Definitions
- the invention relates to a signal amplifier stage at high frequency (HF) or intermediate frequency (FI).
- HF high frequency
- FI intermediate frequency
- the realization of amplification chains operating in HF or FI generally uses amplifiers whose input impedance is fairly weak and well defined because it is necessary that there is adaptation of the input impedance of the amplifier to the output impedance of a generator connected to the input of this amplifier.
- the structure best suited to this type application is a common base entry stage.
- the input stage comprises a transistor mounted in common base.
- the signal input is applied to the emitter of the transistor, the base being polarized by a fixed potential and the emitter being polarized by a constant current.
- the output signal is taken from the transistor collector's voltage thanks to load resistance.
- k is the Boltzmann constant (1.38 E-23 SI)
- q is the charge of the electron (1.6 E-19 SI)
- T is the absolute temperature of the transistor and I co the collector current at rest.
- Av V S1
- V E1 R vs .I co kT q
- V E1 being the input voltage of the stage.
- V S1 being the output voltage of the stage.
- R c is the value of the load resistance connected between the collector of the transistor and a supply voltage VCC.
- V in being the large signal input voltage
- the output voltage varies exponentially with the input voltage. This shows the mediocre linearity of this stage.
- the “linear” area in input is a few kT / q, or a few tens of millivolts at most. Of plus, the nonlinear transfer characteristic is generative harmonics and intermodulation output.
- the first solution known as “degeneration” consists in adding a resistance in series (degeneration resistance) between the input of the amplifier stage and the transistor emitter mounted in common base.
- the input impedance is increased by the value of this resistance, which leads to increasing the quiescent current of the transistor, since the input impedance of the transmitter varies as the inverse of the current rest.
- the linear area at the input of such a stage is of the order of the product of current through the degeneration resistance plus a few kT / q. So she is higher than that of the non-degenerate floor.
- the second solution consists in mounting two transistors in the form differential, each of the transistors being mounted in common base.
- the emitters of the transistors are attacked by a signal input in differential form, the output of the stage being effected from the same way in differential form on the collectors of the two transistors.
- the realization of the input stage in differential form allows double the input impedance of the amplifier. We can double the current of each transistor if you want to keep the same input impedance.
- the linear input area is more than doubled compared to the floor simple, with only one transistor, thanks to the curvature compensation from one transistor to the other.
- the noise factor is slightly degraded compared to the floor reference.
- the increase in the admissible level is higher than the noise degradation.
- the useful dynamics are therefore slightly improved.
- the transfer characteristic is odd, so that the output spectrum contains few harmonics 2 and the intermodulation level is higher low.
- This stage in differential form like the degenerate stage is interesting to increase the admissible level, when the performances in noise are not too critical.
- the disadvantage of this floor is require a signal in differential form, which is rarely the case in HF systems, where the signal is often referenced to ground.
- the differential stage can be degenerate by putting a resistor in series between each differential input of the stage and each transmitter of the two transistors. This will extend the input linearity range but at the expense of the noise factor. In this configuration the admissible level of the input signal is increased but the useful dynamic is reduced.
- the invention proposes an amplifier stage whose general structure is as follows: the input is not differential but referenced with respect to a reference potential (mass for example); the entry is of common base type, i.e. that it is done on the emitter of an input transistor; this first transistor converts to current variations, with a non-linear transfer curve, in principle exponential for bipolar transistors and quadratic for field effect transistors, variations in input voltage; these current variations are themselves copied with change of sign, in a branch comprising a second and a third transistors, then they are converted into voltage variations, with a non-linear transfer curve, reciprocal of the previous one, in principle logarithmic or square root, by the third transistor, and the voltage across the third transistor is used as a feedback applied to the base of the first transistor.
- Current copying (with or without the same amplitude) is preferably done by passing the first transistor through an imposed current i, and by establishing a supply voltage [V be2 + V be3 + (R1 + k.R2) .i] at the terminals of a series assembly of a resistance of value R1 traversed by the current i, of an emitter-base junction of the second transistor, of a resistance of value R2, and of the third transistor mounted as a diode , V be2 and V be3 being the voltage drops across the base-emitter junctions of the second and third transistors assumed to be traversed by a current ki, k being a desired current ratio.
