Definitions
- the present invention relates to packaging machines for producing sealed rectangular parallelepipedal containers filled with contents from a web of packaging material, and more particularly to a container transport conveyor for use in packaging machines for producing high and low two kinds of containers having the same cross sectional area but given different capacities by the difference in height.
- the conveyors of the type mentioned and already known include those disclosed in JPA No. 63-55038 and comprising a plurality of holders capable of holding high and low two kinds of containers having the same cross sectional area, and attachments equal in number to the number of holders and removably mountable on the respective holders, each of the holders comprising a flat bottom plate for supporting the bottom of the container thereon and a flat side plate orthogonal to the upper surface of the bottom plate, the side plate having a height as measured from the upper surface of the bottom plate and equal to the height of the low container, the attachment having a height equal to the difference between the high and low two kinds of containers in height.
- the side plate is formed in its top with a recessed fitting portion, and the attachment is formed at its bottom with a projecting fitting portion fittable into the recessed fitting portion.
- the recessed portion has a pin bore which is positionable in alignment with a pin bore formed in the projecting portion, a connecting pin being withdrawably insertable into the pin bores.
- the procedure for mounting the attachment on the holder or removing the attachment therefrom requires the two steps of fitting the projecting portion into the recessed portion or removing the former from the latter, and inserting the connecting pin into the pin bores or withdrawing the pin therefrom.
- the attachment can not be mounted on or removed from the holder by a snap-in or snap-out action.
- An object of the present invention is to provide a container transport conveyor of the type described wherein the attachment can be mounted on or removed from the holder by a simple snap-in or snap-out action.
- the present invention provides a container transport conveyor comprising a plurality of holders capable of holding high and low two kinds of containers having the same cross sectional area, and attachments equal in number to the number of holders and removably mountable on the respective holders, each of the holders comprising a flat bottom plate for supporting a bottom of the container thereon and a flat side plate orthogonal to an upper surface of the bottom plate, the side plate having a height as measured from the upper surface of the bottom plate and equal to the height of the low container, the attachment having a height equal to the difference between the high and low two kinds of containers in height, the conveyor being characterized in that the side plate is formed in a top thereof with on engaging bore, a ball plunger being accommodated within a peripheral wall defining the engaging bore and having a ball partly projectable into the engaging bore, the attachment having an insert rod extending downward from a bottom face thereof and withdrawably insertable into the engaging bore, the insert rod being formed in an outer peripheral surface thereof with an engaging recess for the ball of the ball plunger to fit in.

- the upper ends of the levers 152 are connected by a pair of links 153 to respective opposite ends of an arm 154, which is fixed to an intermediate portion of height of the movable rod 145.
- the support member 143 is in the form of a horizontal bar extending in the direction of travel of the chain, and has a length slightly smaller than the combined length of two transport blocks 71 so as to be coextensive with two adjacent blocks 71.
- the support member 143 is upwardly and downwardly movably held at its front and rear sides and right and left sides by a guide member 161 provided on the left guide rail 76.
- a lift arm 163 has a forward end connected by a link 162 to the midportion of length of the support member 143, and a base portion fixed to the left end of a horizontal pivot 164 laterally extending through the inner wall of the right side frame.25.
- the right end of the pivot 164 has fixed thereto the base portion of an actuating arm 165, which has a forward end connected to the piston rod of a fluid pressure cylinder 166 attached to the inside surface of the frame inner wall.
- the radius of rotation (pivotal movement) of the actuating arm 165 is approximately three times the radius of rotation (pivotal movement) of the lift arm 163.
- the upper ears and lower ears of the container are heated by the heating device 28 immediately before the container is fed to the ear bonding device 29 .
- the nozzles 125, 134 of the upper and lower heaters are indicated in dot-and-dash lines in FIG. 11.
- the upper ear pressing member 141 is lowered with the rod 145 to press the portion of the container to be made into the bottom thereof, while the arm 154 lowered with the movable rod 143 moves the upper ends of the two levers 152 away from each other, thereby moving the lower ear pressing members 142 toward each other to press the portions to be made into opposite side walls of the container against each other. Consequently, the upper ears are bonded by the upper ear pressing member 141 under pressure to the portion providing the bottom of the container, and the lower ears are bonded by the respective lower pressing members 142 under pressure to the respective portions providing the side walls of the container.
