Abstract

An attachment collar (10) for sealing attachment of a roof-penetrating building structure in a roof, in particular a frame (1) of a skylight, to an exterior weather-shielding membrane (7) in an underroof structure, comprises mutually connected attachment members (11 - 14), each being provided with an interior edge flange (16) for fastening to a side face of the roof-penetrating building structure and an exterior side edge (20) in abutment against said underroof membrane (7). The attachment members (11 - 14) are made as flexible, substantially nonelastic lengths of material, and side attachment members (12, 14) intended for positioning transversely to battens (9) in the roof structure are manufactured with material surplus, e.g. by pleating or folding, in a direction parallel with said interior edge flange and exterior side edge (16, 20).

Description

  • The present invention relates to an attachment collar for sealing attachment of a roof-penetrating building structure in a roof, in particular a frame of a skylight, to an exterior weather-shielding membrane in an underroof structure, comprising mutually connected attachment members made from flexible, substantially nonelastic lengths of material and each provided with an interior edge flange for fastening to a side face of the roof-penetrating building structure and an exterior side edge in abutment against said underroof membrane.
  • Such attachment collars which provide a watertight connection between the roof-penetrating building structure and the exterior membrane in an underroof structure, is for instance known from DE-A-34 42 276 and WO 94/08108 and are usually made with attachment members having an interior edge flange for connection with the exterior sides of the roof-penetrating building structure in connection with a collar member extending in the roof plane, said collar member being positioned in tight connection with the exterior underroof membrane.
  • In the embodiment known from WO -A- 94/08108 the attachment collar is intended for positioning in connection with an underroof membrane of plastic film and is made from the same material.
  • A prerequisite for the mounting of such known attachment collars in established roof structures is normally that a part of the batten arrangement carrying the exterior roofing which corresponds to the extension of the collar in the roof pitch plane is removed during the mounting and replaced when the attachment collar has been positioned in connection with the roof-penetrating building structure and the exterior underroof membrane, a fact which to a considerably degree makes the mounting complicated and more expensive.
  • The main object of the invention is to provide an attachment collar of the type stated which can be mounted without removal of battens around the roof-penetrating building structure itself.
  • To meet this object the attachment collar according to the invention is characterized in that side attachment members intended for positioning transversely to battens in the roof structure are made with a surplus of material in a direction parallel to said interior and exterior side edge.
  • Due to the making of the lengths of material to be positioned transversely to the battens with a suitable material surplus, which may typically amount to 50 - 150%, preferably approx. 100%, the attachment collar can be positioned such that it extends across the battens.
  • If desired, also the attachment members of the collar which are to be placed substantially parallel to the battens can be made with a similar material surplus.
  • In a preferred embodiment of the attachment collar said material surplus has been obtained thereby that the lengths of material in said attachment members are pleated or folded in comparatively closely packed folds with fold lines substantially perpendicular to said interior and exterior side edge.
  • The attachment collar according to the invention may be made of any suitable, flexible, waterproof sheet material or length of material. Suitable materials are e.g. polyolefine based plastic materials.
  • The attachment collar according to the invention is suitable for use in connection with commercially available underroof structures with exterior membrane of plastic film, roofing felt or other suitable underroof materials.
  • For use in connection with skylights with a rectangular frame structure having sides parallel and perpendicular, respectively, to the pitch of the roof an advantageous embodiment of the attachment collar according to the invention is characterized in that a length of material is connected to the exterior side edge of an attachment member to be secured to a top member of the frame structure perpendicular to the pitch of the roof, said length of material overlapping the attachment member in question and being bendable for the formation of a valley.
  • In this manner the positioning of a separate valley member may be dispensed with.
  • The invention is explained in detail in the following with reference to the schematic drawing, in which
  • Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a part of a pitched roof structure with a roof-penetrating building structure in the form of a frame for a skylight window,
  • Figs 2 and 3 show the roof structure according to Fig. 1 during and after mounting of an embodiment of an attachment collar according to the invention, and
  • Fig. 4 is a profile section of the side members of the attachment collar seen in the direction of the arrow IV in Fig. 2.
  • In the roof structure shown in Fig. 1, the frame 1 of a skylight window is placed between two rafters 2. An underroof structure positioned substantially between the rafters 2 comprises an interior covering 3 of boards or panels, a vapour sealing layer 4 and an insulation layer 5, the upper side of which is positioned somewhat below the upper side of the rafters 2 to provide ventilation between the insulation layer 5 and an exterior covering 6 fastened to the upper side of the rafters 2, said exterior covering being for instance a layer of boards, on the exterior side of which the underroof ends with an exterior weather-shielding membrane 7 which, in a roof construction as shown, may typically be made from roofing felt.
