Description

The subject of the present invention is a method of packaging compositions hot-melt adhesives crosslinkable by moisture and adhesive compositions thus obtained.

Hot-melt adhesives are generally used in the molten or liquid state and they acquire their adhesive properties by cooling by becoming solid.

Crosslinkable hot-melt adhesives, in particular those containing isocyanate groups, are widely used to assemble various materials such as wood, plastic, paper or cardboard due to their mechanical strength and their high thermal stability.

Such properties are mainly due to the fact that, afterwards on bonding, the reactive groups of the adhesive crosslink by reaction with water.

The aforementioned compositions, which are called reactants, must be preserved from any premature crosslinking so that they maintain good performance and good homogeneity at the time of bonding.

To this end, it has been proposed to package such hot-melt adhesives reagents in the following packaging:

The most common packaging consists of a simple container inside which a flexible barrier film is placed, most often in the form of a bag, said container possibly comprising a cover provided with a seal waterproof.

In EP-A-661221, it is proposed to pour the adhesive into a container primary in rigid material, the latter being placed in a secondary container of size and shape substantially identical to the first. The free surface of the adhesive is coated with a flexible film having reduced permeability to water vapor, and the whole is closed by a sealed cover.

In EP-A-469 564 and EP-A-649 718, it is proposed to package one or more several portions of adhesive in a flexible and compatible envelope during fusion, and to place the assembly thus formed in a second package, for example an envelope or container.

The packages which have just been described however have drawbacks.

The first two aforementioned packages require the transfer of the adhesive in the applicator device, which is generally achieved by means a heating plate. With the first container, there is a risk that the film internal tear or that the entire adhesive cannot be recovered due to film folds formed during filling of the container.

The last packaging mentioned requires the implementation of a step of shaping and conditioning the adhesive portion (s) which is relatively more complex and expensive than a simple distribution in the molten state.

The present invention provides a new method of packaging reactive hot melt adhesive compositions, more particularly with high power sticky and without substantial shrinkage, which makes it possible to obtain adhesives which can be used directly in a melter.

This process consists of:
  • pouring the adhesive composition in the molten state directly into a container coated internally with a non-stick material and externally with a moisture-proof material, the body of said container being provided with at least one primer of easy opening,
  • and attach a moisture-proof cover to the free side of the container.

Figure 1 shows a longitudinal section of the packaging used in the method according to the invention: the packaging consists of a container (1) whose wall inner has a non-stick coating (2) and the outer wall is made a moisture-proof material (3), and a cover (4) also moisture proof.

Figure 2 shows an overview of the packaging according to two preferred variants.

In variant a, the wall forming the bottom (6) of the container and the cover (4) consist of a rigid metal plate crimped onto the body of the container.

In variants a and b, the container body is provided internally a primer (8a) covered by a protection (9) and extended by a tongue (8b).

The reactive hot-melt adhesive composition is chosen from among the compositions which can be crosslinked by moisture, preferably with a high tackiness and do not representing substantially no volume contraction after cooling (withdrawal). By way of example, mention may be made of compositions containing silanes or isocyanates free or in the form of a prepolymer. By way of illustration, we may include diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), toluene diisocyanate (TDI), isophorone diisocyanate (lPDl), tetramethylxylene diisocyanate (TMXDI) and meta-vinyl-benzene isocyanate (m-TMI).

The packaging consisting of the container (1) and the internal coatings (2) and external (3) generally has a volume compatible with storage and easy handling. This volume can, for example, be between 0.5 and 5 liters, and preferably 1 to 3 liters and better still of the order of two liters.

The packaging can have any shape. However it is generally chosen so that the adhesive obtained after removing the packaging has a shape compatible with the melter of the application device. So preferred, the package has a cylindrical shape.

The container (1) is generally made of a material sufficiently rigid to allow easy transport and handling.

By way of example, mention may be made of kraft paper or cardboard, and polymers.

Advantageously, the container is obtained by spiraling and gluing kraft leaves.

The nature of the coating (2) can vary depending on the sticky appearance and the reactivity of the adhesive. The coating is generally made of a material which does not adhere to the adhesive. By way of example, mention may be made of polymers based on silicones or fluorinated compounds such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), poly-chlorotrifluoroethylene (PCTFE), polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), perfluorinated poly (ethylene-propylene) (FEP) and ethylene-PTFE (ETFE) copolymers. Preferably, silicones are used.

The coating (2) can be implemented from a resin or a varnish. It advantageously has a low permeability to water vapor.

The coating (3) is generally chosen from among the materials to be tested moisture, i.e. which is not substantially permeable to water. AT By way of example, mention may be made of metal, for example aluminum, polymers, or any other material. Preferably, metal and advantageously aluminum are used.

The rigid or flexible cover (4) is generally made of a material to the humidity test as described above. Preferably the cover is made of metal.

When the cover is rigid, it is advantageously fixed on the container by crimping.

When the cover is flexible, it is advantageously in the form of a lid which can be fixed on the container by thermal sealing in the presence of a varnish. This assembly is advantageously completed with an additional cover covering the cover to protect it from any tears during transport or storage. This cover can be made of metal, plastic or any other material, preferably plastic.

The container body has a primer to facilitate opening of the packaging.

By "primer" is meant here any means allowing to weaken the container in one or more places to orient the opening.

As examples, one can use perforations or one or more tongues, in particular as shown in FIG. 2. The tongue (8a), arranged inside the container is in contact with the coating (2) and can be fixed indifferently to the bottom (6) or to the cover (4). This tab has a free end (8b) for gripping.

Advantageously, it prevents possible sticking of the adhesive on the tongue (8a) by interposing a non-stick protection (9).

The adhesive composition thus packaged can be easily released from its packaging at the time of use by handling the primer and be placed in a melter.