- the fluid pressure cylinder 166 Prior to the operation of the pressing member 141 and the pressing member 142, the fluid pressure cylinder 166 operates, rotating the actuating arm 165, pivot 164 and lift arm 163 counterclockwise in FIG. 11, whereby the forward end of the lift arm 163 is pushed up, causing the link 162 to push up the support member 143 into pressing contact with the lower surface of the chain 63.

The side plate is formed in its top with a recessed fitting portion, and the attachment is formed at its bottom with a projecting fitting portion fittable into the recessed fitting portion. The recessed portion has a pin bore which is positionable in alignment with a pin bore formed in the projecting portion, a connecting pin being withdrawably insertable into the pin bores.
- With the conveyor described, the procedure for mounting the attachment on the holder or removing the attachment therefrom requires the two steps of fitting the projecting portion into the recessed portion or removing the former from the latter, and inserting the connecting pin into the pin bores or withdrawing the pin therefrom. Thus, the attachment can not be mounted on or removed from the holder by a snap-in or snap-out action.
- With the conveyor of the invention, the side plate is formed in its top with an engaging bore, and a ball plunger is accommodated within a peripheral wall defining the engaging bore and has a ball partly projectable into the engaging bore, the attachment having an insert rod extending downward from its bottom face and withdrawably insertable into the engaging bore, the insert rod being formed in its outer peripheral surface with an engaging recess for engaging the plunger ball in. Accordingly, the attachment can be mounted on or removed therefrom simply by fitting the insert rod into the engaging bore or withdrawing the rod therefrom.
- The insert rod is circular in cross section, and the peripheral surface of the side wall defining the engaging bore has a circular cross sectional contour in conformity with the outer peripheral surface of the insert rod. The insert rod and the engaging bore can then be formed by facilitated machining.
- The side plate has a side face which is flush with a side face of the attachment, with the insert rod inserted in the engaging hole, the side face of the side plate being formed with a mortise opened upward, the side face of the attachment being formed with a retainer groove to be in communication with the mortise, a retainer having an upper portion fixed in the retainer groove and a lower portion fittable into the mortise. The attachment can then be retained in position against rotation when the insert rod is fitted into the engaging bore.
- Preferably a group of devices capable of producing the high and low two kinds of containers having the same cross sectional area but given different capacities by the difference in height are arranged along a path of transport of the containers.

pivot 33, comprising a crankshaft, hasjournals 41 and acrankpin 42. Thecrankpin 42 has a radius of revolution which is exactly one-half of the difference between the complete high container and the complete low container. Thejournal 41 extends through an upper end portion of eachfront post 31. Thejournal 41 at left projects leftward beyond thefront post 31 and is provided at the projecting portion with anoperating portion 43 having two parallel faces. A connectingpin 46 extends through theoperating portion 43 and themount 44 and is orthogonal to the axis of thejournal 41, to the two parallel faces and further to the axis of thegrip 45. - A U-shaped
lock member 47 is secured to the left side face of theleft front post 31 and positioned immediately below theoperating portion 43. Thelock member 47 has anengaging groove 48 facing leftward and left open at its upper and lower ends. - The
rear post 32 is formed in its upper end with anupward slit 51 let open at the front and rear ends. Theslit 51 has fitted therein the head of aneyebolt 52. Anengaging pin 53 extends through the slitted post upper end and through the head of theeyebolt 52. - The
crankpin 42 extends through the front ends of thedevice mount frame 35. An L-shapedstopper arm 54 is fixed to the front right corner of theframe 35. As seen in FIG. 3, ahook 55 for releasably engaging thestopper arm 54 with themount frame 35 in an upstanding position is attached to the rightfront post 31 in a forwardly projecting form. Thehook 55 is biased by unillustrated resilient means so as to be pivotally movable horizontally. The rear left corner of themount frame 35 is formed with acutout 56 opened rearward for inserting the shank of theeyebolt 52 thereinto. Theframe 35 has ahandle bar 57 projecting leftward and positioned to the front of and adjacent to thecutout 56. - FIG. 4 shows the
