  1. A hair styling appliance (1, 30) with a handle portion (6, 31, 53), a heating portion (8, 55) having a preferably arcuate heating zone (21) for heating and styling, in particular curls or waves of hair, and a cooling portion (10, 42, 56) having a cooling zone (24) for cooling the styled hair, characterized in that the difference in temperature between the surface temperatures of the heating zone (21) and the cooling zone (24) amounts to at least 80 Kelvin, more particularly, 100 Kelvin.
  2. The hair styling appliance as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the heating and cooling portions (8, 55; 10, 42, 56) combine to provide a styling member (7, 32, 38, 54) for hair treatment, said styling member essentially having a circular, elliptical, or similar cross-sectional surface and said heating and cooling portions (8, 55; 10, 42, 56) having a substantially equal, for example, semicircular cross-sectional surface.
  3. The hair styling appliance as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the clamp (9, 33, 39, 57) is movably attached to the handle portion (6, 31, 53) or the heating portion (8, 55), said clamp in particular having one end thereof coupled by a pivot to the handle portion (6, 31, 53) or the heating portion (8, 55) and being urged by a spring element (12) against the heating zone (21) of the heating portion (8, 55), or said clamp (9, 33, 39, 57) being spaced from the heating portion (8, 55) by a substantially uniform gap (22) when in its inactive position.
  7. The hair styling appliance as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the clamp (9, 33, 39, 57) is made of a heat-conducting material and is indirectly heatable by the heating portion (8, 55).
  8. The hair styling appliance as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the heating portion (8, 55) comprises a body made of a material providing good thermal conductivity, for example, metal, or a similar material, whose surface temperature at least in the area of the heating zone (21) exceeds 120°C, preferably amounting to about 145°C.
  9. The hair styling appliance as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the heating portion (8, 55) includes an electric heating element, for example, a PTC element (20), an electric heating spiral, or a similar element, or alternatively a gas heating device, for example, a heating device with catalytic combustion.
  10. The hair styling appliance as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the cooling portion (10, 42, 56) comprises a body made of metal, such as aluminum, or also plastics, or that the cooling portion (10, 42, 56) has a heat-conducting coating and/or cooling ribs.
  11. The hair styling appliance as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the cooling portion (10, 42, 56) comprises a cooling body that can be cooled actively, for example, by cooling air, a Peltier element, or a similar element.

  18. The hair styling appliance as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the ribs (35, 36...) extend substantially radially away from the main axis (18, 37, 62) of the appliance (1, 30).
  19. The hair styling appliance as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the appliance (1, 30), particularly the handle portion (6, 31, 53), has a substantially elliptical, oval, or similar outside contour in a plane that is perpendicular to its main axis (18, 37, 62).

The method as claimed in claim 21 or 23, characterized by the steps of inserting the hair (64) in a clamping area between a pressing element, such as a hair retaining clamp (9), and the heating portion (8), applying a clamping force to the hair (64) being styled, and pulling the heated hair through the clamping area and subsequently along the cooling zone (24).
  25. The method as claimed in any one of claims 21 to 24, characterized in that the direction of movement of the hair (64) behind the heating zone (21) is equal to the direction of movement in the heating zone (21).
  26. The method as claimed in any one of claims 21 to 25, characterized in that the relative speed between the hair styling appliance (1) and the hair (64) is variable.
  27. The method as claimed in any one of claims 21 to 26, characterized by the step of curling straight hair.
  28. The method as claimed in any one of claims 21 to 26, characterized by the step of straightening curled hair.
  29. The method as claimed in any one of claims 21 to 28, characterized by the steps of inserting the hair (64) particularly close to the hair roots in the clamping area between the heating portion (8) and the hair retaining clamp (9), turning the hair styling appliance about its main axis (18) by roughly 120° to 180° so that the hair engages the heating zone (21) and, at least in areas, the cooling zone (24) of the cooling portion (10), and subsequently moving the hair styling appliance (1) away from the head of a user so that the heated and styled hair (64) is cooled at the cooling zone (24) of the cooling portion (10), with the temperature difference between the surface temperatures of the heating zone (21) and the cooling zone (24) amounting to at least 80 Kelvin, more particularly, 100 Kelvin.
