Claims (10)

  1. Device for providing navigation assistance to a vehicle driver who is provided with instructions derived from a comparison between a route predefined by route reference points, and respectively determined positions of the vehicle, the route reference points and connections between the route reference points of at least part of the predefined route being represented schematically and the representations of the route reference points also containing symbols for roads which start from the route reference points and do not lie on the predefined route, characterized in that, in addition, routes and route reference points which lie on alternative routes are represented.
  2. Method according to Claim 1, characterized in that data which describe the predefined route and the route reference points are transmitted from a fixed computer to a vehicle unit located in the vehicle.
  3. Method according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the symbols are short lines which differ from the connections between the route reference points.
  4. Method according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that in addition a symbol is represented for the respectively determined position of the vehicle.
  5. Method according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that data relating to the traffic conditions are transmitted and are represented in the form of symbols assigned to the respective route reference points and/or the routes lying between the route reference points.
  6. Device for providing navigation assistance to a vehicle driver having a graphic display for outputting instructions which are derived from a comparison between a route predefined by route reference points and respectively determined positions of the vehicle, the route reference points and connections between the route reference points of at least part of the predefined route being represented schematically and the representations of the route reference points also containing symbols for roads which start from the route reference points and do not lie on the predefined route, characterized in that, in addition, the respective route reference point to which the vehicle is travelling can be represented schematically, including at least one directional arrow.
  7. Device according to Claim 6, characterized in that data which describe the predefined route and the route reference points are transmitted from a fixed computer to a vehicle unit located in the vehicle.
  8. Device according to Claim 6 or 7, characterized in that the symbols are short lines which differ from the connections between the route reference points.
  9. Device according to one of Claims 6 to 8, characterized in that in addition a symbol is represented for the respectively determined position of the vehicle.
  10. Device according to one of Claims 6 to 9, characterized in that the presentation of the respective route reference point indicates the layout of the road at the route reference point, for example a roundabout.