mount frame 35 in condition for the production of the higher of the two kinds of, i.e., high and low, complete containers. Thegrip 45 of thehandle 34 is in engagement with thelock member 47 with thecrankpin 42 up. Thepivot 33 is immovable in this state. Atubular spacer 58 fitting around theeyebolt 52 is interposed between the upper end face of therear post 32 and the lower surface of rear left corner of theframe 35. The height of thespacer 58 is equal to twice the radius of revolution of thecrankpin 42, i.e., to the difference between the high and raw complete containers in height. The screw portion of theeyebolt 52 is projected upward from thecutout 56 and has screwed thereon anut 59 provided with a fastening handle. - A size changing procedure will be described below for changing over the
mount frame 35 from the condition for producing high complete containers to the condition for producing low complete containers. Thenut 59 is loosened, and theeyebolt 52 is turned rearward with thespacer 58 thereon, moving the shank of theeyebolt 52 out of thecutout 56. Thenut 59 need not be removed from thebolt 52 at this time. - The
grip 45 of thehandle 34 is disengaged from thelock member 47, whereupon thepivot 33 is rotated through 180 deg by thehandle 34. Thehandle 34 which is directed upward by this movement is pivotally moved downward to bring thegrip 45 into engagement with thelock member 47. Consequently, the level of themount frame 35 is lowered by an amount corresponding to twice the radius of revolution of thecrankpin 42, i.e., to the difference between the high and low complete containers in height. On the other hand, the rear left corner of themount frame 35 is placed directly on the upper end face of therear post 32, and thenut 59 is tightened up with thespacer 58 positioned on the upper surface of the corner. This lowers the level of theentire frame 35 by the amount corresponding to the difference in height between the high and low complete containers, whereby the size changing procedure is completed. - As shown chiefly in FIGS. 2 and 5, the
container conveyor 14 comprises afront drive sprocket 61, a rear drivensprocket 62, anendless block chain 63 reeved around thesesprockets holders 64 attached to thechain 63 and arranged in succession so as to be in contact with one another, andattachments 65 equal in number to the number ofholders 64 and removably mounted on therespective holders 64. - The
chain 63 has a multiplicity of transport blocks 71. Each of theblocks 71 is formed with a forward projection 72 and rearwardly openedrecess 73. holder 74 comprises aflat bottom plate 81 secured to the upper surface of the transport block. 71, and aflat side plate 82 orthogonal to the upper surface of thebottom plate 81 and integral with theplate 81. Thebottom plate 81 and theside plate 82 have a width equal to the width of the high and low complete containers. The height of theside plate 82 as measured from the upper surface of thebottom plate 81 is equal to the height of the low complete container. The distance between theside plates 82 of the twoadjacent holders 64 is equal to the front-to-rear thickness of the high and low complete containers. - With reference to FIG. 6, the
side plate 82 is formed in its top with a vertical bottomed engagingbore 83 defined by a peripheral wall which is circular in cross section. The bore-defining peripheral wall is formed with a threadedbore 84 opened rightward for causing the interior of thebore 83 to communicate with the outside. Aball plunger 85 is screwed in the threaded bore 84 so as to cause the ball thereof to partially project into the engagingbore 83. Theinsert rod 88 is fixed to theattachment 65 with an engagingpin 89. Therod 88 is withdrawably insertable into the engagingbore 83. Theinsert rod 88 is formed in its outer peripheral surface with an annularengaging recess 91. With therod 88 inserted in thebore 83, the ball of theplunger 85 is fitted into the engagingrecess 91. - A
vertical retainer groove 92 opened upward and downward is formed in the left side face of theattachment 65. Aretainer 93 in the form of a strip is fixedly fitted in thegroove 92 and has a lower portion projecting beyond theattachment 65 and fittable into themortise 86. The length of the depending lower portion of theretainer 93 is smaller than the length of projecting lower portion of theinsert rod 88. Theretainer 93 is so shaped as to snugly fit into themortise 86 andgroove 91. - The
