Abstract
Description
- The invention relates to an openable window frame of the type in which edge portions of a pane or plate member are fixed between an external frame member and a separate internal glazing bead connected therewith, and having an operating device comprising a rotary handle mounted on one frame member for actuation of a latch bar via a transmission device for longitudinal movement of the latch bar between opening and closing positions, whereby latch members in connection with the latch bar are brought out of and into engagement, respectively, with a striking plate mounted in the corresponding main frame member, wherein the transmission device comprises a single coupling link with a relatively short effective arm length between a first rotary connection having a coupling arm rigidly connected with the rotary handle and a second rotary connection with a point on the latch bar laterally displaced in relation to the rotary handle.
- For provision of a pasquil operating device suitable for light frame structures, DK patent application No. 2065/90 describes an operating device of the above type in a compact design which is considerably less bulky than conventional pasquil mechanisms and thus causes only a minimum weakening of the frame member in which it is mounted. However, also this compact device requires the provision of a groove or recess in the frame member for receiving the latch bar and the transmission device and for serving as a housing for the operating device.
- Through a further development of this known compact embodiment of a pasquil mechanism, it is an object of the invention to provide a substantially simpler assembly of such a mechanism in an openable frame of the type indicated above, without any kind of strength-wise weakening of the frame structure, especially, but not exclusively, for use in connection with light frame structures of extruded aluminium or plastics profiles.
- With this object in view, according to the invention, an openable window frame of the type indicated is characterized in that the glazing bead is formed as an extruded profile bead, the cross section of which comprises a substantially U-shaped portion with an opening facing the corresponding main frame member, and is retained in a track of an inwardly projecting flange part of the external frame member, and that the operating device with rotary handle, latch bar, latch members, and transmission device is received in its entirety in the glazing bead with the latch bar and the latch members positioned in said U-shaped portion, the operating handle with associated coupling arm and the coupling link being mounted between two interconnected plate members, which are fixed in a stationary manner in the glazing bead, and openings for the latch members being formed in said flange part of the external frame member.
- At the assembly of the operating device in the glazing bead, the only intervention required in the actual frame profiles is the forming of openings for the latch members in said inwardly projecting flange part.
- Nor in the glazing bead does any remarkable weakening of the structure take place, as the glazing bead and the operating device may be designed so that the operating device may be slid up into the glazing bead through the opening in the U-shaped portion.
- In order to obtain a secure localization of the operating device in the glazing bead in connection with an openable window frame, wherein the external frame member comprises an extruded profile section, and wherein, for its retention in said track by snap engagement, the glazing bead comprises projecting engagement fins at the edges of the wall of said U-shaped part facing the main frame member, one of said plate members in a preferred embodiment of the invention comprises a projecting edge part which, when the operating device is assembled, is localized in a cut-away piece of one of said engagement fins in alignment therewith.
- In order to ensure that the glazing bead may function optimally as a housing for the operating device with a minimum of intervention in its profile parts, a further advantageous embodiment is characterized in that the cross section of the glazing bead on the side of the U-shaped portion facing away from the opening comprises a hollow space receiving the rotary handle and the transmission device, an opening having a length suitable for receiving said plate members being formed in the intermediate wall created by the bottom of the U-shaped portion, and an opening suitable for the rotary handle being formed in the opposite wall of the hollow space.
- The invention will now be explained in further detail with reference to the schematic drawings which show the details required for understanding the invention and relating to an embodiment of an openable glazed panel according to the invention and the associated glazing bead, in which
- Fig. 1 is a sectional view of the bottom part of the openable frame and main frame structure,
- Fig. 2 shows a longitudinal sectional view of parts of the glazing bead around the rotary handle and latch members of the operating device,
- Fig. 3 is a plan view from above of the glazing bead with operating handle,
- Fig. 4 is a sectional view along the line IV-IV in Fig. 3, and
- Fig. 5 is a plan view from below of the glazing bead with latch member and part of the latch bar.
- As shown in Fig. 1, the window frame of the embodiment shown comprises a substantially T-shaped profile section 1 having an
external profile wall 2 and an inwardly projectingflange part 3. Asealing strip 5 has been mounted in atrack 4 in theexternal profile wall 2 and constitutes the abutment of the external side of an edge portion of a sealed double-glazing unit 6, the oppositely positioned internal edge portion of which abuts asealing strip 7 which is connected with aglazing bead 8. - The frame profile section 1 may typically be a light profile section produced by extrusion or pultrusion and made of aluminium or a suitable plastics material.
