 131 in a "diamond" configuration. Some coils 131 cooperate with two neighboring channels, so the total number of external coils 131 is reduced to 7 instead of 12.
- the number of ampere-turns of the external coils 131 is adjusted in depending on the perimeter of pole pieces to be supplied. This number ampere-turns is identical for the four most central coils while the three external coils 131 located in the vicinity of the vertices of the triangle defined by channels 124A to 124C include the two thirds of the number of turns of the 131 central external coils.
- the other main elements of the three-channel propeller 124A, 124B, 124C are similar to those of the two-channel thruster 124A, 124B, in particular with regard to the common light alloy base 175, the common cathode 140, the magnetic cores 138A to 138C of the internal coils 133A to 133C and the magnetic cores 137 of external coils 131 connected together by a network of bars ferromagnetic 136.
- Figures 7 and 8 show a thruster with three annular channels main 124A, 124B, 124C which does not differ from the embodiment of the Figures 5 and 6 only by the number and arrangement of the external coils 131.
- each main annular channel 124A, 124B, 124C is surrounded by five coils forming an irregular pentagon.
- This irregularity is due to the angle of channel convergence, which is around 10 °.
- a regular pentagon could be obtained if the channel convergence angle was more important, of the order of 37 °.
- Some of the external coils 131 are playing a role simultaneously for two or three channels 124A to 124C, so that the total number of external coils 131 is reduced to 10 instead of 15.
- the common pole piece 134 averages the field.
- Figures 7 and 8 are interesting for large thrusters, for which it is better to split the coils 131 in order to lighten the outer pole piece 134.
- the pole piece 134 and the base 175 have the shape of an irregular hexagon with six external coils 131 placed in the vicinity of the vertices of the hexagon and four external coils 131 distributed in a star between the three channels 124A to 124C.
- Figures 9 and 10 show a four-channel thruster main annulars 124A, 124B, 124C, 124D arranged essentially in square and associated with nine external coils 131.
- Each channel 124A to 124D is surrounded by four external coils 131.
- External coils 131 play a role vis-à-vis several channels. Only the coils 131 located near the corners of pole piece 134 and the base 175 of essentially square shape, play a role vis-à-vis only one single channel 124A to 124D. In this way, the number of external coils 131 can be reduced from 16 to 9.
- the angle must be increased 242 from axes 241A to 241D relative to axis 752, this angle 242 becoming double that expected in the case of a twin thruster canals.
- the two main annular channels 124A, 124B and their six associated external coils 131 ensure flexible and easy control the orientation of the vector pushed along a first axis, with an angle can be between 5 ° and 20 °.
- Means of mechanical orientation uniaxes allow to control the orientation of the pushed vector according to a second axis, with a significant angle 783, for example of the order of 50 °.
- a uniaxial mechanical orientation system is much simpler, lighter and more robust than a system two-axis mechanical orientation.
- the center of gravity 751 of the thruster can be located on the axis of rotation 782 of the orientation device, which then dispenses with use a blocking device.
- Angular locking can indeed be obtained directly using a control mechanism of irreversible rotation comprising for example an electric motor 177 and a reduction gear 179.
- the axis of rotation 782 of the cradle 175 of the propellant mechanically oriented can be materialized by two bearings with oblique contact 178 capable of withstanding dynamic forces during from the launch of the propellant.
- At least one of the contact bearings oblique 178 can be mounted on an elastic membrane 781 allowing guarantee constant and independent prestressing of gradients thermal preventing jamming, as described for example in European patent 0 325 073.
- the elastic membrane 781 is itself mounted on a fixed base 176. Electrical connections are ensured by flexible cables and the ionizable gas supply by elastic pipes.
- the two-channel thruster 124A, 124B with orientation uniaxial mechanics is particularly useful when it comes to pointing the vector pushed at a large angle on an axis and at an angle lower on the other.
- the control of the vector thrust is obtained by supplying propellant fluid separately several main annular ionization and acceleration channels 124A to 124D included in a common magnetic circuit 134, connected to a single hollow cathode 140 and single 190 power supply (figure 4).
- a sensor current is located on the current return line (at a neighboring potential of the mass, because equal to the cathode potential minus the voltage drop in the coils)
- the current of each anode it is also necessary to measure the current of each anode.
- the anode potential being 300 V
- a Hall effect sensor on the axis of two wound solenoids in opposition, each solenoid being traversed by the current of a anode.
- FIG. 4 shows the electrical diagram of a thruster with three channels 124A to 124C (therefore with three anodes 125A to 125C).
- Each anode 125A to 125C is connected to the common power supply via a filter consisting of an L-C circuit (911A to 911C). This allows to decouple the frequencies of oscillations between each channel which can be slightly different due to the different mass flow rates.
- FIG. 4 The diagram of Figure 4 is naturally applicable to a mode four-channel embodiment 124A to 124D such as that of FIGS. 9 and 10. In this case, only an additional branch is added whose items are assigned the letter D.
- a chamber in each branch corresponding to a channel 124A to 124D, includes an anode 125A to 125D and a distributor 127A to 127D, supplied with ionizable gas by means of a pipe 118A to 118D, an isolator (300A to 300D) and a flow regulator (185A to 185D), connected by a section of common supply line 126 controlled by a solenoid valve 187.
- the common pipeline 126 also feeds the hollow cathode 140 by means of a pressure drop 186 and an insulator 300. The discharge is established between the hollow cathode 140 and the anodes 125A to 125D by means of a circuit power supply 191.
- the discharge oscillations of the different channels are decoupled by filters 911A to 911D placed between the different anodes 125A to 125D and the cathode 140.
- the current of discharge of each anode is controlled by a servo loop comprising a current sensor 193A to 193D, preferably at galvanically isolated, a regulator 192 receiving a setpoint 922 from push vector deviation for one axis control, or two setpoints 922 push vector deviation for two-axis control, and one setpoint 921 for total discharge current.
- the discharge current and the acceleration of the ions are controlled by the field distribution magnetic determined by the downstream external pole piece 134 common to all channels, the upstream external pole piece 311 common to all channels, the external coils 131 mounted on the cores 137 and the internal pole pieces 135A to 135D mounted on the cores 138A to 138D fitted with coils 133A to 133D.
- the ends of all pole pieces have toroidal profiles coaxial with axes 241A to 241D channels 124A to 124D.
- Internal coils 133A to 133D and external 131 are connected in series between the cathode and the negative terminal of the circuit power supply 191 while the different cores are connected to upstream by ferromagnetic bars 136. Regulation circuits allow to define in each channel 124A to 124D a flow range typically between 50% and 120% of the nominal flow.
- the number of coils external 131 is a multiple of the number of main annular channels 124A to 124D, the coils of each subset of coils 131 assigned to each channel 124A to 124D are connected in series and the different subsets of coils 131 are mounted in parallel, the impedances of the coils connected in series being equal.