attachment 65 is removable from theholder 64 by pulling theattachment 65 upward to cause the ball of theplunger 85 to move out of the engagingrecess 91 and to withdraw theinsert rod 88 from the engagingbore 83. At this time, theretainer 93 is withdrawn from themortise 86 at the same time. Conversely, theattachment 65 can be mounted on theholder 64 by inserting the lower end of theinsert rod 88 into the engagingbore 83 and further inserting the entire lower half of therod 88 into the engaging bore 83 with theretainer 93 positioned immediately above themortise 86 to cause the ball of theplunger 85 to engage in therecess 91 and to fit theretainer 93 into themortise 86. Theattachment 65 is then unlikely to rotate or inadvertently become detached from theholder 64. - When the engaging
bore 83 and theinsert rod 88 are, for example, square in cross section, theattachment 65 need not be provided with retaining means for preventing rotation, so that themortise 86 and theretainer 93 can be dispensed with. - With reference to FIG. 7, the
ear folding device 27 comprises apressure plate 101 disposed above the container transport path, a pair of right and left upperear folding rods 102 arranged at opposite sides of the path, a pair ofupper guide rods 103 arranged immediately below therespective folding rods 102, a pair of right and left lower ear folding blocks 104 arranged at opposite sides of path of travel of the holders, and a pair oflower guide rods 105 arranged immediately above therespective blocks 104. - The
pressure plate 101 is fixed to the lower end of a verticallymovable rod 107 extending through avertical guide sleeve 106 on themount frame 35. Therod 107 has an upper end connected by arod 108 to one end of alever 109. The other end of thelever 109 has connected thereto the upper end of a verticalretractable rod 111 extending from thedrive mechanism 18. - The incomplete container C delivered from the
transfer device 16 is received by one of theholders 64 at the starting end of the container transport path. The container C received by the holder is so positioned that the portion thereof to be made into the top of a product faces downward with the bottom portion thereof up. The lower end of the incomplete container C in this state rests on the lower ear folding blocks 104 across the space therebetween, with a clearance formed between the container lower end and theholder bottom plate 81. - When the incomplete container C is transported as held by the
holder 64 to the location of theear folding device 27, theretractable rod 111 operates to lower thepressure plate 101 along with themovable rod 107. While the container C is being caused to descend by thepressure plate 101, the upper end portion of the container is folded flat by thepressure plate 101, and the lower end portion thereof is folded flat by theholder bottom plate 81. At the same time, a pair of triangular ears are folded upward by the upperear folding rods 102 at upper folding portions to project obliquely upward, and a pair of triangular ears are similarly folded by the lower ear folding blocks 104 at lower folding portions to project likewise. The container is thereafter guide to the position of theheating device 28, with the upper ears and the lower ears held folded by theupper guide rods 103 and thelower guide rods 105, respectively. - As shown in FIGS. 8 and 9, the
heating device 18 comprises anupper ear heater 121 disposed above the container transport path, and a pair oflower ear heaters 122 arranged at opposite sides of the path. - The
upper ear heater 121 comprises a heatermain body 124 incorporating an electric circuit, attached as directed vertically downward to themount frame 35 and having a downwardhot air outlet 12, and anozzle 125 connected to theoutlet 123. Thenozzle 125 comprises a tube having a rectangular cross section and generally L-shaped when seen from one side (FIG. 2). The horizontal portion of L-shapednozzle 125 has opposite lower aide edges each providing ajet orifice portion 126 which is V-shaped in cross section and opposed to the upper ear and the upper face of the container. - The
lower ear heaters 122 have the same construction although oriented in different directions laterally. The leftlower ear heater 122 will be described with reference to FIG. 9. Theleft side frame 25 has a top wall formed with acommunication opening 131. Theheater 122 comprises a heatermain body 133 incorporating an electric circuit, extending upwardly rightward within theleft side frame 25 and having an upwardhot air outlet 132, and anozzle 134 in the form of a tube having a rectangular cross section and generally L-shaped when seen from above, thenozzle 134 being connected to thehot air outlet 132. The heatermain body 133 has ahorizontal flange 135 around itshot air outlet 132. Thenozzle 134 has a base portion formed with ahorizontal flange 136, and a forward end providing ajet orifice portion 137 which is V-shaped in cross section. With thejet orifice portion 137 so positioned as to be opposed to the portion of the container between the lower ear and the side face thereof, thenozzle flange 136 is fastened to the frame top wall around thecommunication opening 131 so as to cover the opening along with the nozzle. Theflange 135 of the heatermain body 133 is inserted through theopening 131 and fastened to the lower face of thenozzle flange 136. - The heater
