Abstract

The cartridge has a body (2) which fits onto a respirator mask (6) and connects with the ambient medium via exhalation (13) and inhalation (22) valves. The body has two chambers (8,9) linked by a passage (10) which has a guide rod passing through it. One of the chambers is connected to the respirator mask and the other to the ambient atmosphere. The guide rod carries the mobile exhalation valve (13) with apertures (21), and the mobile inhalation valve which fits inside the passage and covers the apertures. Both valves are held under tension by coaxial spiral springs (14,23) on the guide rod which are held between the valves and stops (4,15). The guide rod is located concentrically in the housing, which has an inner annular rim defining the passage and acting as a stop for the exhalation valve.

Description

The present invention relates to the field of respiratory control in subjects with or sensitive to or exposed to hypoxia.

Although the field of the invention is all of the problems posed by hypoxia, the modulating cartridge is more particularly intended for subjects sensitive to an altitude environment and for which it is important, even absolutely necessary to restore or improve physical performance, prevent the onset of symptoms of altitude sickness such as that known as acute mountain sickness, or even treat the complications in first aid that such a symptom induces.

In the above field, it can be said that the prior art, on the basis of available publications, does not offer effective means for combating hypoxia in healthy subjects, any more than in subjects with pathology at sea level.

There are certainly known respiratory maneuvers that the subject is required to perform to counter alveolar hypoventilation responsible for the symptoms observed.

Such respiratory maneuvers can be described as "closed-lip breathing", inversion of the respiratory time-expiratory time ratio, or even hyperfrequency ventilation.

These maneuvers are painful for the subject and turn out, in reality, to be ineffective.

There are suitable ventilation systems which can be assisted ventilation in intensive care. These systems are then only reserved for patients requiring intensive care.

It can be considered that there is also a so-called positive expiratory pressure system constituted by a module placed on the expiratory side of a respiratory valve. This technique is not very flexible to use, not very flexible in adjustments to be made depending on the subjects and / or the field of use and above all unsuitable for use in an altitude environment in which it is it is necessary to be able to control a prior warming of the inspired gases to limit the respiratory convective losses, as well as a humidification of these gases to limit the dehydration linked to respiratory evaporation.

The technical solutions which can be considered as part of the prior art do not offer possibilities of flexible use and effective adaptation, nor even of adjustment of the pressure modulation according to the subjects, the activity or the environment.

The object of the invention is precisely to fill the present multifaceted gap by proposing a pressure modulating cartridge having the particularity of being easily adaptable on all respiratory masks, of being very easily adjustable, in particular in back pressure expiration without requiring long, tedious and delicate disassembly, to be light, to be easy to manufacture and maintain and to be resistant to variations in temperature and humidity, as well as aging over time, especially under the effect of ultraviolet rays.

To achieve the above objectives, the modulating cartridge according to the invention is characterized in that
  • the body delimits two successive chambers communicating by a passage crossed by a guide rod carried by the body, one of the chambers being in relation to the ambient medium while the second is with the mask,
  • the guide rod supports, in the first chamber, a movable exhalation valve, elastically controlled in the closed position of the passage and having transfer holes located opposite said passage,
  • the guide rod supports, in the passage, a movable inspiration valve, with a surface area less than the section of the passage and elastically controlled antagonistically to the exhalation valve to occupy a closed position of the transfer holes of said valve.

Various other characteristics will emerge from the description given below with reference to the appended drawings which show, by way of nonlimiting example, an embodiment of the subject of the invention.

Fig. 1 is a cross-sectional elevation of the modulating cartridge in accordance with the invention.

1. Fig. 2 is a cross section taken along line II-II of FIG. 1.

According to the drawings, the modulating cartridge, generally designated by the reference 1 , comprises a body 2 , preferably, but not exclusively cylindrical, made of a light material, resistant to shocks, to variations in temperature and to rays, in particular ultra -violets, so as to have a certain resistance to the aging of time. By way of example, such a material is preferably chosen from plastics and, more particularly, is made from polytetrafluoroethylene.

The body 2 is closed at both ends by elements of transverse walls 3 and 4 which can be made of the same material and be adaptable by screwing possibly associated with seals not shown.

The transverse wall element 3 is preferably made in the form of a solid wall cover while the transverse wall element 4 can be constituted by a simple cross, removable or not, or also by a screwable wall as illustrated in the drawings. In the latter case, the wall element has openings 5 bringing the internal volume of the body 2 into communication with a mask 6 on which the body is adapted by means of a groove 2a or the like presented by the body 2 in the vicinity of wall element 4

The body 2 delimits internally, in particular by means of an annular rim 7 , two successive chambers 8 and 9 communicating with each other by a passage 10 , for example circular delimited by the rim 7 .

Dans certains cas, il pourrait être prévu également de ménager des lumières dans l'élément de paroi transversale 3.The so-called inspiration-expiration chamber 8 is in relation to the ambient or surrounding environment by lights 11 which are preferably made in the part of the peripheral wall of the body 2 corresponding to the chamber 8 . In certain cases, provision could also be made for lights in the transverse wall element 3 .

The so-called transfer chamber 9 is formed between the rim 7 and the wall element 4 and communicates with the chamber 8 via the passage 10 and with the mask 6 through the openings 5 .

The wall elements 3 and 4 provide support for a guide rod 12 which crosses the passage 10 while being located, in the illustrated embodiment, concentrically with the body 2 .

