Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for operating a Printer or copier, in which a first electrographic Printing unit, which has an image pattern on a sheet Material prints sheet-like over an input section Material is fed one after the other, and in which the printed material one by one via an output section is issued.
- a printer is known from US Pat. No. 4,587,532 arranged on top of each other has three printing units that together or alternately print single sheets.
- the paper feeder contains switches to the single sheets the different To supply printing units.
- DE 34 22 942 A1 describes a printing system which owns two electrophotographic printing stations. at If a fault occurs in a printing station, the relevant printing station switched off, the other Printing station continues its operation.
- WO 91/13386 describes a modular structure electrophotographic printing device known, which two Contains printing modules.
- the print modules can be operated in simplex mode work, with both printing modules single sheets over switches be fed. Duplex operation is also possible with which the single sheets first to the one printing module Printing can be supplied with a first printed image; then another can be made by the second printing module Print image can be applied.
- the print modules are as separate units for mounting in a single housing designed.
- DE 34 07 847 A1 is an image recording device described with multiple functions. It's the functions such as. High-speed recording, two-sided recording and multiplex recording possible.
- the Printer system contains two printing units, one over the other Paper guide system are interconnectable.
- the Paper guide system also allows turning Cut sheets so that a duplex printing with both Sides is possible.
- US 4,972,236 also describes an imaging system with multiple printing units that vertical to save space are arranged one above the other.
- the paper transports for both printing units by one Connection channel connected to each other.
- a printing system which in contains essentially similarly constructed printing units. Each a separate input section is assigned to the printing units, over the sheet material fed to the respective printing unit becomes. If one of the printing units fails, for example at a paper jam within the transfer area of a printing unit, the second printing unit must be removed from the associated paper input tray to be served.
- the disadvantage of this arrangement is that two input compartments must be provided in order to The device is ready for operation in the event of a printing unit failure to be able to maintain. For example, the lower one falls Printing unit out due to a paper jam and is in the upper one Printing unit the associated input tray empty, then the Print layout completely.
- two become essential similarly designed printing units are used.
- the components for these printing units e.g. the electronic control, the developer units, the toner supply and discharge devices etc., can be kept almost unchanged become. So each printing unit on its own has a very special one high operational reliability.
- Both printing units use one common input section over which the sheet material is fed. Likewise, both printing units use together an output section for discharging the printed sheet Material. - the input section 28 single sheets are fed by the first switch W1 fed to the first transfer printing transport path 44 (Arrow P13).
- the respective single sheet After printing by the printing unit D1 the respective single sheet a turning distance according to the arrow P14 conveyed beyond the turnout W2. This turning range is part of the discharge channel 52.
- the conveying direction reversed according to arrow P15, and the switch W2 conducts then the single sheet according to arrow P16 in the connection channel 48.
- the single sheet is then in the turnout W3 Direction of arrow P17 to the second transfer printing path 46 diverted.
- the printing unit D2 is therefore not yet printed Back of the single sheet fed for printing.
- the switch W2 works as a turning device, around the printing unit D2 the back of the single sheet supply.
- the turnout W3 can also be used be used.
- the single sheet leaving the printing unit D1 is then on the switch W2, the connecting channel 48th the turnout W3 and then for a short turning distance the feed channel 50 in the direction of the switch W1.
- the transport direction is reversed and the switch W3 directs the single sheet in the direction of the printing unit D2 with its back up.