  • On the upper side of the underroof structure shown an arrangement of counter battens 8 has been fastened, said counter battens extending parallel to the rafters 2, and battens 9 extending perpendicular to the rafters 2. This batten arrangement serves as support for the exterior roofing (not shown), which may typically be composed of tiles or slate. In the figure a part of the batten arrangement has been removed to elucidate the underroof structure.
  • For the attainment of a waterproof connection between the exterior side of the frame 1 and the exterior membrane 7 of the underroof structure a known attachment collar designed as stated above may be used, but the mounting of such an attachment collar, which is not shown in Fig. 1, would in an existing roof construction require removal of the battens from a section of the roof surface corresponding to the size of the attachment collar, and after the collar has been mounted, the battens removed have to be remounted.
  • According to the invention the above drawbacks are avoided by an attachment collar for instance as illustrated by the embodiment shown in Figs 2 and 3, in which the attachment collar is made from flexible, substantially nonelastic lengths of material. Attachment members or lengths of material which are intended for positioning transversely to the battens 9, i.e. in connection with the side members of the frame 1 extending in the direction of the pitch of the roof, have been made with a material surplus which makes it possible to position the attachment collar such that it may pass over the battens 9 but still be in such contact with the exterior underroof membrane 7 that a tight connection is established, the attachment collar being in a suitable manner, for instance by stapling, fastened to the batten members 9, over which it has to pass, and possibly also to the counter battens 8.
  • In the embodiment of Figs 2 and 3, the attachment collar 10 is composed of four attachment members 11, 12, 13 and 14 which are mutually connected in mitre joints 15, for instance by welding, for the formation of a full collar corresponding to the actual size of the frame 1, such that it may easily be arranged around the frame 1 with interiorly protruding flange members 16 of the individual attachment members in close contact with the exterior sides of the top, bottom and side members of the frame 1.
  • The attachment members 12 and 14, which are intended for being connected with the side members of the frame 1 parallel to the direction of the roof pitch, are made with a material surplus by pleating or folding the lengths of material, from which these attachment members are made, as will be more clearly seen from Fig. 4, in comparatively closely packed folds 17 with upper and lower foldings 18 and 19 substantially perpendicular to the exterior side edges 20 of the attachment members. The foldings are preferably made in such a way that the upper foldings 18, which at the mounting of the collar will be placed at the exterior, face downwards in the direction of the roof pitch.
  • The material surplus of said attachment members is defined as the ratio between the length of the material in unfolded condition and the length in folded condition and may typically amount to from 50 to 150%, for instance 100%. This may, as shown in Fig. 4, be obtained by making the folding or pleating in such a way that the total length of a full folding 17, measured between subsequent foldings 19, is twice as big as the distance a between the foldings. The number of foldings and the dimensions of the individual foldings may advantageously be adapted to conventional batten dimensions, for instance 25 foldings per running meter corresponding to a distance a between the foldings 18 of 4 cm.
  • In a building structure as shown i Fig. 1 and by use of an attachment collar known per se it will normally be necessary to mount a separate valley member above the top member of the frame 1 to ensure water drainage around the mounted skylight and its closest surroundings, whereas, contrary thereto, such a valley member 21, as shown with a dotted line in Fig. 2, may be made integral with the attachment collar 10 itself, a length of material being connected with the exterior side edge 22 of the attachment member 11, which length of material overlaps the attachment member 11 and is flexible or bendable for the formation of a valley below the exterior roofing.
  • From the perspective view in Fig. 3, in which the individual members of a roof structure are allocated the same reference numerals as in Fig. 1, appears how the attachment collar 10 is mounted with the attachment members 12, 14 passing over the battens 9.
  • The characteristic material surplus of the attachment members in the attachment collar according to the invention, which members are intended for connection with the frame side members, may also be made in another way than by folding or pleating, for instance by an undulating design with arbitrary wave profile.
  • The attachment collar according to the invention is not limited for use in connection with skylight windows, but may advantageously be used also in connection with other roof-penetrating building members, for instance chimneys, attics and the like. It is not of importance whether the attachment collar is made as for instance a welded full collar or not, even though this is in many cases preferable to facilitate the mounting. The collar may alternatively be made on the place of mounting by connecting prefabricated folded or unfolded members or members which are cut on location.
