Abstract

The printed document, e.g. a lottery scratch card on which confidential information (2) printed on a base layer (1) is masked by an opaque scratch-off layer (4), has an outer surface layer (5) containing thermochrome pigments which react to a variation in temperature by a reversible change in colour. The pigments can be incorporated in the scratch-off layer (4) itself or in another layer (5) immediately adjacent to it, and this can be covered by an additional overprinted layer (6). When exposed to a temperature of some 25 deg C or e.g. ultraviolet light, an even colour change indicates that the scratch-off layer has not been disturbed. An uneven colouration indicates possible tampering.

Description

The invention relates to printed documents supporting hidden confidential information by an opaque scrapable layer. This information does not can normally only be revealed after destruction by scraping of said layer.

This category of documents includes in particular so-called "instant lottery" game tickets. In these games, the ticket buyer can immediately know the winning nature or not of its purchase by scratching the layer, operation which discovers the message or number concealed from below. Such a scratch-off layer can also be used on different types of documents - such as: gift voucher, sales voucher, etc. - which give rise, for example, to the award of a prize or a gift based on a message, a number, of icons, revealed by scraping the opaque layer.

Any document bearing a part of information including the sender wishes to guarantee confidentiality, as for example a secret code to communicate to a person particular can also be provided with a layer scratch off.

The peculiarity common to all these types of documents is that the total or partial absence of the scratchable layer should clearly reveal whether the message underlying was eventually discovered. If this layer is corrupted when the document reaches its normal recipient is that the secrecy of the document has been pierced, presumably for a fraudulent purpose.

It is fundamental that on such documents the integrity of the scrapable layer is easily verifiable. The very absence of tiny parts of the layer may be enough for the fraudster to take a sufficient knowledge of a hidden message, of a code. he the document should therefore be designed in such a way that that even the alteration of a tiny part of the layer is remarkable enough and obvious enough to arouse suspicion and highlight such fraud.

Similarly, the design of such documents must be such as it is impossible, or at the very least difficult, to partially or completely remove the scrapable layer to read the hidden message, then reconstitute it, or even apply a new layer scratchable in such a way that the document appears intact and non-existent fraud.

Document FR-2 595 987 describes an opaque layer made of brittle ink, covered with a design complicated print, such as a guilloche, so that the fraudster who would operate by abduction and replacement of the diaper would be imposed the very delicate additional work to reconstruct the drawing original overlay.

On connaít par WO 9640394 un procédé d'impression multicouche censé rendre impossible une reproduction après altération de la couche grattable.WO 9640394 discloses a printing method multilayer supposed to make reproduction impossible after alteration of the scrapable layer.

WO 95/14579 part d'une autre approche du problème : l'information cruciale n'est imprimée sur le document qu'au moment de la vente, via un procédé thermique contrôlé par un ordinateur central.WO 95/14579 starts from another approach to the problem: crucial information is only printed on the document that at the time of the sale, via a thermal process controlled by a central computer.

Using other techniques, the ink covering information can react with certain solvents, so that any attempt to detach the layer is easily identified.

Intermediate document WO 005080A describes a series of optional methods including the presence a thermochromic layer, to avoid fraud. This document, however, does not, in particular, provide for the combination of several layers with optical effects individuals.

There are many examples of implementation application of the principles set out above. Unfortunately, practice still shows fraudulent manipulation: The skill implemented has was sufficient to give the impression that the document is free from scratching. It results well obviously for the sender of the document the disclosure theoretically confidential information, or, in the lotteries, a financial loss added to an effect disastrous on the credibility of the games concerned.

An object of the invention is to obtain documents to scratch-off layer in which the hidden information is safe from fraud, notably due to scratching and of the fraudulent reconstruction of the masking layer this information, overlay or peel and redeposition of that layer.

Another object of the invention is to obtain more scratch-resistant documents elaborate than that of a simple printed image even complicated, and whose visual effect is remarkable.

Another object of the invention is that the control can be done at any time in the chain distribution, without the documents themselves affected.

The object of the invention is a printed document carrying information of the confidential type masked by a removable opaque layer, the outer face of which comprises a layer containing pigments reacting by a reversible change in color to a variation in temperature hereinafter called "thermochromic layer",
wherein the pigments are arranged in the opaque scrapable layer itself and / or the pigments are dispersed in a separate layer affixed on the external face of the opaque scrapable layer, the document comprising an external layer superimposed on the thermochromic layer.

Optionally, one of the layers covering confidential information includes pigments having a variable optical effect depending on the surrounding conditions.

This variable optical effect depends, for example, on the angle from which an observer looks at the document.

This variable optical effect can be obtained by a iridescent ink, or by a reactive ink reversible to ultraviolet radiation.

Advantageously, this variable optical effect is obtained by affixing a holographic layer.

De façon avantageuse, la température à laquelle se produit ce changement est voisine de celle de l'épiderme, soit environ 25°C.Advantageously, the temperature at which produces this change is close to that of the epidermis, about 25 ° C.

  • apposition sur un support d'une information de type confidentiel;
  • apposition sur au moins une partie de cette information d'une couche protectrice;
  • dispersion dans une couche d'une encre contenant des pigments réagissant par un changement de couleur réversible à une variation de la température;
  • apposition sur au moins une partie de la couche protectrice d'une couche opaque grattable ;
The subject of the invention is also a method of manufacturing a document as described above which comprises the following operations:
  • affixing confidential information;
  • affixing a protective layer to at least part of this information;
  • dispersion in a layer of an ink containing pigments reacting by a reversible color change to a change in temperature;
  • affixing on at least part of the protective layer with a removable opaque layer;
  • affixing of the layer containing said pigments. The opaque scrapable layer and the thermochromic layer can be confused.
  • superimposition of a printed outer layer.

