Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method of connecting screens of multipair telecommunications cables to ensure their continuity or their grounding, as well as the equipment used to carry out this operation.
- Network telecommunication cables are most often made up of sets of two elementary copper wires or pairs, grouped in quarters, in quarter bundles and in bundle assemblies, protected by synthetic tape, then by a sealing barrier forming conductive screen, generally made of aluminum and finally by a polyethylene protective sheath. Note the presence of an extrusion copolymer insulating layer on the exterior surface of the aluminum screen.
- Network cables with a large diameter, beyond 20 mm, are generally kept under internal pressure, which entails the obligation to restore a perfect seal as soon as one intervenes on the external sheath. It is important to be able to electrically connect the screens at the level of the splice protections, but also to be able to ensure their grounding at the level of the end equipment or in full cable.
- Another known possibility consists in "sliding" between the cables and the screen of tinned needles with a diameter of 1.5 to 2.5 mm, the end of which has been made slippery by teflon or another process.
- the method according to the present invention aims to remedy this state of affairs. It makes it possible to create in the outer envelope of the cable, using a very easy handling tool, a window giving access to the conductive screen, and to easily realize, whether along a telecommunication cable or at its ends, extremely reliable connections of this screen, compact, with very low electrical contact resistance (some m ⁇ ), and having an excellent seal.
- the method consists in exposing the conductive screen by practicing, by means of a rubber grinding wheel, a window in the sheath enveloping the cable, then in placing in contact with said screen the base of a metal part comprising a threaded part on which are successively inserted pre-drilled elements consisting of an adhesive sealant in mastic, an insulating shell composed of a main element and precut elements making it possible to adapt the shell to the diameter of the cable, and finally a cable tie stainless steel, the threaded part of the metal part being arranged to receive an electrical connection terminal.
- FIG. 1 given by way of nonlimiting examples of embodiments of the subject of the present application:
- FIG. 1 represents a protective screen earthing connector mounted on a telecommunication cable
- the Figure 2 is an exploded view of the valve used for pressurized cables
- Figures 3, 4 and 5 respectively show the insulating shell, the clamp and the adhesive seal
- Figure 6 shows the threaded metal part used for the cables low non-pressurized section
- Figure 7 illustrates the use of a mini-drill with rubber grinding wheel to make windows in the cable envelope allowing access to the conductive screen located along the cable or at its ends .
- connection system Figures 1 to 5
- valve 1 of the type used for the inner tubes of tires, with seal 2, two tightening nuts 3 and plug 4 (FIG. 2),
- an insulating shell 7 composed of a main element 8 having the shape of a cylinder portion and intended to cover the opening made on the cable 9, and of precut elements 10 allowing the covering of the lower part of the latter, these pre-cut elements which are easily detached by folding and which make it possible to easily adapt the shell to the diameter of the cable (FIG. 3),
- connection terminal 12 with a grounding cable 13 possibly installed ( Figure 2).
- the adhesive seal 5, the main element 8 of the shell and the clamp 11 each have a hole 14 allowing the threaded part of the valve 1 to pass, but not its base 15.
- the method according to the invention consists in exposing the conductive screen by making a window 16 in the polyethylene sheath 17 enveloping the cable 9. After having made sure of the quality of the surface of the aluminum, the contact with the latter the flat bottom of the base 15 of the valve, and the adhesive thread 5 stripped of its protective papers 6, then the main element 8 of the shell 7, is successively threaded onto the threaded portion of the latter, and finally the clamp 11 after having detached the unnecessary precut elements 10. The connector is then in place, it only remains to fix the connection terminal 12 between the two nuts 3 of the valve 1 and to close the latter by means of the plug 4.
- the construction of the window 16 will advantageously be carried out by means of a tool constituted by a mini-drill 18 commercially at high rotational speed (up to 18,000 rpm), of the type generally used for aquettage.
- This drill is equipped with a grinding wheel 19 causing the polyethylene of the cable sheath 1 to heat up (FIG. 7).
- Grinding wheels made of rubber give excellent results. They cause sufficient heating to "file” the polyethylene and remove the extrusion copolymer without damaging the aluminum constituting the conductive screen. These wheels consist of a cylindrical or conical rubber block with a rounded tip mounted on a metal rod.
- grinding wheels made of felt make it possible to strip the envelope, but more difficult the layer of varnish covering the protective screen.
- the heating of the polyethylene is obtained by means of an electrical resistance inserted in a nozzle of dimensions equal to the window to be produced and maintained at approximately 1 cm from the envelope.
- a hard object such as a screwdriver.
- Valve 1 has a dual function. In addition to the connection of the conductive screen, it constitutes an air access intake allowing the control of the internal pressure of the pressurized cables as well as the air injection. It is obvious that the equipment described can be used in cases where only this second function is used without departing from the scope of the present invention.
- the insulating shell 7 and the adhesive seal 5 associated with its protective seal can be used for repairing a cable jacket 17.
- the cable envelope can be cut over a few centimeters or deteriorated over a few square centimeters.
- a variant of the invention longer (about 12 to 15 cm long) allows the repair of the envelope and the use of the cable with an internal pressure of 500 mb.
