Abstract
Description
- The invention involves an arrangement of the catching box for a riveting tool with the suctioning of blind rivets, or torn-off pins of blind rivets as the case may be.
- At the present time pneumatic hydraulic riveting tools are provided at the back with a catching box for the torn-off pins of blind rivets which is generally attached by sliding it onto the body of the tool. From the point of view of safety in the operation of the riveting tool, the catching bos must be axially secured against slipping. When the box has to be emtpied, it is possible to release the lock, slide the box off from the body of the tool and only then tip out the blind rivet pins. This process involves time loss and associated reduction of productivity in the riveting work. There also exist catching boxes in which the solid part is axially secured against slipping from the body of the tool and the movable part is mounted on the solid part in such a way that, when the discharge openings in the catching box are opened, there is no interference with the suctioning function. It can happen, even tough the likelihood is very low, that careless operators shoot the pins of the torn-off rivets out from the tool.
- Based on this prior art, it is therefore an object of the present invention to eliminate the above-mentioned defects.
- This object is achieved by a catching box for a riveting tool comprising the features of claim 1.
- Hence, the solid part of the catching box is permanently axially secured to the riveting tool. Thereby safe positioning of the box on the tool is achieved, making it unnecessary to check. At the same time, the risk of forceful ejection of the pins of the blind rivets during emptying of the catching box is eliminated. The suctioning function is thereby rendered safe.
- In an embodiment according to
claim 3, the rotatable housing of the catching box is axially secured against shifting of the pin reaching into the recess in the rotatable disc situated in the radial inner partition. It is possible to empty the catching box, while maintaining the strictest safety conditions, after simply turning the rotatable housing. - An arrangement according to
claim 4 is simple from a structural and production standpoint, both the solid part and the rotatable housing being made from plastic. - According to
claim 5 an arrangement of the solid part of the catching box is again uncomplicated from the point of view of production. It is simpler to join two easily produced sections of the solid part of the box, that is to say, the supporting body with the radial inner partition and the catching section, than it is to produce a relatively composite from for the complete solid part. - In an embodiment according to
claim 7 the risk is completely eliminated of torn-off rivet pins being forcefully ejected from the back of the tool during the opening of the discharge holes of the catching box and at the same time it is not necessary to interrupt the rivet suctioning operation. - The invention can be explained in more detail by means of the attached drawings and by reading the following detailed description of examples of its actual operation. Figure 1 shows in longitudinal section part of the riveting tool with the main operating channel for passage of torn-off pins of blind rivets and with the catching box in the operating position where the two discharge openings of the box coincide. Figure 2 shows the same part of the riveting tool as Figure 1, but the catching box of the tool is now in the operating position where the discharge openings of the solid part and the rotatable housing of the box are out of line. Figure 3 shows in cross section the arrangement of the rotatable disc, fitted in the inner radial partition of the pot-shaped solid part of the catching box by means of an eccentrically placed, externally opening shaped groove in it. Figure 4 is a view of the arrangement of the discharge openings in the bottom of the pot-shaped solid part and of the rotatable housing of the catching box, which are either out of line or coincide as the housing is rotated.
- The catching box of the riveting tool with suctioning of the torn-off pins of nut or screw blind rivets is tightly connected to the back end of the main operating channel 1 for passage of the torn-off pins of the blind rivets from the tool to the box. The torn-off rivet pins are gradually collected in the box during the riveting operation and once its inner space is filled, the pins are discharged.
