Abstract

The procedure consists of applying a design to the cleaned surface of the stone, e.g. from a print or photographic reproduction on a lightweight paper (55 - 90 g/sqm). The paper is stuck to the surface of the stone with a water-bound adhesive, e.g. PVA, and a pressure of 500 - 800 kg/sq m is applied to it for a period of 2 to 5 hours. The pressure can be applied through a layer of foam, rubber or other flexible material, and a number of stone workpieces can be placed in a press (2) at the same time, sandwiched between layers (3) of flexible material. Following the application of pressure the stone workpiece is cut and trimmed according to the printed design, and finally coated with a cellulose varnish.

Description

The invention relates to a method of decorating a support consisting either of a natural stone, in particular a slate, or of a reconstituted stone, for example ceramic, this process consisting in reproducing a decoration on this support form of a photographic reproduction or any printed form.

The present invention will find its application in the field of producing decorative effects on supports which are, in particular, in the form of natural or reconstituted stones.

We have always sought to highlight certain photographic reproductions, whether because of their artistic quality or the loved ones they represent or because they evoke a memory or an event that marked us.

The most commonly adopted solutions for enhancing these photographic reproductions consist in framing them, possibly after having asked the photographer to enlarge them.

It is also customary to entrust a painter with a photo for reproduction on a canvas. In this regard, certain techniques, more industrialized, allow, at present, such a reproduction on such a canvas.

At the same time, it is more and more frequent to paint natural supports directly, such as stones, slates or tiles or even to decorate such supports by other techniques. Under these conditions, said support brings its contribution, from the decorative point of view, to the work thus produced.

Furthermore, it is also known through the European patent EP-A-0383125, a method for making reproductions of frescoes consisting in placing a reproduction of a photo corresponding to a fresco in a mold whose bottom consists of a glass . The back of this reproduction is coated with an adhesive before said mold is filled with a material based on water, sand and binder. After hardening of said material, the assembly is removed from the mold and can undergo a certain number of operations such as chipping of the contours or painting, so as to obtain as realistic an imitation as possible of a fragment of fresco.

However, the fact that the photographic reproduction is placed directly on a smooth and flat surface such as a window pane will result in giving the reproduced fresco only a smooth surface state, which is very rarely the case for a fresco real.

The present invention is intended to be able to develop a process allowing the enhancement of photographic reproductions or any other printed through such a support in natural stone or reconstituted in order to take advantage of the decorative quality provided by the latter.

It is the objective of the present invention to achieve this result without calling on the artistic talents of a painter and without it being necessary to have any film corresponding to the reproduction to be transferred to the support. . In fact, through the present invention it should be possible for everyone to be able to enhance a photographic reproduction or a print on a support in natural or reconstituted stone for a cost close to that of a frame.

  • on reproduit, à l'aide de moyens de reproductions appropriés le décor à l'échelle souhaitée sur une feuille de papier d'un faible grammage compris entre 55 g et 90 g/m2 ;
  • on encolle le papier portant la reproduction du décor avec une colle sous dispersion aqueuse ;
  • on dépose la feuille de papier encollée sur le support préalablement nettoyé ;
To this end, the invention relates to a method of decorating a support constituted by a natural stone, very particularly a slate, or a reconstituted stone, for example ceramic, consisting in reproducing, on this support, a decoration in the form of '' any photographic or printed reproduction, characterized in that:
  • the decoration is reproduced, using appropriate reproduction means, on the desired scale on a sheet of paper with a light grammage of between 55 g and 90 g / m 2 ;
  • the paper bearing the reproduction of the decoration is glued with an adhesive under aqueous dispersion;
  • the glued sheet of paper is placed on the previously cleaned support;
  • the assembly is placed under a press in order to subject it to pressure for a period of the order of two to five hours.

The method relating to the invention also consists, after drying the adhesive, in carrying out a certain number of finishing operations consisting in treating the edges of the support and in carrying out a varnishing, these different finishing operations being explained in more detail in the description which follows.

The advantages deriving from the present invention consist in that it is possible to enhance photographic or other printed reproductions in an original manner while taking advantage of the decorative aspect that a natural stone provides. than a slate, without calling on particular artistic talents or techniques which, because of their complexity prove to be too expensive.

  • La figure 1 illustre l'organigramme du procédé de décoration conforme à l'invention ;
The invention is described below in more detail using drawings representing only one embodiment.
  • Figure 1 illustrates the flowchart of the decoration process according to the invention;
  • Figure 2 illustrates schematically, the simultaneous press, of several supports.

