Description

The present invention relates to a folder intended to ensure the folding of documents to be placed in an envelope. It is particularly intended for office folding machines.

Pocket folders fold a document in half or three. They use two pockets, generally arranged in a V, coupled to a folding assembly formed by four rollers. This technology using a large number of mechanical parts generates, on the one hand, a considerable bulk and, on the other hand, poor accessibility during paper jams.

On this type of folder, the document strikes a stop located in each of the pockets to then be taken into account by the folding rollers. The impact of the paper on these stops generates a significant noise level.

The modification of the length of the folds is obtained by adjusting each pocket stop. The operator must intervene manually to make these adjustments.

Also known from documents JP-A-631 676 or GB-A-1 394 480 are bending machines comprising between upstream rollers and downstream rollers a movable guide between two positions which brings the paper alternately in front of a first or a second pair of downstream rollers, thanks to which the folds of the document are formed. However, these machines, by their large number of rollers and the complexity of the related controls, still pose problems of production and maintenance.

Document US-A-4 997 175 discloses a folder of the type comprising two upstream rollers for feeding paper, controlled by first control means, two downstream rollers for outputting paper controlled by second control means, a paper guide pivotally disposed between the upstream rollers and the downstream rollers, capable of taking a first and a second position, the guide in its first position directing the paper from the upstream rollers to the downstream rollers, and, in its second position, directing the paper from the upstream rollers to a location spaced from the downstream rollers, a pressure roller capable of being pressed against one of the two rollers when the guide is in the first position, an electronic control unit for synchronizing and controlling the guide pivoting and upstream and downstream roller movement.

By an appropriate set of roller movements, it is possible to make a fold. However, like the folding machines described above, this requires complex drive devices (in particular because some of the rollers must be bidirectional) and forms a bulky machine. The same applies to the folding machine described in document EP-A-0 421 547, especially when it is a question of making not one single ply but two pleats.

The object of the invention is to avoid the above drawbacks and to propose a machine of simple and robust design, generally more compact, which can also simply allow the realization of two folds or one, with a reduced total number of mechanical parts.

According to the invention, the folder is of the general type described above known from US-A-4 997 175 and is characterized in that the pivoting paper guide comprises, integral with its movement, said pressure roller, so that when the guide is in the first position, the pressure roller comes to bear against one of the two downstream rollers, and when the guide is in the second position the pressure roller is released from said roller, and the first and second control means and the control unit are coordinated to carry out the following steps:
  • c) passage of the guide in the second position,
  • d) driving in front of the upstream rollers to advance the paper through the guide by a first predetermined length, the front of the paper being released from the downstream rollers,
  • e) passage of the guide in the first position, so that the pressure roller presses the paper against one of the two downstream rollers,
  • f) driving in front of the upstream rollers to advance the paper through the guide of a second predetermined length and to form the beginning of a loop directed towards the downstream rollers,
  • g) drive in front of the downstream rollers to grab the loop start and drive the rest of the paper.

These means allow the production of a fold on a document.

It goes without saying that by roller, we mean both continuous rollers as discontinuous rollers or sets of rollers.

These means are advantageously supplemented so as to allow the production of a second fold, in the direction reverse. To this end, the first and second control means and the control unit are coordinated to carry out, before steps c) to g), the following steps:
  • a) passage of the guide in the first position
  • b) driving in front of the upstream rollers to advance the paper through the guide by a third predetermined length sufficient for the front edge of the paper to be gripped in the downstream rollers,
the subsequent forward drive of the upstream rollers during step d) having the effect of forming a loop initiator deviating from the upstream and downstream rollers.

This loop leader is laminated between the downstream rollers together with the loop leader formed in step f).

Advantageously, means are provided for detecting the paper, for example a cell detecting the passage of the front and rear edges of a document. This cell is preferably placed on the guide.

Other characteristics and advantages of the present invention will emerge from the description below of an exemplary embodiment illustrated in the attached drawings. In these drawings:
  • Figure 1 is a developed sectional view of a shutter folder according to the present invention.
  • Figures 2,3,4 show side views according to views F-F1 and IV-IV of Figure 1.

  • Figures 10,11,12,13,14 show side views during the different stages of folding in half.

The flap folder has a main structure formed by plates 1 and 1 'and spacers 2. The purpose of this box structure is to assemble and guide the various elements constituting the folding system.

La mise en rotation desdits galets est assurée par le moteur 6 de type pas à pas par l'intermédiaire du manchon d'accouplement 7.The part carrying the document to be folded comprises two axes 3 and 3 'linked in rotation by two synchronization gears 4 and 4'. These two axes, mounted on bearings, support four pairs of tangent rollers 5. Said rollers are coated with a flexible and adherent bandaga. The rotation of said rollers is ensured by the motor 6 of the stepping type by means of the coupling sleeve 7.