- The catching box is formed from a solid plastic rotary body with an internal cavity for the torn-off pins of the blind rivets. It comprises a pot-shaped
solid part 2 with aninner partition 3 transversely arranged to the main operating channel 1 having acentral passage opening 10 basically corresponding to the opening in the main operating channel 1. For simplification of production, thesolid part 2 generally comprises a supporting body with means of attaching it to the riveting tool, a radialinner partition 3 included therein and a firmly connected catching part. Its outer casing is provided with at least one air by-pass opening (figures 1 and 2 show the whole row of by-pass openings). A closed housing 4 (therotatable housing 4 is secured against slipping by a pin) is tightly (for example, by means of sealing rubber O-rings) rotatable fitted to thesolid part 2 so that between the outer casings of thesolid part 2 and the rotatable housing 4 acontinuous space 5 is formed for passage of air from the rivet suctioning system. Thecontinuous space 5 is formed by means of a peripheral recess in the casing of thesolid part 2, formed along the greater part of the length of the casing so that its marginal full surfaces form a guide for thesolid part 2 in therotatable housing 4. Therotatable housing 4 is provided in its casing with anair vent opening 6 . Thesolid part 2 and therotatable housing 4 havedischarge openings 7 at the bottom for the torn-off rivet pins. - The radial
inner partition 3 is provided with an eccentrically placed rotatable plastic disc 8 (fitted in the recess in the partition and rotatable on a pivot going through the central opening in the disc and fitted with its ends in the relevant openings in the partition 3 ) with detent at least in the two operating positions. In thedisc 8 is afirst opening 9, corresponding in size to the central passage opening 10 in theinner partition 3, and a secondsmaller opening 11. Both theseopenings rotatable disc 8 so that thefirst opening 9 is lined up with the central passage opening 10 in theinner partition 3 when thedischarge openings 7 of thesolid part 2 and of therotatable housing 4 are out of line and the secondsmaller opening 11 is lined up when the twodischarge openings 7 coincide. Between thefirst opening 9 and the secondsmaller opening 11 is a series of openings having diameters corresponding basically to the diameter of the second, smaller opening 11 (these are not illustrated). In the alternative application, thefirst opening 9 can be connected to thesecond opening 11 by a groove whose width corresponds to the diameter of the secondsmaller opening 11. - As mentioned above, there is a
rotatable disc 8 fitted in theinner partition 3 by means of an eccentrically placed, externally opening shapedgroove 12 therein, the sides of which form the side-stop for the terminal positions of theguide pin 13 which is fixed in the casing of therotatable housing 4 and which, with its interior end, extends into the drop-shapedrecess 14 in therotatable disc 8. - In the working operating position of the catching box, when the suctioned and collected pins from the blind rivets are inside the inner pot-shaped
part 2, the passage in the main operating channel 1 is open through to the box space and at the same time thedischarge openings 7 are out of line, so that the box is closed. The suctioned air from the suctioning system of the riveting tool, which comes via the main operating channel 1, passes through thefirst opening 9 in therotatable disc 8 into the interior space of the box and from the by-pass openings in the peripheral casing of thesolid part 2 of the box it goes to the continuous ring-shapedspace 5 between the peripheral casings of thesolid part 2 and therotatable housing 4 of the box and is expelled through thevent opening 6 in therotatable housing 4. A torn-off rivet pin is sucked into the suctioning system of the riveting tool and is subsequently conveyed to the main operating channel 1 of the tool and then to the catching box. In that operating position the box allows the suctioned air brought to it to pass freely from the tool to the outside. - As soon as the catching box is full of torn-off rivet pins then, without it being necessary to switch off (interrupt) the suctioning operation of the riveting tool, by simply turning the
rotatable housing 4 to the second operating position the intake for the suctioned air to the catching box will partly close. By rotating thehousing 4 through which theguide pin 13 goes, extending into the drop-shapedrecess 14 in therotatable disc 8, thedisc 8 will simultaneously rotate to the position where the secondsmaller opening 11 is adjacent to the main operating channel 1. The suctioned air passes through this secondsmaller opening 11 and its entry to the box is therefore limited. The suctioning of the torn-off rivet pins into the catching box is thereby spontaneously interrupted. At the same time, with the rotation of thehousing 4, the twodischarge openings 7 coincide and it is possible to empty the catching box. By interrupting the suctioning operation of the torn-off rivet pins while the catching box is in this operating position, the risk is completely eliminated of their forceful ejection from the back of the riveting tool. While therotatable disc 8 is in this operating position, rotated across the central passage opening 10 in thepartition 3 so that the axis of thiscentral opening 10 is lined up with the axis of the second smaller opening 11 (or, in the intermediate position of therotatable disc 8 , with the series of smaller openings or the groove in thedisc 8 as the case may be), the risk is similarly eliminated of forceful ejection or escape of rivet pins even from the front of the tool. The invention can be used in pneumatic hydraulic riveting tools with suctioning of blind rivets or torn-off pins of blind rivets, as the case may be.