- FIG. 6 schematically shows a further operating mode, the two-color simplex printing, where the front of a single sheet printed with two image samples of different colors becomes.
- the two printing units D1, D2 print different image patterns Colour.
- two-color simplex printing the single sheet is turned over to the switch W1 Printing unit D1 fed (arrow P25). Then that will Single sheet over the switch W2 the connecting channel 48 without Turn and then fed to the printing unit D2 via the switch W3 (Arrows P26, P27).
- the printing unit D2 prints the front with a different color from the printing unit D1 Colour. Then the single sheet is on the switch W4 output to paper output 30 (arrow P28).
- Figure 7 shows schematically the transport path of a single sheet in the two-color duplex printing mode, in which the Front and back of a single sheet with picture patterns different colors can be printed. requirement for this is that the printing units D1 and D2 have different colors Print images.
- Arrows P25, P26, P27 and P28 illustrate the transport route. Then the cut sheet again fed to the printing unit D1.
- the arrows P29 up to P36 illustrate the transport path of the single sheet for printing on the back. So that this back of the printing unit D1 is fed must on the transport route between the Printing unit D2 and printing unit D1 turned the single sheet become. This turning can e.g. on the turnout W4, the turnout W2 or the switch W3.
- turning with the turnout W4 i.e. the single sheet is initially for a short turning distance towards the Soft W5 transported, then the transport direction reversed and conveyed the single sheet in the direction of the switch W2.
- the transport direction reversed and conveyed the single sheet in the direction of the switch W2.
- After transport into the paper output 30 according to the Arrow P36 is followed by further turnouts W5 and then the right-sided filing of the double-sided with two color images each of a printed single sheet.
- Two-color duplex printing can be done in the following manner.
- the cut sheet is fed from the input section 28 the switch W1 fed to the printing unit D1, its front printed and then over turnouts W2 and W3 headed briefly towards the turnout W1.
- After passing the switch W3 becomes the transport direction in the direction Printing unit D2 changed and the single sheet on the transfer printing transport route 46 funded.
- the switch W3 thus serves as a turning station.
- the back of the Single sheet printed.
- the single sheet is over the Switches W4, W2, W3 and W1 again fed to the first printing unit D1, to now print on the back.
- the single sheet must be used for this.
- switch W4 being conveyed briefly towards switch W5, the direction of transport reversed and in the direction of turnout W2 Condition is transported.
- the switches W2 and W3 fed to the printing unit D2 it is turned. Now the front side of the printing unit D2 printed. Then the single sheet over the switch W4 led to storage compartments 32 to 36. Now that it's in the correct position, i.e. upside down in the tray 30 arrives, it does not have to be turned through the turnout W5 again become.
- the duplex printing mode with printing on the front and the back of the cut sheets can fail if one Printing unit D1 or D2 a restricted duplex printing operation be maintained. If e.g. with a duplex operation (see FIG. 5) the upper, second printing unit D2 fails, see above this is switched off. The single sheets will continue fed to the printing unit D1 via the switch W1. After that the single sheets over the second switch W2 towards the fourth Turnout W4 transported (arrow P14). After passing the second switch W2 becomes the transport direction (arrow P15) vice versa, and the single sheets over the third switch W3 and the first switch W1 again fed to the first printing unit D1. Due to the turning process by reversing the transport direction at the turnout W2 the back is now through printed the first printing unit D1. Then the leaf-shaped Material about the second switch W2 and the fourth Turnout W4 issued again.
- the first printing unit D1 is faulty and the second printing unit D2 is still fully functional, so you can use the transport routes 46, 52 and 48 a duplex operation with the second printing unit D2 are maintained.
- the single sheets become the second printing unit via switches W1 and W3 D2 fed.
- the printed single sheets are over the Turnout W4 for a short section towards the turnout W5 led.
- the transport direction is reversed and the respective one Single sheet guided in the direction of the switch W2.
- the single sheet over the Connection channel 48 and the switch W3 the printing unit D2 again fed and now printed the back.

