Description

The present invention relates to a connector for backplane wiring, consisting of a male connector designed as a one-sided open right-angled housing for plugging onto the knives of a backplane circuit board and a female connector that can be inserted into the male connector with receiving chambers and firmly connected to a module circuit board, the knives and springs being parallel in Several rows are arranged, the individual contact springs being surrounded by electrically conductive shield plates, which are connected to contacts in the intermediate grid both on the rear side and on the assembly side, which are acted upon by a corresponding potential.

Due to the fact that today and in the future ever higher data rates with ever higher frequencies have to be transmitted via the "connector" interface, it is necessary to refine the connector body, which is now made of plastic, and thus to make it EMC-compatible. The connector passage should be smaller and cheaper than a conventional mini KOAX.

So far, the necessary EMC measure has been achieved on the one hand using normal contact pins around an active conductor and on the other hand by encapsulating the individual contact passages by means of shield elements connected to a potential cage (see European patent application 94 103 192.4).

The connector known from European patent application 94 103 192.4 has a complicated structure with regard to its manufacture. The object of the present invention is to provide a connector of the type mentioned at the outset, the high-frequency properties of which meet the requirements suffice, and which is characterized by a relatively simple structure.

This object is achieved for a connector of the type mentioned in that the female connector housing consists of an electrically conductive material, and that the contact springs are arranged in isolation in the receiving chambers.

The plug connector according to the invention offers plug-in passages which are considerably smaller and cheaper than conventional mini-COAX plug connections and which meet all of today's requirements with regard to the transmission properties. The common housing, which is at ground potential or shield potential, is somewhat worse in terms of shielding effect than a pure KOAX connector, but far better than the previous pin arrangement.

An expedient embodiment of the connector according to the invention is characterized in that the female connector housing consists of an assembled and soldered sheet metal compartment, through which continuous receiving chambers with a rectangular cross section are formed. Such a female connector housing is relatively easy to manufacture and offers good shielding properties.

Another expedient embodiment of the plug connector according to the invention is characterized in that the female connector housing is formed from a one-piece, electrically conductive extruded profile with continuous receiving chambers. According to a further development of the invention, female connector housings produced in this way can e.g. consist of electrically conductive plastic, which results in considerable advantages in manufacture.

Further configurations of the connector according to the invention result from the further subclaims and from following description of several embodiments of a connector according to the present invention with reference to the figure.

In the drawing only the components necessary for understanding the invention are shown, i.e. primarily the basic structure of the female connector.

In Fig. 1, a female connector housing is shown, which consists of an assembled and soldered sheet metal compartment through which continuous receiving chambers 9 with a rectangular cross-section are formed. The sheet compartment is essentially slotted longitudinal and transverse sheets which are pushed into one another and then soldered. Shield contacts 41 can be provided at the intersections of the sheets, which are pressed into existing bores, for example. On the other hand, these shield contacts 41 are fastened in the printed circuit board 40.

Auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite des Federleistengehäuses können in die Rückwandverdrahtungsplatte vorgesehen sein.2 and 3 show a female connector 2, which consists of a drilled metal block. The through bores in this case form the receiving chambers 10 for the contact springs. Bores 44 for the shield contacts 41 are provided in the intermediate grid. These bores 44 are designed as blind holes in which the shield contacts 41 are fastened by means of press-in technology. The shield contacts 41 are used to fasten the female connector 2 in the circuit board 40 by means of press-fit technology. On the opposite side of the female connector housing can be provided in the rear wall wiring board.

Die in Fig. 4 und 5 dargestellten Federleisten wabenförmigen Rohrgebilde können mit einer glatten Ummantelung versehen sein.4 and 5 show cross sections through female connector housings 3 and 4, which are composed essentially of metallic tubes 28 and 29, or 30 and 31 honeycomb. In these female connector housings 3 and 4, the tubes 28 and 29 and 30 and 31 are soldered together. The tubes with the larger diameter, namely the tubes 28 and 30 form the receiving chambers 11 and 12, while the metallic tubes with the small diameters 29 and 31 serve to receive the contacts arranged in the intermediate grid. The receiving chambers of the female connector shown in FIG. 4 have a circular cross section, while the receiving chambers of the female connector shown in FIG. 5 have, for example, an octagonal cross section. The female and male connectors shown in FIGS. 4 and 5 can be provided with a smooth casing.

Another basic way of producing the female connector according to the invention is to form them from a one-piece, electrically conductive extruded profile, or to assemble them from several corresponding extruded individual elements, the individual extruded individual elements being connected to one another by means of tongue and groove.

The female connector housing 5 has continuous receiving chambers 13 with an octagonal cross section. Between the receiving chambers 13 bores 45 are provided in the intermediate grid for the necessary shield contacts. The female connector housing 5 shown in FIG. 6, which is formed from a one-piece, electrically conductive extruded profile, can either be made of metal or of electrically conductive plastic, or else e.g. made of plastic with a galvanically applied electrically conductive surface.

Auch hier weisen die einzelnen Einzelelemente Bohrungen 46 bis 50 im Zwischenraster für die Schirmkontaktierungen auf.7 to 11, individual extruded profile individual elements 17 to 27 are shown, which can be assembled into complete female connector housings 6 to 8, receiving chambers 14 to 16 being formed, which have the same shape as the receiving chambers 13 in female connector housing 5 of FIG. 6 . The individual extruded profile individual elements 17 to 27 are connected to one another by means of tongue and groove. It can already be seen from these few representations that the design of the individual extruded profile individual elements can be very diverse, which can be seen from the representation of a few examples, for which reason these are not to be described in more detail here. Here, too, the individual individual elements have bores 46 to 50 in the intermediate grid for the shield contacts.

The female connector housings shown here are intended to represent a type of female connector structure. The female connector housing 32 is a straight female connector housing, while the female connector housings 33 and 34 are angled female connector housings which consist of two or more than two parts.

In these figures it can be seen that on the receiving side of the female connector housing for the knives knife inlet funnels 38 and 39 are pressed onto the respective housing with spring leg stops made of plastic. These parts provide better guidance of the knives and at the same time prevent the plastic-coated contact springs from being pushed through when fitting the receiving chambers from behind. At the same time, they prevent a short circuit of the front part of the contact spring with the conductive female connector housing. The female connector housings 32, 33 and 34 shown are firmly connected to the respective printed circuit board 40 via shield contacts 42, 43 and 44.