main body 133 is accommodated in theframe 25 and therefore unlikely to be exposed to water or to come into contact with some movable member. This obviates the possible break in the wiring of the electric circuit of theheater 122. - The
communication opening 131 is covered with thenozzle 134 and theflange 136 at the base portion thereof. This prevents water or like extraneous matter from ingressing into theframe 25 through theopening 131. - With reference to FIGS. 10 and 11, the
ear bonding device 29 comprises an upperear pressing member 141 disposed above the container transport path, a pair of right and left lowerear pressing members 142 arranged at opposite sides of the path, and asupport member 143 disposed under the path of travel of the chain. - The upper
ear pressing member 141 is fixed to the lower end of a verticallymovable rod 145 inserted through avertical guide sleeve 144 on themount frame 35. Therod 145 has an upper end connected by arod 146 to one end of alever 147. The other end of thelever 147 has connected thereto the upper end of a verticalretractable rod 148 extending from thedrive mechanism 18. - The lower
ear pressing members 142 are attached to the lower ends of a pair of right and leftlevers 152 mounted on abracket 151 depending from themount frame 35. The upper ends of thelevers 152 are connected by a pair oflinks 153 to respective opposite ends of anarm 154, which is fixed to an intermediate portion of height of themovable rod 145. - The
support member 143 is in the form of a horizontal bar extending in the direction of travel of the chain, and has a length slightly smaller than the combined length of twotransport blocks 71 so as to be coextensive with twoadjacent blocks 71. Thesupport member 143 is upwardly and downwardly movably held at its front and rear sides and right and left sides by aguide member 161 provided on theleft guide rail 76. Alift arm 163 has a forward end connected by alink 162 to the midportion of length of thesupport member 143, and a base portion fixed to the left end of ahorizontal pivot 164 laterally extending through the inner wall of the right side frame.25. The right end of thepivot 164 has fixed thereto the base portion of anactuating arm 165, which has a forward end connected to the piston rod of afluid pressure cylinder 166 attached to the inside surface of the frame inner wall. The radius of rotation (pivotal movement) of theactuating arm 165 is approximately three times the radius of rotation (pivotal movement) of thelift arm 163. - The upper ears and lower ears of the container are heated by the
heating device 28 immediately before the container is fed to theear bonding device 29 . (Thenozzles ear bonding device 29, theretractable rod 145 operates, lowering themovable rod 145. The upperear pressing member 141 is lowered with therod 145 to press the portion of the container to be made into the bottom thereof, while thearm 154 lowered with themovable rod 143 moves the upper ends of the twolevers 152 away from each other, thereby moving the lowerear pressing members 142 toward each other to press the portions to be made into opposite side walls of the container against each other. Consequently, the upper ears are bonded by the upperear pressing member 141 under pressure to the portion providing the bottom of the container, and the lower ears are bonded by the respective lower pressingmembers 142 under pressure to the respective portions providing the side walls of the container. - Prior to the operation of the
pressing member 141 and thepressing member 142, thefluid pressure cylinder 166 operates, rotating theactuating arm 165,pivot 164 andlift arm 163 counterclockwise in FIG. 11, whereby the forward end of thelift arm 163 is pushed up, causing thelink 162 to push up thesupport member 143 into pressing contact with the lower surface of thechain 63. As a result, the adjacent twoholders 64 then positioned above themember 143 are pushed up along with thechain 63, and therollers 76 of the pushed portion of thechain 63 are pressed against the upper walls of the guide rails 76 defining therespective guide grooves 77. When thepressing members members adjacent holders 64 and received by thesupport member 143 through thechain 64. - If the pressure acts on the