Aus der DE 34 07 847 A1 ist eine Bildaufzeichnungsvorrichtung
mit Mehrfachfunktionen beschrieben. Es sind die Funktionen,
wie z.B. Hochgeschwindigkeitsaufzeichnung, Zwei-Seiten-Aufzeichnung

From US 5,150,167 A a printing system is known which in contains essentially similarly constructed printing units. Each a separate input section is assigned to the printing units, over the sheet material fed to the respective printing unit becomes. If one of the printing units fails, for example at a paper jam within the transfer area of a printing unit, the second printing unit must be removed from the associated paper input tray to be served. The disadvantage of this arrangement is that two input compartments must be provided in order to The device is ready for operation in the event of a printing unit failure to be able to maintain. From US 4,591,884 A and from US 5,208,640 A are one A large number of printing unit variants are known. A multifunctional arrangement, such that both a simplex mode with high throughput as well Duplex mode in which two printing units are used and an emergency operating mode if one of the two printing units fails is possible, but are not provided here.
It is an object of the invention to provide a method for operating a printer or copier that has a high Printing performance or copying performance enabled and reliable is working.
This object is solved by the features of claim 1. Advantageous further developments are in the further claims specified.
In the method according to the invention two become essential similarly designed printing units are used. The components for these printing units, e.g. the electronic control, the developer units, the toner supply and discharge devices etc., can be kept almost unchanged become. So each printing unit on its own has a very special one high operational reliability. Both printing units use one common input section over which the sheet material is fed. Likewise, both printing units use together an output section for discharging the printed sheet Material. This makes the new device: very compact built and can be produced with little effort. Because of the two printing units, the printing performance is clear elevated.
According to the invention, when the first printing unit or if the second printing unit is faulty, the faulty printing unit switched off, the first switch only leaf-shaped Feeds material to the undisturbed printing unit. With the help of A print shop that is not disturbed can therefore still operate be maintained so that print jobs by Arrival of the repair service can be processed.
In so-called simplex operation, in that in undisturbed operation the input section sheet material with double Transfer printing speed can be supplied in the event of a fault Printing unit feeding only at half speed compared to normal operation. Nevertheless is at given this variant of the invention a considerable advantage since the user of the printing system continues to work with reduced performance can.
Also in duplex mode, with the single sheets on both sides printing can continue if a printing unit fails become. The conveyor path in printing will then be like this set that the undisturbed printing unit first one page printed, then the single sheets are turned over and again same printing unit to be fed to the second page print.
If one assumes a function probability of e.g. 90% for each printing unit, the formula increases according to this formula Functionality probability for a redundant restricted Operation at 99%. As mentioned, the Reduced printing performance in the event of a printing unit failing total failure of the printing system or copier system will, however with a very high probability avoided what for High security for the execution of his orders means.
One embodiment of the invention provides that the input section a switch that contains sheet-like material either the first transfer printing route or the second Transfer printing transport route feeds. In this embodiment the simplex printing mode is implemented with one color, i.e. supplied sheet material, e.g. Cut sheets Paper is from the first printing unit or from the second printing unit printed on one side. In the case of further training, the Soft sheet material alternating the first transfer printing route and the second transfer printing transport path. Because every The sheet-like printing unit with the same transfer printing speed Material printed and two printing units arranged in parallel are, the overall printing performance doubles Device. Single sheets with double Printing speed fed and removed again.
Another exemplary embodiment provides that the first transfer printing transport route and through the second transfer printing path a connecting channel are connected, through which leaf-shaped Material in one or both transport directions is eligible. These measures can cause printed material from the first printing unit to the second printing unit and from the second Printing unit to be fed to the first printing unit to it print. A return is therefore through the connecting channel created which the two printing units together connects, which enables diverse printing processes.
Another embodiment provides that the leaf-shaped Material during transport from the first transfer printing path to second transfer printing transport path is turned. In this way can each printing unit the front and also the back printing on a single sheet. If for the two printing units Developer stations with different colors used so there can be two on each side of the single sheet Image patterns can be printed with two different colors, i.e. it can do a so-called two-color duplex operation, too Called duplex color spot operation.
Despite technical improvements to the printing units Damage and failures are never completely excluded, as such partly due to incorrect applications or operating errors caused. Now about the downtime of such Shortening the printing system is used by the various device manufacturers a very high performance printer and copier fast-responding service operation with on-call service to chat. The effort for this service operation is very high high. In the present invention, it is now possible to use the Overall failure probability of operating such devices significantly reduce.

Weiterhin
ist es möglich, gleichartige Steuerungen zu verwenden. In the so-called operating mode "alternating simplex printing"

Figur 5 zeigt schematisch den Duplex-Druckbetrieb, bei dem
die Einzelblätter beidseitig bedruckt werden. Die dem Eingabeabschnitt
28 zugeführten Einzelblätter werden durch die
erste Weiche W1 dem ersten Umdruck-Transportweg 44 zugeführt
(Pfeil P13).
Pfeil P19 transportiert.
Figure 5 shows schematically the duplex printing operation in which

Then the cut sheet again fed to the printing unit D1. The arrows P29 up to P36 illustrate the transport path of the single sheet for printing on the back. So that this back of the printing unit D1 is fed must on the transport route between the Printing unit D2 and printing unit D1 turned the single sheet become. This turning can e.g. on the turnout W4, the turnout W2 or the switch W3.
jeweils zwei Farbbildern bedruckten Einzelblattes. In a preferred embodiment of the invention

Einzelblattes bedruckt. Danach wird das Einzelblatt über die
Weichen W4, W2, W3 und W1 erneut dem ersten Druckwerk D1 zugeführt,
um nunmehr die Rückseite zu bedrucken. Das Einzelblatt
muß hierzu gewendet werden. Dies erfolgt an Weiche W4,
An alternative transport of the single sheet through the

Also in the duplex printing mode with printing on the front and the back of the cut sheets can fail if one Printing unit D1 or D2 a restricted duplex printing operation be maintained. If e.g. with a duplex operation (see FIG.

If the first printing unit D1 is faulty and the second printing unit
