Abstract

The device for cross-cutting surplus ends (9) of strips (7) adhered to edges (5) of boards (3), comprises: a first bearing surface (2), for the edge (5) of the board (3) whereon the strip (7) to be cut is situated, provided with an anvil-like member (4); and a blade (18) moveable along an active stroke and a return stroke; in the former it moves from a first position which, relative to the anvil-like member (4), is situated at the side of a second bearing surface (14), to a second position in which it overshoots the anvil-like member (4); the second bearing surface (14) has an slot (16) adjacent the first surface (2).

Description

  • The invention relates to a device for cross-cutting strips, particularly the surplus ends of strips adhered to the edges of boards or panels of wood or chipboard, the device comprising a first bearing surface for the edge of the board whereon the strip to be cut is situated; a sharp end edge of said first surface, the border of which marks the correct cutting line; a second bearing surface perpendicular to the first surface; and a blade moveable along an active stroke and a return stroke, opposite to the former.
  • Boards or panels of wood or chipboard provided with an external sheet of veneer formed either of wood of a superior quality or plastic laminates or the like, are manufactured and supplied usually with the veneer only on the main surfaces thereof, with the four edges being initially uncovered, since the edge-finish may only be applied after the board has been cut to size in accordance with the contemplated end use thereof.
  • For an adequate finish, it is necessary to edge-finish the panels once cut to their final form with the corresponding strip of veneer material which will be adhered to all or part of said edges. This strip normally is made from the same material as the general panel veneer.
  • The strips used for the edge finishing of panels are normally wider than the edges of the panels to be edge-finished, since in this way it is more reliable and easier to edge-finish by adhesion of the strip, either cold or with the application of heat.
  • It is subsequently necessary to trim the width of the strip adhered to the edges of the panel to leave it adjusted exactly to the thickness of the panel, with removal of the surplus overhang.
  • There are tools specially prepared for this trimming of the surplus widths of the panel edge-finishing strips, which tools allow perfect results to be obtained.
  • Complementarily, the opposite ends of the edge-finishing strips applied to each edge of the panel must also be cross-trimmed, to adjust these ends to the exact length of each edge.
  • There are devices applied to this end trimming of the strips of the edges of veneered panels, but normally they are hard-to-handle devices which do not always cut well, apart from generally requiring that the ends of the strip already applied to the panel edge be trimmed after the strip width has been trimmed.
  • The device of the invention is characterized in that said first surface is provided with a hard metal, anvil-like member forming said sharp end edge; in that said blade, in the active stroke thereof, moves from a first position which, relative to said anvil-like member, is situated at the side of said second surface, to a second position in which it overshoots said hard metal anvil-like member; and in that said second surface has a slot or recess immediately adjacent said first surface.
  • The cutting device here proposed overcomes the above mentioned drawbacks, allowing for perfect trimming or heading of the ends of the edge-finishing strips by way of a uniform clean cut fully adjusted to the end of each edge of the panel, all with an easy reliable operation, which may be carried out either before or after trimming the width of the edge-finishing strip to adjust it to the thickness of the veneered edge.
  • The device of the invention comprises two flat bearing surfaces, one against the edge of the board to which there is already adhered the strip to be cross trimmed, while the second flat surface, perpendicular to the first one, will bear against one of the major faces of the panel itself. At one of the two ends of the assembly formed by these two flat surfaces there is a movable blade facing a counterblade acting as anvil when effecting the cutting operation.
  • Further advantages and features of the invention will be appreciated from the following description in which there is disclosed, without any limiting nature, a preferred embodiment of the invention, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
    • Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device of the invention;
    • Figure 2 is a rear side elevation view of the device;
    • Figure 3 is a cross section view on the line III-III of Figure 1;
    • Figure 4 is a side elevation view, in the direction of the arrow F in Figure 1; and
    • Figure 5 is a schematic perspective view of a board having an adhesive strip on one edge thereof from which the surplus strip portions have not been removed.
  • The present device is for use with boards 3 (Figure 5) in which at least one of the edges 5 thereof has a strip 7 adhered thereto, with surplus strip portions 9 which extend beyond the short sides 11 of the edge 5 and possibly surplus strip portions 13 extending beyond the long sides of the edge 5 of the board 3.
  • The device comprises a first surface 2 for bearing against the edge 5 of the board 3 on which there is a strip 7 whose ends 9 are to be trimmed. This first surface is provided with a hard metal counterblade- or anvil-like member 4, which is attached, for example, by means of screws 6 and nuts 8, and passages 10 have been provided for easy placing of the nuts 8. Therefore, this hard metal anvil-like member 4 may be removed either for replacement or for repair. The member 4 is provided with a sharp edge 12 forming the end corner of the first bearing surface 2 and this sharp edge 2 is obviously overshot by the surplus 9 of strip 7 jutting out beyond the short sides 11 of the edge of the board 3 to be edge-finished.
  • A second bearing surface 14 perpendicular to the first surface 2 serves to rest the device against the corresponding major face of the board 3. The second surface 14 has a hollowing-out or slot 16, situated immediately adjacent the first surface 2 and adapted to house any surplus width 13 of the strip 7 extending from the thickness of the board. Thereby, any possible surplus 13 does not prevent correct positioning of the board 3 against the second flat surface 14 and also in engagement with the first flat surface 2.
  • The device needs a blade 18, which is attached to a moveable member 20 preferably capable of a translational movement, i.e., a movement in which all the points thereof move in the same direction. The blade 18 is preferably attached to the member in a similar way as described for the attachment of the hard metal anvil-like member 4, i.e. by way of screws 22 and nuts 24, allowing also in this case the removal of the blade for replacement or for repair.
  • A structure 26 forms a housing for the moveable member 20 and there are guides 28, installed on the structure 26, facilitating the said translational movement.
  • During the translational movement of the blade 18, it covers an active stroke during which it cuts the strip and a reverse return stroke. The active stroke of the present device extends from a first position (shown in the figures) which, relative to the anvil-like metal member 4, is on the side of the second flat surface 14, to a second position in which it has overshot the anvil-like metal member 4. Thus, it may be said that during the active movement thereof the blade 18 is opposed to the anvil-like metal member 4, whereby the blade 18 acts against said anvil 4, producing a perfect cut of the surplus 9 of strip 7. A spring 30 urges the moveable member 20 (and therefore the blade 18) to the said first position.
  • To facilitate operation of the moveable member, there is provided a lever 32 capable of pivoting about a shaft 34 having its ends in the structure 26.
  • The reference signs inserted after the technical features mentioned in the claims have the sole purpose of facilitating the understanding of the latter and do not limit their scope in any way.