The guide or switching flap 8, making it possible to orient the document to be folded, comprises two main plates 9 and 9 ′ between which the document travels. They are made integral by the two lateral spacer plates 10 and 10 '. On the latter are screwed two pins 11 and 11 'allowing the rotation of said switch flap 8. The rotation of this assembly is due to the motor 12 mounted at the end of the shaft 11 by the coupling sleeve 13. Notches of clearance are made in the plates 9 and 9 'in order to avoid any collision with the rollers 5 for feeding the document during the rotation of the flap 8. Two coated rollers 14 and 14', free in rotation, are mounted on the axis 15. This axis, parallel to the axis of rotation of the flap 8, is linked to the plate 9 'by the brackets 16 and 16'. A reflection cell 17 is fixed to the plate 9 to scan the passage of the paper.

La mise en rotation des rouleaux de pliage est assurée par le motoréducteur à courant continu 20 via l'ensemble poulies-courroie crantée 21,22,23.The folding assembly, mounted downstream of the switching flap 8 consists of two tangent rollers 18 and 18 ′ coated with a flexible and adherent bandage. These two rollers are synchronized in rotation by two gears 19 and 19 '. The folding rollers are rotated by the direct current geared motor 20 via the pulley-toothed belt assembly 21.22.23.

The different stages necessary for obtaining a document folded in three appear successively in the figures numbered from 5 to 9.

In FIG. 5, the switching flap 8 is in the high position 24. The rollers 5 for feeding the document are started up. The document is first conveyed by a device located upstream of the folding system and not forming part of the invention. Said document is then taken over by the rollers 5 and then introduced into the switching flap 8. The microprocessor managing the movement of the document by the stepping motor 6 then receives the information of passage from the front edge of the document in front of the cell reflection 17. From this event, said microprocessor drives the motor 6 so that the document comes into abutment in the pair of rollers 18 and 18 '.

The switch flap 8 is then tilted by the motor 7 from the high position 24 to a low position 25. From the start of this rotation, the feed rollers of the document 5 are started. The document then forms the loop 26. It is by acting on the length of this loop, therefore on the number of steps taken by the feed rollers since they are started that the length of the folds is varied. When the quantity of document to be dispensed is reached, the control system stops the rotation of the motor 6 and therefore of the rollers 5.

The switching flap 8 is then tilted by the motor 7 from the low position 25 to a high position 24. The rollers 14 and 14 'then apply the document loop on the roller 18'. The document feed rollers 5 are then started up. This has effect the formation of a small loop 27.

The motor 6 performs the number of steps ensuring good pressurization of the loop 27 on the folding rollers 18 and 18 '. The microprocessor then triggers the rotation of the rollers 18 and 18 'via the motor 25. The loop 27 is thus laminated by the pair of rollers 18 and 18'.

The rollers 18 and 18 'continuing their rotation then laminate the loop 26 and then eject the document folded in three towards a receptacle located downstream of the folding system not forming part of the invention. The reflection cell 17 informs the microprocessor of the passage of the rear edge of the document. After a time guaranteeing the complete ejection of the folded document, the microprocessor stops the rotation of the rollers 18, 18 'and 5.

The different steps necessary to obtain a document folded in half appear successively in the figures numbered from 10 to 14.

In FIG. 10, the switch flap 8 is in the low position 25. The rollers 5 for feeding the document are started up. The document is first conveyed by a device located upstream of the folding system and not forming part of the invention. Said document is then taken over by the rollers 5 and then introduced into the switching flap 8.

In FIG. 11, the microprocessor managing the movement of the document by the stepping motor 6 then receives the passage information from the front edge of the document in front of the reflection cell 17. From this event, said microprocessor controls the motor 6 so that the rollers 5 unwind the required document length. It is indeed this length of document unwound which conditions the length of the folds.

The switch flap 8 is then tilted by the motor 7 from the low position 25 to a high position 24. The rollers 14 and 14 'then apply the document to the roller 18'. The document feed rollers 5 are then started up. This has the effect of forming a small loop 27.

The motor 6 performs the number of steps ensuring good pressurization of the loop 26 on the folding rollers 18 and 18 '. The microprocessor then initiates rotation 18 and 18 'via the motor 13. The loop 27 is thus laminated by the pair of rollers 18 and 18'.

Après un temps garantissant l'éjection complète du document plié le microprocesseur arrête la rotation des rouleaux 18, 18' et 5.FIG. 14 shows the final step: the rollers 18 and 18 ′ continue their rotation then eject the document folded in half towards a receptacle situated downstream from the folding system which is not part of the invention. The reflection cell 17 informs the microprocessor of the passage of the rear edge of the document. After a time guaranteeing the complete ejection of the folded document, the microprocessor stops the rotation of the rollers 18, 18 'and 5.