holders 64 in the absence of thesupport member 143, the two adjacent transport blocks 71 concerned will flex and incline relative to each other by an amount corresponding to the play of thechain rollers 75 between the upper and lower walls defining theguide grooves 77 or to a clearance involved in eachgroove 77, possibly permitting the twoadjacent holders 64 to flex relative to each other so that the space between theside walls 82 of theseholders 64 would enlarge from portion to portion upward. It would then be impossible to subject the container supported by theadjacent holders 64 to a suitable pressure to create a faulty ear seal. However, the presence of thesupport member 143 obviates the likelihood of theadjacent holder 64 flexing and faulty sealing. - Referring to FIG. 2 again, the
container discharge device 30 comprises alarge drive sprocket 171 and a small drivensprocket 172 which are disposed at one side of the terminal end of the container transport path, anendless chain 173 reeved around these twosprockets pusher pin 174 attached to thechain 173 so as to advance into the container transport path on the transport side of the path for the chain. - Similarly with reference to FIG. 2, the
drive mechanism 18 comprises adrive shaft 181 extending longitudinally of the machine and coupled at its rear end to themain shaft 17 by a belt, amain transmission shaft 183 having a rear end connected to the front end of thedrive shaft 181 via amain clutch 182, and adrive motor 185 connected to themain transmission shaft 183 via asecondary clutch 184. - The
drive shaft 181 has areduction gear unit 191 incorporated therein. Themain clutch 182 is a one-way clutch adapted for one-position engagement to transmit counterclockwise torque therethrough but not to permit transmission of clockwise torque as the clutch is seen from rear. Themain transmission shaft 183 has fixed thereto acam 192 for operating the ear folding device, acam 193 for operating the ear bonding device and agear 194 for driving the conveyors, as arranged from the rear forward. Theretractable rod 111 is coupled to thecam 192, and theretractable rod 148 to thecam 193. Thesecondary clutch 184 is a one-way clutch adapted for multi-position engagement to transmit clockwise torque therethrough but not to permit transmission of counterclockwise torque as the clutch is seen from rear. - The
conveyor drive gear 194 is in mesh with a drivengear 197 fixed to aninput shaft 196 of anindex body 195. Theindex box 195 has amain output shaft 198 projecting rightward and coupled to thedrive sprocket 61 of theconveyor 14, and asecondary output shaft 199 projecting forward. Asecondary transmission shaft 203 is coupled to thesecondary output shaft 199 by means of a pair ofbevel gears manual handle 204 is removably attached to one end of theshaft 203. Theshaft 203 is coupled to thedrive sprocket 171 of thecontainer discharge device 30 by a chain. - During the steady-state packaging operation, the
drive shaft 181 is driven by themain shaft 17 counterclockwise as it is seen from behind, with thehandle 204 removed from thesecondary transmission shaft 203. The rotation of thedrive shaft 181 is transmitted to themain transmission shaft 183 by themain clutch 182, whereas the rotation of theshaft 183 is not delivered to themotor 185 by thesecondary clutch 184. Thefirst device group 13 is driven by themain shaft 17, and theconveyors 14 and thesecond device groups 15 are driven by themain transmission shaft 183. When theconveyor 14 in driven, thedrive sprocket 61 is rotated clockwise, and thesecondary transmission shaft 203 is rotated counterclockwise as indicated by respective arrows in FIG. 2. - When the packaging operation is to be terminated, the
main shaft 17 is brought to a halt, whereby thefirst device group 13,conveyors 14 andsecond device groups 15 are all brought out of operation. When containers C are no longer delivered from thefirst device group 13 onto theconveyors 14 with thefirst device group 13 brought out of operation, the containers C sent to eachconveyor 14 immediately before the cessation of operation remain on theconveyor 14. Accordingly, the containers C need to be delivered from theconveyor 14. For this purpose, themotor 185 is operated to rotate the output shaft thereof counterclockwise as it is seen from behind. whereupon the rotation of the output shaft is delivered to themain transmission shaft 183, but the transmission of rotation of theshaft 183 to themain shaft 17 is interrupted by themain clutch 182. The rotation of themain transmission shaft 183 holds theconveyor 14 and thesecond device group 15 driven until all the containers C on theconveyor 14 are discharged. - When the size of containers is to be changed, the
