Definitions
- the present invention relates to a low voltage connector and more particularly a low voltage connector belonging to a specific category referred to as category 7 with low crosstalk levels due to insulation of the pins arranged in pairs.
- this type of low voltage connector includes a generally metallic or metallized body defining compartments electromagnetically isolated in which the connector pins are arranged in pairs so that there is practically no inductive coupling between the different pairs of pins. It is therefore a type of low voltage connector particularly suitable for high speeds as opposed to an RJ 45 connector which has much lower performance crosstalk characteristics.
- each pin includes an area of suitable contact to come into electrical contact with the pins of another connector on the same type and a connection area which is normally suitable for receiving a lead wire of a pair constituting an eight-wire cord.
- the means of connection are in the form of insulation displacement contacts defining a slot in which the individual conductive wires are inserted so as to incise their sheath protective to the soul.
- such a low voltage connector can be associated with a other connector of the same type: this is indeed possible due to the character hermaphrodite of this type of low voltage connector.
- the rear part of the connector presenting the contacts insulation displacement is suitable for wiring a cord of four pairs of conductive wires while the front part is suitable for plugging in a connector of the same type.
- This particular type of low voltage connector (category 7) can be used in distribution cabinets, for example integrated in rack strips, or inside an electronic device, mounted on a printed circuit.
- the connector to be mounted in a rack strip and the connector to be mounted in a electronic device on a printed circuit is not exactly of the same type, and require specific tools which entail an additional cost. Indeed, a specific set of tools required for connecting the connection cables in the case of a connector installed in a rack strip and other specific tools is necessary for mounting on a printed circuit.
- this side of the connector is specially adapted for receiving pairs of wires from a wiring cord and not that of a connector of a totally different type.
- the present invention aims to overcome these drawbacks of the prior art by defining a low voltage connector allowing connection on its rear part another type of connector (RJ 45 or BNC) or others or the direct mounting of the connector on a printed circuit board.
- the present invention provides a low voltage connector comprising a plurality of pins arranged in pairs, each pin comprising, on the front of the connector, a contact zone adapted to come into electrical contact during the insertion of an associated connector and, on the rear of the connector, a zone of connection normally suitable for establishing an electrical connection with a wire respective conductor, an adapter with cooperating connection means, instead of said conductive wires, with the connection areas of the pins and of means for contact adapted to come into electrical contact with an added component, said zones of connection comprising insulation displacement contacts with slits and the means of adapter connection include pins inserted into contact slots self-stripping.
- the insulation displacement contacts with slits are directly accessible from the rear of the connector and oriented so that the pins come insert into the slots of the insulation displacement contacts by a translational movement plug-in.
- the adapter is simply plugged into the contact slots insulation displacement, which is not possible with an RJ 45 type plug where the connection electrical wiring requires opening of the plug.
- the adapter When the connector is intended to be fixed directly on a circuit board printed, the adapter may include studs cooperating directly with holes contacts provided in the printed circuit.
- the printed circuit therefore constitutes the add-on component so that the connector can be mounted on the printed circuit of an electronic device through the adapter.
- the adapter can integrate a printed circuit part which then defines the contact means intended to come into electrical contact with a RJ 45 or BNC or other type connector.
- the pins can each be formed with a stud inserted in a respective contact hole formed in a printed circuit defining the means of contact.
- the present invention also relates to an adapter as defined above advantageously having fixing means making it possible to mount it on the low voltage connector.
- the low voltage connector on which the adapter according to the invention is mounted is designated as a whole by the reference numeral 1. It is, as mentioned above, of a low voltage connector of a particular type comprising a housing 10 which is generally metallic or metallized which is subdivided into four compartments for each to receive a pair of pins, making a total of eight pins for the connector. Each pair of pins is held in its particular compartment by a core which is made of a plastic material. This core is not shown in the drawings.
- the pins extend through the housing 10 of connector 1 so as to define an input and an output of the connector. On the side input, which is clearly visible in fig 2, the pins designated by the references digital 11 define a connection end part for example made in the form of insulation displacement contacts 13.
- These insulation displacement contacts 13 are intended for the reception of the pairs of wires of a low voltage cable (not shown).
- Each wire of the cable is individually inserted through the slot of its contact respective insulation stripping so as to cut its protective sheath to the core and thus define an electrical contact.