- FIG. 1 represents an amplifier stage according to the invention comprising two branches, the first of which comprises at least one first resistor 11 of value R1 in series with a first transistor 21 and a current source 30 of value i, and the second of which comprises at least a second transistor 22 in series with a second resistor 12 of value R2 and with a third transistor 23, the emitter of the third transistor 23 being connected to a reference potential Vo, the input E of the amplifier being connected to the emitter of the first transistor 21 (by a capacity Cin for example), means 40 for applying to the two branches an identical potential V1 whose value taken with respect to the reference potential Vo, is equal to [V be2 + V be3 + (R1 + k.R2) .i], V be2 and V be3 being respectively the voltage drops between base and emitter of the second and third transistors when they are traversed by a current ki, and k being a ratio any desired between the current flowing through the second branch and the current flowing through the first, the base of the second transistor 22 being connected to the collector of the first
- the identical potential V1 applied to the two branches is equal to [2 V be3 + (R1 + k.R2) .i].
- the current in the first transistor 21 being i at rest, the sum of the collector currents of the first and third transistors (21 and 23) is constant. Indeed, at rest the tension on the collector of the first transistor 21 is equal to V1-R1.i.
- the voltage on the emitter of the second transistor 22 is equal to V1-R1.iV be3 .
- the voltage across the second resistor 12 is equal to V1-2V be3 -R1.i as V1 has a value equal to 2. (V be3 + R1.i), the voltage across the second resistor 12 is R1. i. So the current in the second resistor 12 and therefore in the third transistor 23 is established at i.
- the voltage on the base of the first and third transistors varies so like half of the input signal Ve, as a first approximation, in the case where the transistors 21 and 23 are identical.
- the transfer characteristic is odd, which guarantees a level weak even harmonics. This characteristic is linear over a range fairly wide which guarantees a low level of intermodulation.
- the signal at the output of the amplifier can be taken either from a first output S e connected to a junction point between the second resistor 12 and the emitter of the second transistor 22, or from a second output S c at a junction point between the collector of the first transistor and one end of the first resistor 11.
- the output impedance is much lower than if the signal is taken from the collector of the first transistor 21 and the charge has little influence on bandwidth.
- the means 40 for applying an identical potential V1 to the two branches and the current source 30 imposing the current i can be made by various known means. In a monolithic circuit, we can take advantage of the good pairing of components and the fact that all are at the same temperature, to create the potential V1 using a enslavement. The result is a little more complex than a simple source of current but only concerns direct voltages and currents and not the high frequency signal.
- the stage of FIG. 1 having been dimensioned so as to present an input impedance of 50 ohms and a gain of 25 dB, we obtain a noise factor of the order of 6 decibels and a signal level value input to obtain a compression point at 1 decibel, comparable to that of the classic floor in common base.
- the level of intermodulation of order 3 at the output of the stage is 36 dB lower than for the classic floor.
- the entry level to produce the same intermodulation level is 12 dB higher than for the floor classic.
- Harmonic level 2 is 30 dB lower with the new stage and the level of the other harmonics, in particular the harmonic 3 is very weak.
- the new floor therefore presents a significant improvement in performance compared to the prior art.
- Figure 2 shows a first variant of the base stage of the figure 1.
- the collector currents of the first transistor 21 and the second transistor 22 are in phase opposition. This feature can be used to recover the signal in differential form.
- the second branch comprises a third resistor 13, of value n.R1, n being less than 1, one end of which is connected to the collector of the second transistor 22, and the other receives the potential V1 equal to [2V be3 + (R1 + k.R2) .i], and the first resistor 11 of value R1 consists of the sum of a resistor 11a of value (1-n) .R1 connected to the collector of the first transistor 21, in series with a resistor 11b of value n.R1, the amplifier comprising two differential outputs, one S d1 connected to the junction point of these latter two resistors, and the other S d2 connected to the collector of the second transistor 22.
- Differential outputs S d5 and S d6 connected respectively to the collectors of the fourth and fifth transistors, the base of the fourth transistor and the base of the sixth transistor receiving alternating differential voltages V01 and V02 having a common mode potential V5 fixed equal to [V be4 + 2V be3 + (R1 + k.R2) .i], V be4 being the base-emitter voltage drop of the fourth transistor 24 when it is traversed by the current i.
- the current source 30 placed at one end of the first branch will be connected to a potential V d lower than the reference potential Vo applied to the other end of the first branch.
- the transistors used in the preceding diagrams are NPN transistors. Identical diagrams could be used with PNP transistors by reversing the polarities of the power supplies.