attachments 65 need to be mounted on theholders 64 or removed therefrom. In this case, themanual handle 204 is attached to thesecondary transmission shaft 203 and then turned counterclockwise in FIG. 2. This drives thedrive sprocket 61 clockwise in FIG. 2. The operator mounts or removes theattachment 65 on or from the approachingholder 64 with one hand while moving thehandle 204 with the other hand. When thehandle 204 is rotated, themain transmission shaft 183 is rotated counterclockwise as it is seen from behind, whereas the transmission of rotation of theshaft 183 to themain shaft 17 is interrupted by themain clutch 182, while thesecond clutch 184 interrupts the transmission of rotation to themotor 185 in this case. - With reference to FIG. 2 and FIGS. 12 to 14, the
transfer device 16 comprises a slantingchute 211 generally U-shaped in cross section, attached to themain frame 11 in the vicinity of the incompletecontainer forming device 24 and extending from the container discharge position of thedevice 24 toward the space between the starting ends of container transport paths of the twocontainer conveyors 14; aslide plate 212 disposed between the path starting ends, connected to the lower edge of bottom wall of thechute 211 and inclined at the same angle as thechute 211; ahorizontal stopper plate 213 integral with the lower edge of theslide plate 212; a plurality ofcontainer receiving members 214 so arranged as to move upward and downward along thechute 211; and acontainer pushing member 215 reciprocatingly movable horizontally along theslide plate 212 thereabove. - The
chute 211 has a length corresponding to approximate combined length of three incomplete containers C, a width slightly larger than the width of the incomplete container C and a depth slightly smaller than the thickness of the incomplete container C. - The
slide plate 212 has such a length transversely of theconveyors 14 as to extend approximately over the entire space between theholder 64 on one of theconveyors 14 and the holder on theother conveyor 14, and a height approximately equal to that of one container C. Theplate 212 is attached to and extends between the forward ends of opposite side plates of atop frame 216 U-shaped in vertical section and extending over the top walls of the two front frames 12. Ahorizontal slit 217 is formed in an intermediate portion of height of theslide plate 212 to divide theplate 212 into upper and lower two portions. - The
container receiving members 214 are attached as arranged at equal intervals to a pair ofendless chains 221 extending in parallel to each other for driving thesemembers 214. Eachchain 221 extends from a position close to the upper end of thechute 211 to a position close to the lower end of theslide plate 212, is inclined at the same angle with thechute 211 and is so disposed as to cause the receivingmember 214 to advance into thechute 221 from thechain 221 in the lower path of travel thereof. The lower end of thechain 221 is reeved around adrive sprocket 223 fixed to achain drive shaft 222. A drivensprocket 224 for driving thedrive shaft 222 is fixed to thisshaft 222. The upper end of thechain 221 is reeved around a drivensprocket 226 fixed to a drivenshaft 225 for driving the chain (FIG. 2). - A
center plate 231 and a pair of right and leftside plates 232 are opposed to theslide plate 212 as spaced therefrom by a distance corresponding to the thickness of the container C. Thecenter plate 231 is in the form of a strip and extends between the pair ofchains 221 longitudinally thereof. Theside plates 232 are each in the form of a rectangular plate and arranged at the right and left sides of the pair ofchains 221. On one side of the path of travel of holders on eachconveyor 14 opposite to theside plate 232, there is disposed avertical plate 233 for preventing the container from falling down. - The
container pushing member 215 is generally H-shaped when seen in a plan view and attached to aslider 242 by a connectingmember 241 inserted through theslit 217. Theslider 242 is fitted to aguide rail 243 opposed to and extending in parallel to theslide 217, and has aguide groove 244 orthogonal to theguide rail 243. Theguide rail 243 is connected between the opposite side plates of thetop frame 216. - An