- the four pairs of wires forming the low voltage cable are inserted through a work piece spatial organizer allowing each individual wire to be brought into the sound slot respective insulation displacement contact. Then just press or push the part spatial organization in connector 1 so as to establish contact between the eight wires simultaneously with the connector pins.
- the connector On the output side, the connector defines two stages of contacts 15 which include each four pins 11. At this level, the pins define a contact area intended to come into electrical contact with a connector of the same type.
- the associated connector can also be a male connector of the type hermaphrodite.
- the four pairs of pins 11 are arranged in two planes each comprising two pairs defining one side of the contacts self-stripping for conductive wires and on the other side contact areas for a associated connector.
- the adapter according to the invention which has been designated by the reference numeral 2 on the drawings cooperate with the connector 1 on its input side, that is to say on the side of the insulation displacement contacts 13 in place of the conducting wires of the low voltage cable (not shown).
- the adapter 2 is substantially identical in the modes of embodiment 1 and 2 shown in FIGS. 1 and 2.
- the adapter comprises a body 20 generally of molded plastic material, eight pins 21 arranged in a spatial geometry identical to that of the contacts insulation displacement 13 of pins 11 of connector 1, and a printed circuit board 23.
- Figure 2 which is an exploded view, also of the adapter 2, it can be seen that the body 20 of the adapter 2 is produced on its rear face with a housing 202 suitable for receiving the printed circuit board 23.
- the bottom of the housing 202 is pierced with eight openings 203.
- the pins 21 are made with heads 22 whose dimension is suitable for passing through the openings 203 made in the bottom of the housing 202 of the body 20 of the adapter 2.
- the printed circuit board 23 is also formed with connection holes 231 whose dimensions are adapted to receive the heads 22 of pins 21 with a squeezing contact so that the heads 22 of pins 21 are held inside the contact holes 231 of the circuit board printed 23 while holding the body 20 between them.
- the circuit board printed 23 is provided with eight contact zones (not shown) which connect eight heads 22 of pins 21 respectively via conductive tracks extending in the printed circuit 23. These eight contact zones (not shown) are intended to come into electrical contact with eight respective pins 31 forming part a female connector 3 of the RJ 45 type.
- the female connector RJ 45 3 comprises means for cooperating with the connector 1 so as to apply the end of the contact pins 31 on the contact areas of the printed circuit 23. It it is therefore possible to insert a male connector of type RJ 45 4 into the housing correspondent formed in the female connector RJ 45 3.
- the adapter 2 it is possible thanks to the adapter 2 according to the invention to connect a male connector of the RJ 45 4 type to the low voltage connector 1 of category 7 thanks to the adapter 2.
- the mounting of the adapter 2 on the connector 1 is extremely simple being given that the spatial arrangement of the pins 21 is identical to that of the contacts insulation displacement 13 of pins 11 of connector 1. So, by simply plugging in the adapter 2 in the connector 1 on the side of the insulation displacement contacts, the pins 21 automatically insert into the insulation displacement contacts 13 of the pins 11 which establishes the electrical contact (see enlarged detail in Figure 2b).
- the attachment of the adapter 2 on the connector 1 can for example be made by snap-fastening using snap-on studs 201 which cooperate with a corresponding profile of the housing 10 of the connector 1.
- FIGs 3a and 3b represent the third form for producing the adapter according to the invention.
- the adapter simply comprises a body 20 on which are mounted eight pins of connection 21 provided with plug-in heads 22 intended to be inserted into holes plug 71 made on the printed circuit board 7.
- Attaching the adapter 2 on connector 1 can be made (as in figure 2) by snap-fastening 201 coming to cooperate with a profile corresponding to the housing 10 of the connector 1.
- connector 1 is fully integrated inside the electronic device and these contact zones 12 are accessible through a port formed in the wall 8 of the device which can advantageously be provided with a support 81 making it possible to maintain connector 1 in position inside the device.
- We can then come and connect to using a connector 6 of the same type, advantageously hermaphrodite.
- the spirit of the invention resides in the fact of being able to connect a connector low voltage for example of category 7 to a connector of another category or on a printed circuit board using an adapter installed instead of wires connecting cable conductors, said adapter using a circuit board printed to make the connection.
