    - a motor-reducing assembly (8) mounted at one end of the beam and of which the output shaft (17) is coupled to a transmission shaft (18) extending horizontally in said central space;
    - a succession of hooking means (20) for suspending the carrier bar (50) while being capable of varying the height thereof, each hooking means (20) comprising a chain sprocket (29) mounted coaxially on the transmission shaft (18) and driven in rotation thereby and a chain portion (21) passing over the chain sprocket (29), said chain portion being formed, irrespective of the height of the carrier bar (50), by a vertical run (21.1) of which the free end is hooked on the carrier bar (50) and a dead run (21.2) received in an associated receptacle (24).
  2. Apparatus according to claim 1 characterised in that the beam (2) is stiffened and cross-braced and its length is slightly greater than that of the carrier bar (50).
  3. Apparatus according to claim 1 or claim 2 characterised in that the motor-reducing assembly (8) is an electrically operated brake motor-reducing unit with incorporated torque limiter, the brake motor-reducing unit being accommodated in the central space (6) of the beam (2) so as to be integrated into the volume thereof.
  4. Apparatus according to claim 3 characterised in that the transmission shaft (18) is coupled directly at the end of the output shaft (16) of the brake motor-reducing unit (8).
  5. Apparatus according to one of claims 1 to 4 characterised in that each hooking means (20) comprises a housing (23) in which the associated chain sprocket (29) is journalled, said housing being fixed to the beam (2), preferably being suspended in the interior thereof.
  6. Apparatus according to claim 5 characterised in that the housing (23) is made in the form of two complementary half-shell portions (23.1, 23.2), the joining plane (Z) of which coincides with the vertical plane of symmetry of the chain sprocket (29).
  7. Apparatus according to claim 6 characterised in that the housing (23) is suspended from the beam (2) by a central plate (31) arranged at the level of the joining plane (Z) and the fixing of said central plate (31) is of pendulum type, with movement in the direction of the transmission shaft (18).
  8. Apparatus according to claim 6 characterised in that the housing (23) is suspended by way of resilient means (63.1, 63.2) from a stirrup (60) which is fixed with respect to the beam (2) and from which a central plate (31) arranged at the level of the joining plane (Z) is also suspended.
  9. Apparatus according to one of claims 6 to 8 characterised in that the two half-shell portions (23.1, 23.2) forming the housing (23) define a lower support edge (35) with which there co-operates one or other of two chain abutments (26.1, 26.2) serving to define the range of variation in the lifting height of the carrier bar (50).
  10. Apparatus according to one of claims 6 to 8 characterised in that the housing (23) or the central plate (31) which is associated therewith carries two sensors (68.1, 68.2) with which there co-operates, directly or by way of a yielding plate portion (70.1, 70.2) which is fixed with respect to said housing, one or other of two chain abutments (26.1, 26.2) serving to define the range of variation in the lifting height of the carrier bar (50).
  11. Apparatus according to one of claims 6 to 10 characterised in that the two half-shell portions (23.1, 23.2) forming the housing (23) support in the lower portion thereof a casing (65) on to which the chain receptacle (24) is hooked.
  12. Apparatus according to claim 11 characterised in that the casing (65) is supported by a lower edge (75) on a horizontal member (3) of the beam (2).
  13. Apparatus according to one of claims 5 to 12 characterised in that the transmission shaft (18) is interrupted at the location of each housing (23), the coupling connection between the adjacent portions being afforded by a splined shaft (28) passing through the housing (23), the associated chain sprocket (29) being fitted directly on to said splined shaft (28).
  14. Apparatus according to claim 13 characterised in that the beam (2) is constructed in the form of portions which are disposed end-to-end, including a first portion (2.1) incorporating the motor-reducing assembly (8) and a first housing (13) and at least one supplementary portion (2.2) incorporating one or two housings (13).
  15. Apparatus according to one of claims 1 to 14 characterised in that the beam (2) is itself suspended by rollers or wheels (32) from rails (33) which extend perpendicularly to the main direction of said beam so as to be capable of displacing the suspended scenery set or equipment perpendicularly to its plane.