endless chain 245 for driving thecontainer pushing member 215 is provided between the bottom plate of thetop frame 216 and theguide rail 243. Attached to thechain 245 is a pushingpin 246 fitted in theguide groove 244. Thechain 245 is reeved at its right end around adrive sprocket 247 and at its left end around a drivensprocket 248. A drivensprocket 249 is fixed to thedrive sprocket 247 concentrically therewith and is in mesh with adrive gear 250, which in turn is fixed to anoutput shaft 252 of asecondary gear box 251. - With reference to FIG. 2, a
main gear box 253 is disposed at a position obliquely forwardly downward of thesecondary gear box 251. Themain gear box 253 has a forwardly projectinginput shaft 254, and a leftwardly projectingoutput shaft 255. Theinput shaft 254 is driven by themain transmission shaft 183 in synchronism therewith by way of an unillustrated transmission mechanism. Adrive sprocket 256 for driving thedrive shaft 222 is secured to theoutput shaft 255. The drivensprocket 224 and thedrive sprocket 256 have reeved therearound anendless chain 258 passed aroundidle sprockets 257. A connectingpipe 259 extends from thesecondary gear box 251 to themain gear box 253. An unillustrated intermediate shaft inserted through thepipe 259 drives the twogear boxes - Power is transmitted from the
main transmission shaft 183 to theinput shaft 254 of themain gear box 253 to drive the output shaft 265. The drive force is transmitted to thedrive shaft 222, moving theendless chains 221 for driving thecontainer receiving members 214 counterclockwise in FIG. 2. Consequently, themembers 214 are lowered on the lower paths of travel of the chains, and are moved upward on the upper paths of travel of the chains. The speed of travel of thecontainer receiving members 214 is made lower than the velocity at which the container C falls along thechute 211 under gravity. - When the
secondary gear box 251 is driven on the other hand, theendless chain 245 for driving thecontainer pushing member 215 is driven. With the movement of thechain 245, the pushing in 246 moves as fitted in theguide groove 244. On the upper or lower path of travel of thechain 245, the pushingpin 246 moves straight rightward or leftward, moving theslider 242 along theguide rail 243. On one turn path from the upper path to the lower path, or on the other reverse turn path, thepin 246 pushes theslider 242 while moving upward or downward within theguide groove 244, and the direction of travel of theslider 242 is reversed in the meantime. Thecontainer pushing member 215 is moved with theslider 242. - The
container receiving members 214 are timed with thecontainer pushing member 215 so that every time the receivingmembers 214 are moved a distance corresponding to the pitch thereof, the pushingmember 215 is moved rightward or leftward by one stroke length of its reciprocating travel. - The container C is allowed to fall off the incomplete
container forming device 24 into thechute 211 and received by the uppermost receiving members during descent. It is desired that the position at which the container is received by themembers 214 be as high as possible within thechute 211. The distance the container C falls spontaneously can then be small, and the container C will not be damaged when received. With the travel of the receivingmembers 214, the container C is lowered while sliding on the bottom wall of thechute 211. Upon themembers 214 receiving the container C reaching the lower end of the path of travel of the chains, the container so far received by themembers 214 are transferred from thechute 211 onto theslide plate 212 and received by thestopper plate 213. Thecenter plate 231 which holds the container at this time eliminates the likelihood that the container C will jump owing to the impact of reception. The pushingmember 215 moves along to push the container C as received by thestopper plate 213. The container C as received by thestopper plate 213 and held between theslide plate 213 and theside plate 232 is pushed rightward or leftward while sliding on theslide plate 213. Now, suppose the container C is pushed rightward. When the container C has been pushed to the right end of theslide plate 213, the container C is discharged rightward from theslide plate 213 and received in the space between a pair ofadjacent holders 64 on theright conveyor 14. - When the following container C is received by the
stopper plate 213, the container C is pushed leftward this time on theslide plate 213 by the pushingmember 215 moved leftward and then discharged from the left end of theslide plate 213 to the space between a pair ofadjacent holders 64 on theleft conveyor 14. The operation described above is repeated in succession, whereby the containers C discharged from the incompletecontainer forming device 24 in a raw are dividedly deliverd to the right and leftconveyors 14 alternately.
