Abstract

A reed retainer, especially for a clarinet, consists of two split rings (1, 2) of a supple material, such as a metal, alloy or plastic, which pass round the mouthpiece of the instrument and are held in place by fastening screws. The split rings are connected by lengthwise strips (5) running parallel to the axis of the instrument's mouthpiece, and the retainer also has two fixed lengthwise rods (11) which are situated between the strips (5) and hold the reed in place. The two rods can be joined together at their ends by cross-pieces to make a separate assembly.

Description

The present invention relates to a new ligature for mouthpiece of a reed wind instrument, especially for mouthpiece clarinet.

We know that in instruments such as the clarinet or the saxophone, the reed is held in place on the mouthpiece of the instrument by a collar, called ligature, which marries the general shape of the beak and presses against the face curved external of the reed, while the flat face of it is in contact with a flat part of the spout.

The ligature is split according to one of its generators, and assembly means such as screws and threaded bores are provided on the two parts which are face each other, to make them interdependent of each other and thus causing a graduated tightening action on the reed.

A ligature of this type is described, for example, in French Patent No. 2,438,311, in the name of the Applicant.

Once assembled by screws or other means of tightening, the ligature is generally in the form a necklace comprising two rings, intended to be arranged in planes perpendicular to the axis of the spout, of so you can grip it and the reed associated, longitudinal struts regularly spaced joining these two rings and being disposed of substantially parallel to the axis of the spout. These spacers are usually not in contact with the reed, the only rings coming into contact with it, transversely to the fibers of the material of which it is formed, these fibers being arranged parallel to the axis of the beak.

The Applicant has however established that it is possible to modify the reed's vibration conditions to obtain a sound of a different quality, bringing together the two ligature rings with at least one and, from preferably two bars arranged substantially parallel to the axis of the spout and which, in the position of use of the ligature, bear longitudinally against the reed.

The invention therefore relates to a ligature for mouthpiece of a reed wind instrument, especially for mouthpiece clarinet, this ligature being constituted by a collar made of a flexible elastically deformable material, shape complementary to that of the mouthpiece to be fitted and the reed associated, this necklace comprising two rings intended to be arranged in two planes substantially perpendicular to the axis of the beak, these rings being split along the same generator of the spout and being joined by spacers longitudinal, intended to be arranged so substantially parallel to the axis of the spout, one or more means of tightening such as screws and nuts being provided to approximate the parts opposite each of the rings, in view to apply the reed against the beak, and to spread them one on the other, this ligature being characterized in that it includes at least one and preferably two bars interposed between two longitudinal spacers, parallel to these, this or these bars joining the two rings, of which they are rigidly integral, and being so arranged that in the position of use of the ligature, they bear longitudinally against the reed.

The longitudinal application of the bars of the ligature against the reed of the instrument appreciably modifies the vibration thereof and by therefore the resulting sound of the instrument.

This does not mean that this sound is "better" that that obtained with a ligature of the same type does not not comprising the bar or bars capable of bearing against the reed of the instrument. Indeed, if some instrumentalists and some listeners will judge better this sound, others will consider it less good, but this sound is different from that obtained with usual ligatures and it is this new and original effect which is a distinguishing feature of the ligature according to the invention, which also offers new possibilities of use with wind instruments traditional single reed.

A simple way to perform the ligature according to the invention will consist in bringing back the bar or a autonomous assembly comprising the two bars joined together between them transversely, at their two ends, on a usual ligature comprising two rings joined by regularly spaced longitudinal struts. A this type of ligature is an embodiment preferred of the invention.

  • La figure 1 est une vue en perspective de la ligature ;
  • Les figures 2 et 3 illustrent deux pièces planes de départ, de la mise en forme et de l'assemblage desquelles résulte la ligature représentée sur la figure 1 ;
  • La figure 4 est une vue en perspective éclatée illustrant les positions relatives d'un bec de clarinette, de l'anche associée et de la ligature représentée sur la figure 1 ;
  • The accompanying drawings, which are not limiting, illustrate such an embodiment. In these drawings:
  • Figure 1 is a perspective view of the ligature;
  • Figures 2 and 3 illustrate two planar starting parts, the shaping and assembly of which results the ligature shown in Figure 1;
  • Figure 4 is an exploded perspective view illustrating the relative positions of a clarinet mouthpiece, the associated reed and the ligature shown in Figure 1;
  • Figure 5 is a perspective view of the ligature of Figure 1, in the position of use on a clarinet mouthpiece.
The ligature shown in Figure 1 is derived a traditional ligature consisting of a necklace in one elastically deformable material (metal, alloy or material plastic), with a shape complementary to that of the spout wind instrument (here, a clarinet) and reed associated that it is intended to equip.

This necklace includes two rings 1 and 2, able to enclose the mouthpiece 3 of the instrument and the associated reed 4, these rings being intended to be arranged in two planes substantially perpendicular to the axis of the spout 3 (see figures 4 and 5). Rings 1 and 2 are joined longitudinally by spacers 5, regularly spaced, intended for be arranged substantially parallel to the axis of the clarinet mouthpiece, in contact with this mouthpiece, but not reed 4. The term "substantially" is used because, in the practical, the beak of a clarinet is not cylindrical, but has a slightly conical shape, as seen on Figures 4 and 5.

Rings 1 and 2 are split according to the same generator of the clarinet mouthpiece, as seen in 6 on Figure 1 or Figure 4. The two edges of the slots such as 6 are fitted with nuts 7 and 8, comprising reverse pitch bores, into which the rod 9 is screwed a nut, comprising two complementary threads also inverted, offset longitudinally. Doing turn the head 10 of the nut in one direction or the other, it is thus possible to bring together or dismiss one of the other the opposite edges of the slots such as 6, for tighten or loosen the ligature on the spout 3, so that make the reed 4 secured to this beak or to the dissociate.

Note that, in this case, as shown in Figure 2, the assembly consisting of split rings 1 and 2 and the spacers 4 is produced in a known manner by a simple grid-like cutting of a strip flat and by subsequent shaping of the flat part resulting from cutting.

According to the invention, the ligature comprises two bars 11, interposed between two contiguous spacers 5, parallel to these, these bars bringing together the rings 1 and 2 and being intended to come to apply longitudinally against the reed 4, in the direction of the fibers wood, to modify the vibrations of this reed and the sound emitted by the instrument.

In the present case (see FIG. 3), the bars 11 are joined transversely, at their two ends, by joining parts 12 to form a self-contained assembly 13, which is reported on the usual ligature from the part shown in Figure 2 and is made integral by welding or punching.

The invention therefore provides, in the art, a particularly simple binding, offering new modes of sound expression with simple reed wind instruments, especially clarinets.
