Definitions

  • the present invention relates to the field of mail processing and more particularly the franking machines ensuring complete preparation of mail for shipping.
  • the applicant in its European patent application EP 0 612 036 has proposed a mail processing system that ensures the folding and insertion into envelopes of documents directly from a word processing system.
  • the mail item thus obtained may be dispatched only if the envelope contains the address of the addressee and is properly stamped, which supposes at least the addition of a franking machine to that address. system.
  • EP 0 265 192 discloses a mail processing system associating around a central computer (system controller) on the one hand a first laser printer followed by a folder / inserter ensuring the folding and the insertion of documents in envelopes and secondly a second ink jet printer printing the address of the recipient on these envelopes. It should be noted that such a system does not however envisage the postage of the mail articles thus produced. In addition, the printing of the address directly on the envelopes containing the documents is not without some drawbacks (in terms of print quality) due to the different thicknesses that these envelopes may have.
  • the present invention provides a fully autonomous system that can be used very simply in a conventional office environment and is intended to completely treat a mail item, from the constitution of the individual document or documents constituting this article of mail to the closing of this article with a view to its dispatch, including the folding and insertion of the documents in an envelope and the printing on this envelope of all useful information including the recipient's address and the postal imprint.
  • a system for preparing mail items including a general purpose computer for preparing a document to be sent, a postal security device connected to the general-purpose computer via a secure link to communicate information to him. postage, a printer connected to the general-purpose computer for printing both the document to be sent and at least one address of a recipient of this document and a postal stamp on an envelope to receive this document, and a folder / inserter connected to both the printer and the general purpose computer to receive and fold the printed document and insert it into the corresponding stamped envelope.
  • the printer includes an envelope feeder, a document feeder, a print module attached to either the envelope feeder or the document feeder to print the envelope and envelopes in succession. documents, and a document output connected to the print module for delivering the envelopes and documents to the folder / inserter, a control module being further provided for controlling the printing and synchronization of the transport of the envelopes and documents based on orders received from the general purpose computer.
  • this printer may further comprise a document receiving magazine connected to the printing module for extracting printed documents not to be dispatched,
  • the printing module comprises one of the following two elements: laser printing drum or inkjet printing head.
  • the folder / inserter comprises an accumulation module connected to a document entry for storing the different documents corresponding to a given envelope if necessary, a folding module connected either to the document entry or to the accumulation module to fold the documents. documents before insertion into the envelope, a turning module connected to the document entry for receiving and positioning the envelope for the insertion of documents, and an insertion module connected to the folding and turning modules to insert the documents in the corresponding envelope and eject the resulting mail article to a document output, a control module being further provided for the control and synchronization of these different modules according to orders received from the general purpose computer.
  • the folder / inserter may further comprise a module for supplying advertising inserts.
  • the printer may be constituted by a printing module integrated with the folder / inserter.
  • FIG. 1 schematically illustrates an autonomous mail preparation system according to the invention.
  • This system consists of four main components: a computer 10, a Secure Metering Device (SMD) 12, a digital printer 14 and a folder / inserter 16.
  • SMD Secure Metering Device
  • FIG. 1 schematically illustrates an autonomous mail preparation system according to the invention.
  • This system consists of four main components: a computer 10, a Secure Metering Device (SMD) 12, a digital printer 14 and a folder / inserter 16.
  • SMD Secure Metering Device
  • the computer 10 is a general-purpose computer, for example a PC-type personal computer or the like (but a workstation or a network computer may also be suitable), typically comprising a central processor to which are connected by a link bus program memories (for example of ROM type) and of use (of the RAM or equivalent type) and input / output modules. These modules provide the interface between the central processor and various devices such as a keyboard or other conventional input device such as a pointing assembly, a display device such as a liquid crystal display, a data storage device such a hard drive, and the SMD or even the digital printer.
  • a keyboard or other conventional input device such as a pointing assembly
  • a display device such as a liquid crystal display
  • a data storage device such as a hard drive
  • SMD digital printer
  • SMD 12 performs the accounting functions generally associated with a traditional franking machine. It communicates franking information, advantageously coded, for transmission of postal stamps (the postal fingerprint) by the computer 10 to the digital printer 14.
  • the connection between the SMD and the computer is a secure communication link, ie impervious to unauthorized interception.
  • the SMD can also be housed in the computer and the securing of data provided by means of appropriate encryption software. The details of the communications that may occur between the computer 10 and the SMD 12 are described in US Patent Application US 56,268 to C.Shah and K.Robertson of the Applicant.