The present invention relates, more particularly, to a method of decorating a support in the form of a natural stone, very particularly a slate, or of a reconstituted stone. In this regard, this support is likely to be made of ceramic for example.

In fact, it will be observed that this support must have at least one substantially flat surface in order to transfer decoration therein in the form of a photographic reproduction or any printed matter. The aim being to enhance this photographic reproduction or this print while taking advantage of the decorative aspect that a natural stone or a reconstituted stone gives, whether through its colors, its natural outline or even in in some cases, its irregular surface condition.

By way of example, slate is advantageously suitable for this type of application, this is particularly due to its dimensional characteristics and its planar configuration. In order to facilitate understanding, the method according to the invention will be explained below, in the context of its application for the decoration of such slates, knowing that it is preferable to use a so-called reinforced slate having a thickness of at least 3 mm, preferably of the order of 4 mm.

Thus, according to the invention, the method consists, first of all, of reproducing, using appropriate reproduction means, such as a photocopier, the decor, for example a photo, on the scale of its choice. . Note that for a color decor we will use a color photocopier knowing, in this regard, that the more the photocopy is of quality the better will be the result. Also, it is particularly recommended to use a color laser copier.

Ainsi, pour un format A3 (2 fois le format A4) l'on retiendra un papier du type 80g/m2.It should be noted, moreover, that the photocopying is carried out on light weight paper, of the order of 60 g to 80 g / m 2 , knowing that for a format of the A4 type, (21 cm x 29.7 cm) photocopying is carried out on a sheet of paper having a grammage of the order of 60 g to 70 g / m 2 , preferably between 63 g and 66 g / m 2 . This grammage will be slightly higher for larger formats. Thus, for an A3 format (2 times the A4 format), we will use a paper of the 80g / m 2 type .

At the same time, the surface of the support, and therefore of the slate intended to receive the decor, is thoroughly cleaned so as to ensure the removal of all dust and other particles. In the context, precisely, of a slate, this cleaning will also aim to remove the scales which are only weakly linked to the stone. This cleaning can be carried out by any suitable means, for example under compressed air flow. We will also take advantage of this slate cleaning operation to flake the edges.

The next step of the process consists, as it appears on the flowchart of figure 1, of gluing the sheet of paper, bearing the reproduction of the decoration by means of an adhesive, preferably in aqueous dispersion. Experience has shown that a glue based on polyvinyl acetate in aqueous dispersion makes it possible to obtain very good results.

It is important to carry out a perfect impregnation of this sheet before proceeding to the next step consisting in affixing it to the surface, previously cleaned, of the support, which in the case of the example corresponding to the description, is a reinforced slate.

This assembly is then placed under a press in order to subject it to a pressure of between 200 kg and 800 kg / m 2 and, this, for a period of approximately two to five hours. Note that the pressure applied is inversely proportional to the size of the support.

It should be noted that the surface of this type of support, which is a natural stone or a reconstituted stone, is frequently irregular. However, it is important that the pressure is exerted uniformly on this surface so that the sheet of paper closely follows the contours and, therefore, the irregularities of the surface on which it is affixed. In fact, it is this very particular relief that such a natural stone often presents, such as slate for example, which allows this original enhancement of photographic reproduction or any print.

To obtain this uniform distribution of pressure, it is transmitted to the support on which the sheet corresponding to the decoration is bonded, by means of a flexible material, such as a foam, rubber or similar mattress. Preferably, a support is sandwiched between two mattresses when it is placed under the press.

Since the assembly must be kept in press for a relatively long period, it may be appropriate, when there is only one press, as illustrated in FIG. 2, to place several supports 1 on which decorations were glued under the same press 2, systematically inserting a mattress of flexible material 3.

On leaving the press, the supports are dried before proceeding to the finishing operations which consist, if necessary, of a new cutting, to the desired shapes of the edges of the support, now decorated, this through appropriate tools. A grinding deburring operation can give a definite shape to the outline of this support.

In order to prevent the sheet of paper from peeling off at this contour, or even to re-glue the parts which may have peeled off during the abovementioned finishing operations, this contour is again glued using a brush, for example, and using the same glue previously used.

After this adhesive has dried, the outline can still be painted using a particular airbrush.

After this paint has dried, the decor is varnished. The varnish used is preferably of the cellulosic type.

Although the above description attaches more particularly to the decoration of a slate, the method according to the invention can find its application whatever the nature of this support as soon as it comes under form of a natural stone or a reconstituted stone.
