    Claims (10)

    1. M ethod of sealingly connecting a first edge region (5) of a lower part (2) of a packaging container (1) consisting of sheet metal to a second edge region (6) of a closure element (4) consisting of sheet metal,
      wherein the second edge region (6) supports an annular seal (15) which co-operates with the first edge region (5),
      and wherein, within the annular seal (15), a first wall (7) of the first edge region (5) and a second wall (8) of the second edge region (6) lie opposite each other,
      comprising the following steps:
      a) placing the closure element (4) with the annular seal (15) on the first edge region (5),
      b) exerting on the second edge region (6) an axial pressure force (19) by means of a pressure tool (18) until the annular seal (15) is compressed in a sufficiently sealed manner,
      c) contacting an expanding tool (22) with a radially inner side (21) of the second edge region (6), and
      d) expanding the first (5) and the second edge regions (6) as one by means of the expanding tool (22) until a positively locking closure is achieved,
         characterised in that in step d) the positively locking closure is produced at the first wall (7) and the second wall (8),
         and that during expansion by a corresponding shaped contour (53) in the pressure tool (18, 39) a second free end region (13) of the second edge region (6) is deformed relative to a first free end region (10) of the first edge region (5) into a position which is around the first free end region (10) and in which there is a radial spacing between the first free end region (10) and the second free end region (13) such that no positively locking closure occurs between the two free end regions (10, 13).
    2. Method according to claim 1 characterised in that the first wall (7) and the second wall (8), at least over a part of the axial length thereof, are shaped by the expanding tool (22) at a negative angle (61) relative to a longitudinal axis (33) of the packaging container (1) with a diameter which increases in relation to an internal space (62) of the packaging container (1).
    3. Method according to claim 2 characterised in that the first wall (7) and the second wall (8) are shaped in supporting relationship by a radially outwardly arranged, longitudinally divided, annular counter-holding member (49) with a complementary shaped contour (63).
    4. Method according to one of claims 1 to 3 characterised in that arranged radially outside the edge regions (5, 6) is a longitudinally divided annular counter-holding member (49) and that during expansion by a corresponding shaped contour (52) in the counter-holding member (49) a part of the second free end region (13) of the second edge region (6) is deformed relative to the first free end region (10) of the first edge region (5) into the position which is favourable for use of the packaging container (1).
    5. Method according to claim 1 characterised in that prior to step a) at least one upwardly open bayonet slot (54) is formed in the first wall (7), and that in step d) the positively locking closure is achieved in that a bayonet projection (58) which extends into the bayonet slot (54) is formed in the second wall (8) by the expanding tool (22).
    6. Method according to one of claims 1 to 5 characterised in that in step d) there is formed on an axially outer end (26) of the second wall (8) a bead (27) which extends radially inwardly beyond the outer end (26).
    7. Method according to one of claims 1 to 6 characterised in that prior to step a) the first free end region (10) is formed as an outwardly rolled region of at least 360°.
    8. Method according to claim 7 characterised in that a free end (11) of the outwardly rolled region (10) is opposite a radially outer section (12) of the outwardly rolled region (10).
    9. Method according to one of claims 1 to 8 characterised in that the ratio V = (nominal diameter of the packaging container (1)): (effective axial length (38) of the expanding tool 22)) is made 15 to 25.
    10. Method according to claim 9 characterised in that the ratio V is made 18 to 22.
