Definitions
- the invention relates to a security paper with a security element in the form of a thread or tape, which consists of a translucent plastic film with at least partially opaque coating and which has information in the form of visually and / or machine-readable characters or patterns.
- security threads Papers of this type are referred to below as security papers.
- the security threads used for this purpose consist of a wide variety of materials in the form of threads or tapes with a width of 0.4 to 10 mm. They mainly consist of plastic films, which are metallically coated, printed, colored or z. B. are provided with pigment-shaped substances. In addition, it is also known to give the security threads magnetic, fluorescent, X-ray absorbing and other properties by selecting appropriate substances.
- Metallic coated threads have recently been increasingly used for security papers. These threads, which are partially or completely arranged inside the paper, are almost invisible in the striking light. Because the light rays penetrating through the upper layer of paper are completely reflected on the metallic surface and diffusely scattered in the paper. In transmitted light, however, such threads appear as black stripes that differ from theirs Stand out clearly from the surroundings. Threads of this type cannot be imitated by printing on the paper. To increase the security against counterfeiting, it has also already been proposed to provide such aluminum-coated security threads with a micro-script (DE-OS 14 46 851). In practice, however, this has proven to be of little use, since this writing on the otherwise opaque security thread is not visible in transmitted light and is very difficult to recognize in incident light. Even if such security threads, as described in EP-PS 0 059 056, are introduced into the paper as so-called window threads, the microprint remains difficult to find in the printed paper.
- a translucent plastic film which can be colored, is provided with a full-surface opaque, in particular metallic, coating, in which recesses are produced in the form of characters or patterns.
- the thread can be seen in transmitted light as a dark stripe in the document, while the Stand out characters and patterns from their direct surroundings, the opaque thread coating, and additionally from the wider surroundings, the document material, as bright, possibly colored areas. The thread is therefore very easy to find in the document and the characters can be read at any time without tools if the size is appropriate.
- the invention is based on the object of producing a security paper with a thread-like or tape-like security element which offers a high level of protection against counterfeiting, but at the same time ensures that the security element and the characters are easily recognizable without technical aids.
- the security paper according to the invention has a security thread consisting of a translucent plastic substrate with a grid-like metal coating.
- This can be a periodic stripe pattern, for example, which can have any orientation with respect to the running direction of the thread.
- this security thread carries, in particular, visually readable information that spans several opaque, metallic areas and metal-free areas Intermediate areas extends. This means that the information, which can include any characters or patterns, is available as translucent, metal-free areas.
- This grid-like arrangement of the metal areas has the advantage that the frequent metal / non-metal changes make it possible to imitate the visual impression, if at all, only by means of complex techniques.
- the characters and / or patterns can also be composed of alternately arranged opaque and translucent areas.
- the translucent information components are in the area of the opaque background coating and the opaque information components are in the coating-free translucent intermediate areas, so that the information on the background pattern stands out in contrast.
- This type of representation also results in frequent metal / non-metal changes, the precise registration of which can only be mimicked using complex techniques.
- the security element according to the invention like all metallized security threads, offers good copy protection through the known incident light / transmitted light effect. Larger coherent metallic surfaces appear in the reflected light as dark spots in the paper, so that attempts have already been made to imitate this visual impression in the known security elements. Small metallic areas, such as the metallic characters described in EP-OS 0 279 880, are less noticeable in incident light, but are also difficult to find in transmitted light, so that it is difficult to check this authenticity feature.
- the security element according to the invention is due 50% of the background pattern consisting of opaque areas can be easily found and checked in the paper. Moreover, due to the grid-like arrangement of the opaque areas and the associated frequent changes between opaque and non-opaque areas, imitations of the visual impression in incident light can be prevented or at least made very difficult.
- Fig. 1 shows a security document 1 according to the invention, here a banknote into which a thread-like or ribbon-shaped security element 2 is woven in the form of a window thread, so that the thread comes directly to the paper surface at certain intervals, the so-called windows 3.
- the thread can also be completely embedded in the paper or be designed as a full-surface element.
- the width of the thread can be, for example, between 0.4 and 10 mm.
- FIGS. 2-8 show a section of a security element according to the invention in supervision.
- the embodiment shown in FIG. 2 consists of a transparent or at least translucent plastic substrate 3, which is provided with a strip-like metallization 4.
- Visually and / or machine-readable information 5 extends over a number of such strips and stands out from this background due to the correspondingly shaped recesses in the opaque strips.
- the metallic strips 4 can, for example, have a width of 200 ⁇ m and an orientation inclined by 45 ° with respect to the running direction of the thread, while the text thickness of the contrasting information can be 600 ⁇ m.
- the example shown in FIG. 2 has a coating-free edge area 6, which serves as a cutting tolerance during the production of the threads in the form of a web and, in particular when it is introduced as a window thread, ensures a uniform appearance of the thread in the window area. This edge area 6 can be dispensed with in the production of completely exposed or embedded threads.