  • the digital printer 14 is a general purpose printer, for example a laser printer or an inkjet printer, and can therefore be implemented by the computer 10 in a very conventional manner. In particular, apart from printing postal imprints, it can be used as any document printing terminal in connection with the standard software market such as Word, Excel, or Access for example (software company Microsoft Corporation) implanted in the computer 10.
  • Folder / inserter 16 may be a conventional folder / inserter of the type described in patent EP 0 652 392 in the name of the applicant and which will be added a specific envelope supply interface or be specially designed for the mail preparation system according to the invention as it will be explained further.
  • FIG. 2 shows in more detail the structure of the printer 14 and the folder / inserter 16 and illustrates schematically the routing of the mail items in these two components.
  • the printer 14 comprises conventionally a first feed magazine 20 for receiving the empty envelopes 22 and a second feed magazine 24 for receiving the blank documents to be printed 26.
  • This second magazine is conventionally in the form of a front loading insert.
  • Document paths 30, 32 make it possible to transport (the transport rollers and their motorization are not shown) respectively the envelopes and the documents to a printing module 34.
  • This module advantageously consists of either a printing drum. (for a laser printer) or printheads (for an inkjet printer).
  • a document path 36 makes it possible to direct the printed object, envelope or document, towards one or the other of the two outputs of the printer.
  • the first output allows the supply of a receiving magazine 28, conventionally placed on the top of the printer, and intended to receive the printed documents as part of a conventional use of the printer in connection with the computer.
  • general purpose 10 the second document output 29, advantageously placed at the rear of the printer, being intended to directly feed the folder / inserter at its document entry.
  • a control module 38 is of course provided at this printer to control printing and synchronize the transport of documents and envelopes from orders received from the general-purpose computer 10.
  • the folder / inserter 16 consists essentially of four modules.
  • the first module 40 is a document accumulator for storing documents relating to a given mail item and must therefore be put in the same envelope.
  • the second module 42 is a conventional pocket folding module which receives the documents to be folded either directly from a document entry 39 (in the case where the envelope must contain only one document) or from the storage accumulator.
  • Document 40 is a specific reversal module for modifying the position of the envelope to facilitate the insertion of documents in this envelope. Indeed, at the output of the printer 14, the envelopes are conventionally in a longitudinal direction while the insertion of documents must be performed transversely.
  • the fourth module 46 is a conventional insertion module which receives the empty envelope on the one hand and the document or documents to be inserted on the other hand and which performs the insertion.
  • the mail article thus obtained is then ejected to a document output 49 of the folder / inserter.
  • secondary modules have not been represented although they are part of such a folder / insereuse. This is for example the wetting module which ensures the gluing of the envelope flap after insertion or an additional module for supplying advertising inserts.
  • this folder / inserter 16 includes a control module 48 for controlling the transport of the documents and their folding, the transport and the turning of the envelopes and the insertion of the documents in the envelope corresponding to from orders received from the computer 10.
  • FIG. 3 represents a flowchart of the operations performed during the preparation of a mail item.
  • the transport of an envelope and its printing are then carried out in a step 104.
  • the printing comprises at least that of the recipient's address and the postal stamp.
  • the envelope thus stamped is conveyed in a step 106 to the entry of the insertion module 46 of the folder / inserter after being redirected by the module 44.
  • the transport of a document and its printing are then carried out in a step 112.
  • the printed document is or not the only document to be inserted into the pre-stamped envelope (test in step 114), it is proceeded or not in a new step 116 to intermediate storage of this document in the accumulation module 40.
  • the printed document or documents are folded by the folding module 42 in a next step 118 and then inserted into the envelope at the insertion module 46 (step 120).
  • the article of mail thus produced is glued and ejected towards the exit of the folder / inserter 16.
  • step 124 An absence of ejection is detected in a step 124 which causes the emission of alarms both at the level of the folder / inserter than of the computer 10 (step 126) and a stop of the process of treatment. If the ejection occurred without incidents, it is checked in a new test step 128 if the processed mail article is the last, which has the effect of stopping the process, or on the contrary if other letters are waiting for preparation. It is then returned to step 102 of selecting the envelope magazine for a new operation of preparing the next mail article.
  • the present invention is not limited to the single preferred embodiment described and variants or supplements may be envisaged without departing from the scope of the invention.
  • the computer can also be connected to a credit repair station remotely located in a local of a postal administration or any other authorized body.
  • the printer 14 can be replaced by a printing module integrated in the folder / inserter 16, the assembly then being in the form of a specific autonomous office automation machine for preparing the mail .
