Claims (22)

  1. An apparatus for backing book blocks by mechanical means, the book blocks, having been rounded, being held in a clamped condition and being backed by means of a pressing beam which has a concave working surface and applies a pressing force to the book block spine, utilizing a load-bearing component with a carrier piece which serves as a means of mounting said pressing beam, and which can be caused to execute swinging movements, first to one side of the book block spine and then, in turn, to the other side, with the purpose of bending-over the printed sheets in the side regions of the book block spine, this apparatus comprising an arrangement (9-15; 16-18; 5b, 19, 20) which directs the load-bearing component (3) sideways in a defined manner and generates a tangential sliding movement of the pressing beam (6) onto the printed sheets in the side regions of the book block spine, this tangential sliding movement being superimposed on the swinging movement of said pressing beam (6).
  2. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1, comprising a rotationally-drivable controlling cam (10) which directs the load-bearing component (3) through the agency of actuating means (9, 11, 12).
  3. The apparatus as claimed in claim 2, comprising an adjusting arrangement (13-15) which enables the stroke distance of the sliding movement to be varied.
  4. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1, comprising a lever arrangement (16, 17) which acts via the carrier piece (5) carrying the pressing beam (6) and generates the sliding movement that is superimposed on the load-bearing component (3).
  5. The apparatus as claimed in claim 4, comprising a projecting portion (16) on the carrier piece (5) which serves as the means of mounting the pressing beam (6), said projecting portion (16) being pivotably connected to a fixed coupling rod (17) which acts on it below a notional center of rotation of said pressing beam (6).
  6. The apparatus as claimed in claim 4 or claim 5, wherein, having regard to varying the lever-arm length, the point at which the coupling rod (17) is pivotably attached to the projecting portion (16) can be shifted through the agency of adjusting means (16a, 17a).
  7. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1, comprising a track-type control arrangement (19, 20) which acts on the carrier piece (5) serving as the means of mounting the pressing beam (6), and which generates the sliding movement that is superimposed on the load-bearing component (3).
  8. The apparatus as claimed in claim 7, comprising side-located control tracks (20), against which rollers (19), associated with the carrier piece (5), run during the swinging movement, and further comprising resilient elements (25) which support the load-bearing component (3) laterally.
  9. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the load-bearing component (3) is guided on an arc-shaped movement path (21, 22), the radius of which and the radius of the working surface (6a) of the pressing beam (6) lie on the same central point and below the center of rotation of said pressing beam (6).
  10. The apparatus as claimed in claim 9, wherein the movement path is formed by two separated path segments (21, 22) which, having regard to pressing-beam working surfaces (6a) of different radii, are radially adjustable.
  11. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the load-bearing component (3), with the carrier piece (5) and the pressing beam (6), is vertically movable between fixed lateral guides (27), and said pressing beam (6) can be shifted in said carrier piece (5, 28), so as to execute a tangential sliding movement that is superimposed on the swinging movement.
  12. The apparatus as claimed in claim 11, wherein the pressing beam (6) is mounted concentrically within an intermediate carrier (28) which is associated with the carrier piece (5), such that said pressing beam (6) is freely shiftable and can be brought to a position where it bears against lateral stops (32) which are associated with said intermediate carrier (28).
  13. The apparatus as claimed in claim 12, wherein the distance through which the tangential sliding movement of the pressing beam (6) takes place can be adjusted through the agency of the lateral stops (32).
  14. The apparatus as claimed in claim 12 or claim 13, wherein the pressing beam (6) is laterally supported in the intermediate carrier (28), through the agency of resilient elements (31).
  15. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1, with a load-bearing component which is laterally supported against the action of a resilient element, so that a pressing force is generated with the purpose of bending-over the printed sheets in the side regions of the book block spine, this apparatus comprising a control system (36-40) which neutralizes the action of said resilient element (35) during the return stroke of the pressing beam (6) to the center of the book block spine.
  16. The apparatus as claimed in claim 15, comprising control systems (36-40) with tappet-like devices which enable pressure to be applied, in turn, to opposite sides of the load-bearing component (3) with the carrier piece (5) and the pressing beam (6), so as to switch the resilient element (35) from a supporting position, to a position in which the pressure is relieved, said resilient element (35) preferably being designed as a disk spring assembly.
  17. The apparatus as claimed in claim 15 or claim 16, wherein the disk spring assembly (35) is installed on a tappet-like device (36) and is supported, on one side, against a stop collar (38) which is associated with said tappet-like device (36), while on the other side it is supported against a sliding sleeve (39) which is guided on said tappet-like device (36) and carries a control roller (40) which is in functional association with a rotationally-drivable disk cam (37).
  18. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1 or claim 15, wherein the load-bearing component (3), with the carrier piece (5) and the pressing beam (6), can be directed, through the agency of working cylinders (43), from the supporting position and into the position in which the pressure is relieved.
  19. The apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 18, wherein the movement of the pressing beam (6) is controlled in a manner such that a once-only backing operation is performed on each side of the book block spine.
  20. The apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 19, wherein the working surface of the pressing beam (6) is given a convex configuration, or is designed to be flat.
  21. The apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 20, wherein the movement of the pressing beam (6) is controlled in a manner such that with the return stroke the pressing beam (6) is caused to lift away from the book block spine.
  22. The apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 21, wherein the center of rotation of the pressing beam (6) can be adjusted to a position above the book block spine.