- The
glazing bead 8 will usually be produced by extrusion of a thermoplastic material or another material having a low thermal conductivity and comprises aU-shaped portion 9 at the opening of which the glazing bead has projecting engagement fins 10 and 11 which serve to mount theglazing bead 8 in a track 12 by snap engagement in the projectingflange part 3 of the frame profile section 1. - In the embodiment shown, the bottom 13 of the U-shaped
portion 9 constitutes an intermediate wall to ahollow space 14 located above in theglazing bead 8. - As explained in detail below, the
glazing bead 8 constitutes the housing of a pasquil mechanism of which Fig. 1 only shows alatch bar 15 and alatch member 16 which, by longitudinal displacement of thelatch bar 15 between an open and a closed position, through anopening 17 formed for the purpose in the bottom of the track 12 in theflange part 3, may be released from and brought into engagement with astriking plate 18 which is mounted at the bottom of astriking recess 19 in amain frame member 20. Asealing strip 21 is mounted on 5 the vertical wall of therecess 19 and constitutes the abutment of the internal side of theglazing bead 8 in the closed position of the window. The parts of the frame and main frame structure shown are positioned at the side opposite to the hinge side and form, for example, the bottom members of the frame and main frame of a top-hinged window. - As it appears from the parts of a longitudinal cross-sectional view of the glazing bead shown in Fig. 2, the pasquil mechanism mounted therein comprises an 5 operating device with a
rotary handle 22 which may be turned between opening and closing positions about apivot 23 which is mounted between twomounting plates rivets 26. - The
rotary handle 22 projects through an opening 27 of the upper wall of theglazing bead 8 towards the aperture of the window and is connected with ashort coupling arm 28 which, in a first rotary connection comprising apin 29 fastened to the coupling arm, is connected with one end of ashort coupling link 30, the opposite end of which has a top for establishing a secondrotary connection 31 with a hole formed in thelatch bar 15 and laterally displaced in relation to thepivot 23 such as is known from the above DK patent application No. 2065/90. When therotary handle 22 is turned counter-clockwise in the direction of thearrow 32, thelatch bar 15 will thus be displaced to the right, as shown by thearrow 33, via the transmission formed by thecoupling link 30. - For assembling the operating device with the
rotary handle 22 and theassembly plates opening 27 for the rotary handle, an opening 34 suitable for the dimensions of theassembly plates glazing bead 8, which wall constitutes the bottom of the U-shapedportion 9 of the glazing bead where thelatch bar 15 and thelatch members 16 are mounted. - In order to obtain a secure localization of the
assembly plates projecting engagement fins 10 is also cut away from theglazing bead 8, oneassembly plate 25, as is best seen in Fig. 4, comprising a projectingedge flange 35 which is localized in the cut-away part of theglazing bead fin 10 at the assembly, whereby the operating device is anchored in the track 12 in the inwardly projectingflange part 3 of the frame profile section 1. - At either end, the
latch bar 15 has anend portion 36 with a reduced height, to which is swingably mounted alatch member 37 which, in the embodiment shown, consists of a folded semi-circular disc with sides positioned at either side of thelatch bar 15. - The
end portion 36 of thelatch bar 15 is guided in a U-shaped guide having abottom 38 andside walls 39 positioned closely to the sides of thelatch bar 15. As shown in Fig. 2, towards the operating device theside walls 39 have obliquely cutend edges 40, for example at an angle of 45°, which will constitute the abutment of thelatch member 37 at movement of thelatch bar 15 to the left in the direction of the arrow 41. - As best seen in Fig. 5, the
side walls 39 of the U-shaped guides are connected with relatively wide and elongated projectingflange parts 42 and 43, of which one serves for localization of the U-shaped guide in a cut-away part of theengagement fin 10 of theglazing bead 8 with the flange part 42 in alignment with theengagement fin 10. By recesses in the mutually facing sides of theflange parts 42 and 43 an opening 44 has been provided in alignment with the opening 17 in theflange part 3 of the frame profile section 1 for swinging out the latch member. The edge part 45 of the opening 44 facing the operating device is in this connection positioned so that at movement of thelatch bar 15 to the right in the direction of thearrow 46, said edge part 45 will constitute the abutment of the out-swinginglatch member 37 and thus release it from engagement with thestriking plate 18. - The
latch bar 15 with thelatch members 37 and the U-shaped guide is mounted as an aggregate unit, when theoperating handle 22 has been turned after mounting to a position where the coupling arm 28 and thecoupling link 30 turn downwards. In connection with this, a recess 47 has been formed in the upper edge of thelatch bar 15 to render it possible to edge the latch bar into place simultaneously with the U-shaped guides with theflange parts 42 and 43 being pressed into position in theglazing bead 8, after previously hooking thelatch bar 15 on thecoupling link 30 to establish therotary connection 31. - Only when this assembly has taken place, is the
glazing bead 8 arranged in the track 12 by snap engagement. The whole assembly takes place without the use of screws or the like.