- the orientation of the metallic strips can be selected as desired and, in a further preferred embodiment, is 0 ° with respect to the running direction of the thread, as shown in FIG. 3. Of course, the same applies to the selected stripe widths and font thickness.
- any other grid-like metal arrangements can also be used, such as, for. B. a grid of points or a grid of arbitrarily shaped geometric figures. It is only necessary to ensure that the extent of the metal areas and the font size of the information are coordinated with one another in such a way that the information contrasts with the background and is therefore recognizable.
- the information can also be composed of opaque and translucent areas which stand out from their respective surroundings. Such variants are shown in FIGS. 4-8.
- Fig. 4 shows a background pattern similar to Fig. 2, i.e. H. opaque metal strips 400 ⁇ m wide, inclined at 45 ° to the running direction of the thread, which have correspondingly shaped recesses 9 in the area of the characters.
- the information portions 7 located in the coating-free intermediate areas are given an opaque coating, which is also strip-shaped and has the same angular orientation.
- 5 shows the analogous case for a stripe-shaped background pattern running parallel to the running direction of the thread.
- FIG. 6 Another alternative is shown in FIG. 6.
- the plastic substrate 3 is subdivided into two subregions arranged parallel to the thread running direction.
- the upper area comprises the metallization 4, in which the translucent portions 9 of the information are provided.
- the opaque information portions 7 are located in the lower, coating-free area 8 of the plastic substrate 3.
- FIG. 7 A further variation is shown in FIG. 7.
- the plastic substrate 3 is provided with two metal strips 4 arranged symmetrically to the thread center and running along the thread.
- B. have a width of about 1.3 mm. These strips are separated from one another by an approximately 1 mm wide, coating-free region 8.
- the information superimposed on this background pattern has a font size of approximately 3 mm, a font thickness of 600 ⁇ m and extends over all three background areas.
- the information portions are shown in the form of cutouts 9, while the portions 7 located in the coating-free area 8 consist of opaque coating material.
- the background is formed by metallic bars 4, which are arranged on the plastic substrate 3 like a checkerboard.
- the readable information is composed, analogously to the variants described above, of cutouts 9 and metallic areas 7 and, viewed in the transverse direction of the thread, extends over at least one pair of metallic / metal-free areas arranged next to one another.
- metallized information portions 7 and the metallic background areas 4 with different metals of different intrinsic colors.
- other non-metallic layers contrasting in color and / or in gray tone when viewed in transmitted light can also contrast, such as e.g. B. opaque, preferably white layers of paint, shiny metallic layers, such as. B. nitride or interference layers, find application.
- Interference pigment-containing printing inks are also conceivable.
- the plastic substrate can be provided with non-opaque, preferably glazing printing inks in various colors and tints.
- the film can also be colored with appropriate colorants in such a way that transparency is retained in a part of the visually accessible spectrum.
- the luminescent colors can either be colorless in the non-excited state or have a body color that preferably differs from the color of the emission light.
- the characters or patterns appear colored only in the excitation light or change their color when the thread z. B. is viewed under UV light.
- Several luminescent substances emitting in different colors increase both the design possibilities and the security against forgery, since the analysis of each individual luminescent substance is necessary for exact imitation. This analysis can be made even more difficult in a simple manner by mixing the different luminescent colors or by printing them overlapping.
- the thread variants described can be produced by a washing process or another demetallization process, such as those used for. B. are described in EP-OS 0 330 733, to which reference is expressly made in this connection.

Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a security paper with a security element in the form of a thread or tape, which consists of a translucent plastic film with at least partially opaque coating and which has information in the form of visually and / or machine-readable characters or patterns.
Banknotes and other monetary documents such as checks, shares, travelers checks, check and credit cards, but also passports and identity cards are often secured against counterfeiting by inserting or applying so-called security threads. Papers of this type are referred to below as security papers. The security threads used for this purpose consist of a wide variety of materials in the form of threads or tapes with a width of 0.4 to 10 mm. They mainly consist of plastic films, which are metallically coated, printed, colored or z. B. are provided with pigment-shaped substances. In addition, it is also known to give the security threads magnetic, fluorescent, X-ray absorbing and other properties by selecting appropriate substances.
Metallic coated threads have recently been increasingly used for security papers.
From EP-OS 0 279 880 a security thread made of transparent film material is known, on which shiny metallic micro characters are provided. The micro-characters are not recognizable in reflected light due to the fact that the thread is completely embedded in the banknote. In contrast, only the characters can be seen in transmitted light, since the security thread itself is transparent. In the transmitted light, the viewer can only see a lettering that runs through the banknote, which is difficult to find due to the small size of the characters, its embedding in the paper mass and possibly a printed image above it. However, imitation of such a thread is difficult because of the small size of the micro characters.