The guide rod 12 supports, in the chamber 8 , a valve 13 which, in the example illustrated, is mounted to slide freely and is elastically controlled in the closed position of the passage 10 . In the example illustrated, the elastic servo-constraint is provided by a helical spring 14 threaded concentrically with the rod and placed under compression stress between the valve 13 and a stop 15 , so that the valve tends to be always applied against the rim 7 to close the passage 10 . To this end, as shown in FIG. 2 , the valve 13 is constituted by a disc made of a material of low density, of small thickness, threaded free to slide on the rod 12 and which may include tabs 16 extending radially to from the periphery 17 of the valve 13 . The actual effective diameter of the valve 13 , determined by the periphery 17 , is in all cases just greater than the section of the passage 10 .

It is advantageous to make it possible to adjust the elastic servo control constraint of the valve 13 by modifying the preload of the spring 14 . To this end, it can be envisaged to make the stop 15 adjustable axially on the rod 12 which can, for this purpose, include a threaded end portion 18 by which it can also be mounted in the transverse wall element 3 .

The stop 15 can also be fixed on the rod 12 which can then be made axially adjustable relative to the wall element 3 by means of a suitable end portion 19 and a locking means 20 such as a counter nut screwed onto the threaded part 18 .

It must, of course, be considered that all equivalent technical means for performing the same functions can be provided and chosen according to the objectives of ease of maneuver, resistance, etc. that they can present.

The exhalation valve 13 is provided with transfer holes 21 which can be circular and evenly distributed and which, in all cases, are circumscribed by an immaterial circle C whose diameter is less than the section of the passage 10 .

The guide rod 12 comprises, on the side of the transfer chamber 9 , a valve 22 called inspiration which is constituted by a disc of material of low density which is mounted free to slide on the rod 12 . The valve 22 has an outside diameter greater than the circle C , but less than the diameter of the passage 10 in which it can engage under the action of an elastic pre-stress member 23 acting on the valve 22 to tend to push it. still pressing against the exhalation valve 13 in a position for closing the holes 21 .

The elastic servo-constraint exerted by the member 23 is, in all cases, less than that exerted by the member 14 . By way of example, the member 23 is constituted by a helical spring threaded on the part of the rod 12 passing through the chamber 9 between the valve 22 and a stop advantageously constituted by the transverse wall element 4 .

The diameter of the valve 22 , in any case greater than the diameter C , is chosen to allow an annular gap 24 to remain with respect to the passage 10 , the function of which appears in the following.

It should be considered that the valve 22 can be subjected to an adjustable elastic servo-constraint by means which can be formed by a stop mounted for example with adjustable position on the guide rod 12 provided that it does not hamper free sliding. axial useful through element 4 .

The operation of the modulating cartridge described above is as follows. After adaptation on the mask 6 , the wearing of the latter by a subject tends to subject the cartridge to alternative variations in pressure with respect to the surrounding medium and with respect to the mask.

In the subject's inspiration phase, the spring 14 applies the valve 13 against the flange 7 to close the passage 10 , the holes 21 then being closed by the valve 22 .

When the subject breathes, a vacuum is established in the transfer chamber 9 and causes the valve 22 to recede against the antagonistic action of the spring 23 . The recoil of the valve 22 releases the holes 21 , so that the air from the surrounding medium is then sucked in through the ports 11 to enter the chamber 8 and engage through the holes 21 to pass through the passage 10 , the chamber 9 and the openings 5 .

When such an inspiration phase ceases, the work stored by the spring 23 is restored, so that the valve 22 is slaved elastically in the closed position of the holes 21 inside the passage 10 , while allowing the relative to the latter, the annular interval 24

When the subject goes into the expiration phase, the pressure build-up which is established in the chamber 9 is applied to the part of the exhalation valve 13 exposed to the annular gap 24 , but the valve 13 remains in the closed position. as long as the pressure developed is not such as to overcome the elastic servo-constraint provided by the spring 14 .

As soon as this pressure in the chamber 9 becomes higher, the valve 13 is urged to move against the action of the elastic member 14 to open the passage 10 and allow the reverse flow of the exhaled gases which escape after transfer to the medium ambient through chamber 8 and lights 11 .

As is apparent from the foregoing operation, the elastic servo-constraint imposed on the valve 13 makes it possible to generate or create a back pressure on expiration which is favorable to the establishment of good ventilation and higher oxygenation rate than natural breathing.

The adjustment of the back pressure is carried out by means of the stop 15 and allows any adaptation as a function of the selected application which may be the fight against hypoxia in the healthy subject placed in an altitude environment, improvement of oxygenation in healthy subjects at sea level, respiratory resuscitation of subjects with pathology at sea level, etc.

As said previously, in certain applications, it may be provided to associate the spring 23 with means for adjusting its elastic servo-constraint which, in all cases, antagonistic to that of the spring 14 , must be located at a level lower than this. An application can for example be that of respiratory functional rehabilitation.

As is apparent from the above, the modulating cartridge can be produced easily by molding in a plastic material chosen for its characteristics of resistance to significant variations in temperature, to shocks, to aging. Such a cartridge can be produced in the form of a compact module which can be easily sterilized, dismantled, cleaned, reconditioned, if necessary, in particular by the dismantling of the wall elements. cross 3 and 4 .

The fact of making the body 2 to delimit two chambers 8 and 9 which are ventilated by the alternating flows of inspiration and expiration, makes it possible to internally maintain a temperature maintained by such flows and capable of opposing the risks of freezing. internal at very low temperature and capable of immobilizing, in any inappropriate position, one and / or the other of the valves 13 and 22 .

The cartridge constitutes, moreover, a module having the effect, in particular in the case of use in a low temperature environment, of causing a heating of the gases during the transition and transfer period and, consequently, of improving the oxygenation characteristics in the pulmonary alveoli.

The invention is not limited to the example described and shown, since various modifications can be made thereto without departing from its scope. In this sense, it must in particular be considered that the movable and elastically controlled valves 13 and 22 can be mounted to be tilted or pivoted rather than sliding.