This method can, moreover, comprise the following operation:
  • dispersion in the outer layer of an ink having a variable optical effect depending on the surrounding conditions.

The thermochromic layer can be applied by serigraphy or by flexography. It can also be a transferable layer.

Other features and advantages of the invention emerge from the description below of a form of particular realization, reference being made to annexed drawings in which:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view with tearing of a document according to the invention.

The document includes a support 1 on which is carried printed information 2 (usually a series of figures, figures, icons, etc.).

This information 2 is in principle impossible to decipher without at least partially destroying a layer which conceals it from sight or any other means of reading (photography, photocopier, etc.).

Information 2 is covered with a layer protective 3, which separates it from an opaque layer 4, which has mechanical characteristics and physical such that it can only be removed by a deliberate scratching. This opaque layer 4 is itself covered with a layer 5 containing an ink thermochromic. As shown in Fig. 1, this layer 5 is covered by an outer layer 6, which can be decorative function.

A classic method for fraudsters is to take note of the information sought in locally destroying the scrapable layer in a series of strategic points (global information being extracted both by interpolation and by extrapolation) then to mask surfaces - which, depending on their skill; can be extremely reduced - destroyed by their intervention.

With conventional documents, if the fraudster is dexterous, he can mask practically undetected places altered. Quite paradoxically, plus the patterns covering the scrapable layer are complicated, the easier it will be, according to discontinuities in the module or in the lines, make up his intervention. Conversely, very simple can be hidden by flat.

All known protections therefore act as "passive" protections.

The document according to the invention acts, on the contrary, as "active" protection due to the presence of patterns made with thermochromic pigments. The peculiarity of these pigments is to react quickly by visible color changes to a variation of the temperature.

In this case, the legitimate recipient suffices of the document exposing it to a change in temperature: if the entire surface of the document or pattern has a matching color shift, it can conclude that the confidentiality of the information that is intended has been respected. If, on the contrary, localized areas or points retain their color original, even show a discordant variation, it must infer from this that the document has been forged.

No complex instrument is needed to proceed with this verification: just put the document in contact with the skin, for example in y affixing a finger.

If the falsified areas retain their color or your original, we can deduce that the document was falsified using conventional pigments, which do not not react to a change in temperature.

The presence (a priori improbable) of zones falsified with discordant variation would indicate that the fraudster, despite their high cost and their restricted distribution, was able to obtain thermochromic pigments.

However, the variety of characteristics that one can impose on these pigments (in particular by mixing) brings back to a practically zero probability rate the concordance of colors with those of a series of determined impressions.

As this variation in color is reversible, it is possible to carry out non-destructive checks, point or large-scale, at any point of the distribution chain, the documents checked retaining all their integrity.

As shown in Fig. 1, the thermochromic layer 5 can itself be covered with a layer of overprint 6, consisting for example of a guilloche difficult to reconstitute after alteration. This overprinting is generally done in offset.

On notera que la présence d'une couche de surimpression 6 n'est pas fondamentale, mais qu'elle permet néanmoins de produire des effets croisés intéressants en association avec- la couche thermochrome 5.Note that the presence of a layer of overprint 6 is not fundamental but that it nevertheless allows to produce cross effects interesting in combination with- the thermochromic layer 5.

According to a first printing process, the layer scratchable 4 is applied by screen printing.

The polyester gauze used for this process must have a mesh length of at least 50 µm, and th preferably between 60 and 80 µm.

On emploiera donc en principe une soie de 77 à 100 fils/cm.We therefore use in principle a silk of 77 to 100 son / cm.

In this process, inks can be used. variable optical properties OVI SICPA (producing including a variation from gold to green).

You can also use transparent inks iridescent (going from purple to green), semi-transparent inks two-tone (for example going from blue to green) or semi-opaque iridescent inks (from gold beige). All of these inks produce a variation of color according to their angle of observation.

These inks change usually colored in intervals of 25, 30 and 47 ° C (we can quote for example blue inks whose color change threshold is set at 20 ° C).

Photochromic inks can be used to make the other layers: these have a color change after being exposed to UV radiation (in particular, at a wavelength of 350-370 nm at a rate of 3 mW / cm 2 ) . A few seconds are enough to produce such a color change, which persists for several minutes.

In another embodiment, use is made to a flexographic printing process. Flexography is a form of lithography in which the plate is flexible. One can use for example a plate in Nyloflex FA (BASF®). To be able to transfer enough ink (so as to obtain a uniform distribution), can press several superimposed layers. This process applies to both variable inks and thermochromic or photochromic inks described above.

It is also possible to apply the coat scratcher described above using a hot or cold transfer.

A transfer machine, such as the machine Gietz® allows to transfer a layer 5,6, by a combination of pressure and heat, on the layer removable 4.

A pressure of the order of 200 kg / cm 2 and a temperature of approximately 125 ° C. are used. The transfer speed does not exceed a rate of 3600 documents per hour. The plates used are made of steel; the sheet used is, for example, a single sheet of gold or silver.

According to a variant not shown in FIG. 1 thermochromic pigments are dispersed in the layer scratchable 4 itself, not in a layer 5 separate.

The amount of pigments, in this case, is obviously more important since the layer is thicker and that colors should appear despite the charge opaque.