In another security thread known from EP-OS 0 330 730, a translucent plastic film, which can be colored, is provided with a full-surface opaque, in particular metallic, coating, in which recesses are produced in the form of characters or patterns. The thread can be seen in transmitted light as a dark stripe in the document, while the Stand out characters and patterns from their direct surroundings, the opaque thread coating, and additionally from the wider surroundings, the document material, as bright, possibly colored areas. The thread is therefore very easy to find in the document and the characters can be read at any time without tools if the size is appropriate.
If such a thread is introduced into a security paper as window thread, it offers additional copy protection in the area of the windows, since the metallic gloss of the coating cannot be reproduced by a copying machine and the copy therefore reproduces these areas in black.
The invention is based on the object of producing a security paper with a thread-like or tape-like security element which offers a high level of protection against counterfeiting, but at the same time ensures that the security element and the characters are easily recognizable without technical aids.
This object is achieved by the features mentioned in the characterizing part of the main claim. Further developments of the invention are the subject of subordinate claims.
In a preferred embodiment, the security paper according to the invention has a security thread consisting of a translucent plastic substrate with a grid-like metal coating. This can be a periodic stripe pattern, for example, which can have any orientation with respect to the running direction of the thread. In addition, this security thread carries, in particular, visually readable information that spans several opaque, metallic areas and metal-free areas Intermediate areas extends. This means that the information, which can include any characters or patterns, is available as translucent, metal-free areas.
This grid-like arrangement of the metal areas has the advantage that the frequent metal / non-metal changes make it possible to imitate the visual impression, if at all, only by means of complex techniques.
As an alternative to the completely translucent representation of the information, the characters and / or patterns can also be composed of alternately arranged opaque and translucent areas. In this case, the translucent information components are in the area of the opaque background coating and the opaque information components are in the coating-free translucent intermediate areas, so that the information on the background pattern stands out in contrast. This type of representation also results in frequent metal / non-metal changes, the precise registration of which can only be mimicked using complex techniques.
In paper, the security element according to the invention, like all metallized security threads, offers good copy protection through the known incident light / transmitted light effect. The security element according to the invention, however, is due 50% of the background pattern consisting of opaque areas can be easily found and checked in the paper. Moreover, due to the grid-like arrangement of the opaque areas and the associated frequent changes between opaque and non-opaque areas, imitations of the visual impression in incident light can be prevented or at least made very difficult.
Further advantageous embodiments are explained with the aid of the figures. The orientation of the metallic strips can be selected as desired and, in a further preferred embodiment, is 0 ° with respect to the running direction of the thread, as shown in FIG. 3. Of course, the same applies to the selected stripe widths and font thickness.
Also, it does not necessarily have to be a striped background pattern, but any other grid-like metal arrangements can also be used, such as, for. B. a grid of points or a grid of arbitrarily shaped geometric figures. It is only necessary to ensure that the extent of the metal areas and the font size of the information are coordinated with one another in such a way that the information contrasts with the background and is therefore recognizable.
Derartige Varianten zeigen die Fig. 4 - 8.According to a further embodiment of the invention, the information can also be composed of opaque and translucent areas which stand out from their respective surroundings. Such variants are shown in FIGS. 4-8.
Fig. 4 shows a background pattern similar to Fig. 2, i.e. H. opaque metal strips 400 µm wide, inclined at 45 ° to the running direction of the thread, which have correspondingly shaped
Fig. 5 zeigt den analogen Fall für ein parallel zur Laufrichtung des Fadens verlaufendes streifenförmiges Hintergrundmuster.5 shows the analogous case for a stripe-shaped background pattern running parallel to the running direction of the thread.
Another alternative is shown in FIG. 6. In this case, the
A further variation is shown in FIG. 7. Here, the
In this case, the background is formed by
It is of course possible to design the metallized
Likewise, the plastic substrate can be provided with non-opaque, preferably glazing printing inks in various colors and tints. However, the film can also be colored with appropriate colorants in such a way that transparency is retained in a part of the visually accessible spectrum. By the use of luminescent colors can further improve the visual impression of this thread and make it more effective. The luminescent colors can either be colorless in the non-excited state or have a body color that preferably differs from the color of the emission light. The characters or patterns appear colored only in the excitation light or change their color when the thread z. B. is viewed under UV light. Several luminescent substances emitting in different colors increase both the design possibilities and the security against forgery, since the analysis of each individual luminescent substance is necessary for exact imitation. This analysis can be made even more difficult in a simple manner by mixing the different luminescent colors or by printing them overlapping.
Unless printing inks are used, the thread variants described can be produced by a washing process or another demetallization process, such as those used for. B. are described in EP-OS 0 330 733, to which reference is expressly made in this connection.
