  • the operation of the device is as follows: when rivet 8 is inserted, in the manner described above, by punch 9 into slab 10 to which it is to be applied, the lower end of the rivet projects beyond the slab by an amount such as to enable it to be inserted into the cylindrical guide housing consisting of the two semicylindrical cavities 7b of arms 7 which, at this stage of the sequence, are closed in the upper position, whilst rod 3a of cylinder 3 is retracted, slider 4 and therefore punch 11 integral therewith are lowered, and levers 6 are rotated outward (fig. 1,3b).
  • a limit switch signal releases a valve, which is self-evident and therefore not illustrated, to actuate rod 3a of cylinder 3 in its upward outgoing direction, whilst slider 4 and punch 11 move toward rivet 8 until head 11a of the punch has penetrated the cavity at the lower end of the said rivet.
  • rollers 5a begin to run on inclined planes 4a of slider 4 causing the rotation of levers 5 and 6, the free end of which pushes on pin 7a causing arms 7 to rotate and open, thus enabling punch 11 to continue its upward stroke and at the same time release the lower end of rivet 8, which under the pushing action of punch 11, which is continuing its stroke, opens out and penetrates the lower surface of wooden or like slab 10, thus achieving the definitive fastening of the said rivet.
