Description

The invention relates to a motor vehicle headlight according to the preamble of patent claim 1.

A motor vehicle headlight working on the projection principle is known for example from DE-PS 36 40 773. In this motor vehicle headlight, the projection lens sits in front of the cover plate. Furthermore, motor vehicle headlights according to the preamble of claim 1 are on the market, in which a lens with a flat or curved surface sits between the cover plate and the projection lens. The purpose of this lens is to achieve an optical impression of the headlight that is the same as that of conventional headlights. These headlights do not work according to the projection principle, but only have a reflector, a lens and a cover plate. Compared to headlights that work according to the projection principle, these headlights have a reflector with a significantly larger diameter.

One sees, as described, with a headlight with a projection principle between the cover plate and the Projection lens in front of a lens, this leads to a relatively large depth of the headlight. This depth corresponds to that of the conventional headlamp. However, the gain in installation space that results for headlights of this type due to the significantly smaller reflector diameter is largely lost.

The invention has for its object to provide a motor vehicle headlight of the type mentioned, which works according to the projection principle, in addition to a cover plate has a lens and which is characterized by a small depth.

The invention solves this problem by the characterizing features of patent claim 1.

The penetration of the lens through the projection lens means that no additional space is required compared to such a headlight without a projection lens. In addition, the light emerging from the projection lens passes through the lens without loss of light. This only acts on the light emitted laterally by the projection lens and collects it to form a light ring which, in conjunction with the projection lens, gives a flat overall impression of the light source. The seemingly effective light area of the headlamp corresponds to that of conventional headlamps.

Since the lens only absorbs an insignificant part of the light emitted by the projection lens, it is not exposed to any significant thermal stress. It is therefore possible to manufacture the lens from transparent plastic and thus save weight. The spreading disc also increases the weight of the headlamp, measured on a headlamp working according to the project principle without a lens, only insignificantly.

Due to the relatively low weight of the lens, it can be attached to the edge of the reflector. It then changes the optical properties of the reflector only insignificantly even under mechanical load. Overall, this results in a design that is characterized by advantages in terms of production technology. The lens is attached to the reflector and can be used as a structural unit in the headlight housing.

In the drawing, an embodiment of the invention is shown.

It shows the only figure of a motor vehicle headlight according to the invention with a space-saving arrangement of a lens.

The motor vehicle headlight 1 shown in the figure essentially consists of the following parts:
An incandescent lamp 2, a reflector 3, additional reflectors 4 and 5 and a projection lens 6. The headlight 1 sits in a housing 7 and forms, together with other lights, not shown, a structural unit which is covered by a cover plate 8 to the outside.

In addition to these known elements, the headlamp also has a diffuser 9, known per se, which is provided with a central opening 10. The projection lens 6 passes through this. The position of the lens 9 with respect to the projection lens 6 is such that the light emerging from the headlight 1 passes through the opening 10 essentially freely and after the cover plate 8 occurs in the exterior of the motor vehicle. Only a small proportion of this light emerges laterally from the projection lens 6 and reaches the lens 9. From the front, ie viewed from the room illuminated by the headlight, the effective light exit surface of the headlight 1 acts as a surface through the edge 9 'of the Diffuser 9 is limited. Compared to the light exit surface, which is given by the outer dimensions of the projection lens 6, this light exit surface appears many times larger.

The space required by the lens 9 is approximately equal to the space due to the penetration, which is required without such a lens. Due to the small dimensions and the arrangement, the lens 9 can be made of plastic and be attached to the edge of the reflector 3 via a funnel-shaped additional reflector 3 '(not shown in detail). This results in a headlight that is characterized by an unchanged installation space in addition to a good visual appearance.
