Abstract

An escalator is formed of a plurality of steps traveling in a continuous conveyor between a pair of spaced apart skirt plates. Each step has lateral safety boundaries attached to the side edges thereof. Spring inserts are positioned between the outermost ribs of the tread plate and the riser of the step to maintain the safety boundaries in contact at all times with the skirt plates. Thus, differences in the distance between the skirt plates and deviations of the travel path of the steps are equalized and the air gaps between the skirt plates and the side edges of the steps are closed at all times. The material from which the safety boundaries are made is selected to provide the lowest possible friction losses and to prevent scraping noises during operation. However, the safety boundaries will wear down before the skirt plates and worn out safety boundaries can be replaced without having to dismantle the corresponding step from the step conveyor.

Description

The invention relates to an escalator with a mobile endless step belt guided between two base plates, with steps which have lateral safety delimitations, the safety delimitations being arranged as inserts on the body of the step, on the one hand forming a visible indication of the edge zones and on the other hand the air gap between the step and close the base plate at least temporarily.

It has always been the aim of escalator manufacturers to counter the well-known latent danger of pulling in clothing or shoes, which exist between the movable steps and the stationary base plates, by means of special safety precautions. Country regulations therefore stipulate as a minimum safety precaution to keep the distance between the edge of a movable step and the adjacent base plate as small as possible, whereby the maximum distance on one side must not exceed 4 mm. This requirement is relatively difficult to adhere to, because on the one hand, due to the movable step belt, which is guided as precisely as possible, and on the other hand, certain inaccuracies cannot be ruled out due to the base plates installed in spite of the partial lengths.

An escalator has become known from European Patent Specification No. 0 297 233, in which each individual step has lateral safety barriers which are mounted in such a way that the outermost rib of the safety barrier comes to bear against the base area when a passenger is stressed. The space between the outermost rib of this step and the base plate becomes local closed, the outermost rib sliding along the base plate while the step belt is moving.
A disadvantage of this invention is that the gap between the individual steps and the base plate is closed only where a passenger enters the side edge of the step plate or presses against the edge of the front part of a step by another force.

Another, similar safety device for escalators has become known from US Pat. No. 4,413,719, in which the lateral clearance between the end ribs of the moving steps and the stationary base plates is completely closed off by elastic plastic inserts. Since the margins between the movable step belt and the stationary base plates, as is known to vary due to inevitably resulting inaccuracies, a disadvantage of this invention is that the sliding and sliding plastic inserts on the base plates are pressed together to a greater or lesser extent, causing friction losses and whistling noises.

The invention has for its object to provide a safety device for the side edges of each step of an escalator, which always closes the air gap between the step edge and the base plate and glides along the base plate without great force and at the same time inaccuracies that are built in between the step band compensate for stationary base plates and the running step belt.

This object is achieved by the invention characterized in claim 1.

The advantages achieved by the invention can be seen essentially in the fact that the dangerous air gap between the mobile step belt and the base plates is closed at all times, and that normal inaccuracies between the mobile step belt and the base plates can be compensated for that friction losses caused by the safety boundaries sliding against the base plate can be kept negligibly small and that no sliding noises occur. The device according to the invention does not serve to guide the step belt laterally, but rather to let the steps run normally and to compensate for the lateral play which varies within small limits, in order to ensure that this play always remains closed. The material of the safety barriers can be chosen so that it is resistant to abrasion, but that the more easily replaceable safety barriers wear out than the base plates. In addition, the invention is readily suitable for renovating existing older systems with margins between steps and base plates that are no longer in accordance with regulations.

It is inserted in a recess 2.2 of the front part 4 of stage 2 and is also connected to the stage so that it can be pushed perpendicular to the direction of movement of stage 2 . Between a last ribs 4.1 of the end portion 4 and the safety barrier 10 a, a lateral force on the safety barrier 10 exerting spring insert 12 is disposed.

14. Die zwischen der äussersten Rippe 3.1 bzw. 4.1 der Stufe 2 und der Sicherheitsabgrenzung 13 bzw. 14 angeordnete Federeinlage 15 bzw. 16, drückt die Sicherheitsabgrenzung 13 bzw. 14 sanft an die Sockelplatte 5 an, gleicht Ungenauigkeiten der Sockelplatten 5 und des Stufenlaufes aus und sorgt dafür, dass der Luftspalt zwischen der Stufe 2 und der Sockelplatte 5 stets geschlossen bleibt.4 and 5, an embodiment variant of a safety delimitation 13 , 14 is shown in section, in which, for example, two screws 17 arranged in a line are fastened to the body of stage 2 perpendicularly to the direction of displacement of the safety delimitation 13 or 14 with the aid of the nuts 18 . The head of the screw 17 is precisely distanced from the base of the recess 2.1 of the step plate 3 of stage 2 by a shaft stop 17.1 and, together with an elongated hole 13.1 or 14.1 provided in the safety delimitation 13 or 14 , serves as a guide for the slidably mounted safety delimitation 13 or 14 . The spring insert 15 or 16 arranged between the outermost rib 3.1 or 4.1 of step 2 and the safety delimitation 13 or 14 , presses the safety delimitation 13 or 14 gently against the base plate 5 , compensates for inaccuracies in the base plates 5 and the stepped run and ensures that the air gap between stage 2 and the base plate 5 always remains closed.

The shaft of the socket screw 22 or 23 serves together with a corresponding bore 20.1 or 21.1 in the Safety boundary 20 or 21 as a guide for the sliding safety boundary 20 or 21 . The head of the socket head screw 22 or 23 limits at least the outermost position of the slidably mounted safety barrier 20 or 21 . Between the outermost rib 3.1 and 4.1 of the level 2 and the safety barrier 20 and 21 respectively arranged spring insert 24 or 25 presses the safety barrier 20 or 21 is also gentle to the base plate 5, similar inaccuracies of the base plates 5 and the step run and ensures that the air gap between stage 2 and the base plate 5 always remains closed. 6 and 7 show maximally compressed spring inserts 24 and 25 in the area of the narrowest places between the step band and the left and right base plates 5 and FIGS. 8 and 9 maximally extended spring inserts 24 and 25 in the area of the farthest places between the step belt and the left and right base plates 5 .

The escalator described above has a step belt which runs endlessly in a support body and has a large number of steps, which are connected in a pivoted manner to an endless step chain arranged on both sides. The step belt is deflected via upper drive sprockets and lower deflecting sprockets and has a walkable advance with a lower and an upper horizontal and an inclined running area and a return arranged concealed in the supporting body. The lead of the step belt is arranged between two side handrail balustrades and is guided past fixed base plates. Conventional escalators have an air gap on both sides between the movable step belt and the stationary base plates. This air gap must not exceed a certain prescribed size, but can vary slightly within this size, depending on the running accuracy of the step belt and the mounting accuracy of the base plates. According to the present invention, the left and right side edges of the tread plate and the left and right side edges of the front part of each step are equipped with sliding safety barriers. With With the help of a spring insert inserted between the outermost rib of the step body and the safety barrier, the safety barrier is pressed gently against the base plate. While the step belt is moving, the safety boundaries slide along the base plates, compensate for inaccuracies in the step run and mounting inaccuracies of the base plates and close the air gap on both sides of the step belt at any time without causing major frictional losses or rubbing noises. This practically eliminates the risk of getting caught between the moving steps and the stationary base plates.

It is readily conceivable, instead of the displaceability of the safety delimitation shown in FIGS. For example, interlocking profile guides 9.1 or 10.1 could be provided on the step body and on the safety boundaries with corresponding holding stops.
