Definitions
- the invention relates to a fan drive for the radiator of a motor vehicle, the fan being mounted in a cooler-proof manner and being driven by the motor of the motor vehicle via a movable drive switch.
- a fan drive was known from German Patent 834 158.
- the power transmission from the motor to the fan takes place by means of a flexible shaft, i.e. a movable drive switch.
- the drive via a flexible shaft allows cooler-proof fan mounting and a largely independent arrangement of the radiator fan on the one hand and the motor on the other - the relative movements between the cooler unit and the motor are thus absorbed by the flexible shaft.
- the flexible shaft has various disadvantages: transmission power and drive speed are limited, and noise is also transmitted from the motor to the fan or the fan frame, which leads to undesirable noise emissions.
- the flexible shaft requires considerable installation space in the axial direction in order to enable the desired deflection in the radial direction.
- EP-A 0 426 318 shows a fan drive in which a fan shaft is driven by a water pump shaft via a complex coupling mechanism.
- the problem to be solved is that the fan shaft can have a radial offset with respect to the water pump shaft.
- This problem of the fan drive is to be solved by three different, connected coupling types, the first coupling type being a fluid friction coupling, the second coupling type being a hydraulic coupling, the coupling halves of which can be displaced radially with respect to one another, and the third coupling type consisting of an angularly movable elastic universal joint.
- Each of these three coupling types apparently has its own function to perform, ie the first coupling type enables torque slip, the second coupling type enables the shafts to be radially offset from one another, and the third coupling type enables the shafts to be offset angularly from one another.
- This solution is very complex, both in terms of weight and in terms of installation space, and therefore has considerable disadvantages, particularly when used in motor vehicles.
- a movement compensation device is provided in the drive train between the motor and fan, which absorbs relative movements, in particular in the axial and radial directions, and also angular movements between the drive train on the motor side and the fan drive.
- a fan clutch is provided for switching the fan on and off, which is preferably designed as a fluid friction clutch.
- the fan clutch can be mounted either in a cooler-proof manner or in an engine-fixed manner. Accordingly, the compensation device is located between the fan clutch and the motor or between the fan clutch and the fan.
- a radial fan can be particularly advantageous because it allows space-saving accommodation of the fan clutch when the fan wheel is mounted on the front.
- the compensation device is preferably designed as a rubber element, which is relatively torsionally stiff, but ensures adequate torsional vibration damping - primarily, however, the rubber element is intended to compensate for radial and axial relative movements between the input and output side in the drive train and also any angular deviations, that is to say if the axes are not in alignment with one another.
- the rubber element is preferably designed as a bellows or sleeve, the cross section of which is U-shaped (one fold) or S-shaped (two folds). At the same time, this rubber element decouples the noise between the motor and the fan or fan frame.
- the additional arrangement of openings in the bellows can reduce shear stresses in the bellows, in particular in the event of radial deflection, relieve the bearings and increase the air circulation, which results in better cooling of the coupling.
- the compensating device can also be formed by mechanical or metallic spring elements which are arranged to run radially and tangentially between a drive and an output disk and thus likewise permit corresponding relative movements in the radial and axial directions.
- the compensating device can also be formed by a coupling rod which articulates between an input and an output disk and thus allows relative movements in the drive train due to the kinematic articulation of the drive and output member.
- a brake magnet is provided on the cooler side, which can brake or stop the fan wheel or the fan clutch.
- a braking device is known per se from EP-A 0.407.749.
- the compensating device is a type of elastic or movable coupling that allows a sufficient offset of both coupling halves and thus permits the unavoidable relative movements between the engine on the one hand and the radiator fan assembly on the other.
- FIG. 1 shows a fan drive with a cooler 1, which - in a manner not shown - is acted upon on the primary side by the coolant of the coolant circuit of the internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle, and on the secondary side is acted upon by cooling air from the environment.
- a fan frame 2 is attached to the cooler 1, which serves to guide the cooling air behind the cooler 1 and which has a frame grille 6 with a frame hub 7 in the downstream region.
- This fan clutch 5 is supported by a fan shaft 9 and a fan bearing 8 in the frame hub 7, that is, the fan clutch 5 and the fan wheel 3 are mounted cooler-proof.
- the fan clutch 5 is driven via a drive shaft 13, which is connected in a manner not shown to the engine of the motor vehicle and is driven by it.
- a movement compensation device is arranged, which consists of a rubber element 11, which is S-shaped in cross section, that is, as a bellows with a radially inner and a radially outer fold.
- this bellows 11 are flange-shaped and on a driven pulley 10, which is attached to the fan shaft 9, and attached to a drive pulley 12, which is connected to the drive shaft 13, so that the torque introduced by the drive shaft is relatively torsionally stiff, but with sufficient damping on the fan shaft and thus via the fan clutch 5 is transferred to the fan 3.
- the formation of the rubber element 11 as a bellows ensures, however, that a radial and axial offset between the drive shaft 13 and the fan shaft 9 and any angular offset between the two shafts can be compensated. In this way, the relative movements between the engine block on the one hand and the cooling unit on the other hand can be compensated.
- FIG. 2 shows a similar arrangement for a fan drive: a frame 15 with a frame grid 16 is arranged behind the cooler 14 and has a frame hub 18. A bearing 19 is accommodated in this, via which the fan clutch 22 is supported by means of a bearing pin 20.
- the fan clutch 22 carries a fan wheel 21, which carries an axial blading, not shown.
- the fan clutch 22 is driven via the fan shaft 23, which in turn is connected to the drive shaft 27 via a rubber element 25 by means of a driven disk 24 and a drive disk 26, which in turn is driven in a manner not shown by the engine of the motor vehicle.
- the rubber element 25 is designed as a bellows and has the same advantages described in FIG. 1.
- cooling air openings 17 are arranged, which allow the cooling air to pass directly to the front of the fan clutch in order to cool it sufficiently.
- the latter is particularly advantageous if the fan clutch 22 is designed as a fluid friction clutch, which develops a certain amount of slip heat during operation.
- FIG. 3 shows a further embodiment variant for the fan drive: behind the cooler 28 there is a frame grille 29 which is connected to the cooler structure and has in its central region a frame hub 31 which carries a hollow pin 33.
- a fan wheel is supported on this via a fan bearing 34 via its fan hub 35, which carries a radial blading 37 on its support disk 36.
- This radial fan wheel 37 runs within a frame 32, which is designed as a spiral.
- the support disk 36 has air passage or bypass openings 38 which allow a secondary cooling air flow to be sucked in through the hollow pin 33.
- This cooling air bypass flows past the front of a fan clutch 39, which is fixed to the engine, ie, via the clutch shaft 40 on the engine block 42, for example in the water pump housing.
- the fan clutch 39 or the coupling shaft 40 can be driven via the V-belt pulley 41, which is driven in a manner not shown by a V-belt on the motor side.
- the fan clutch 39 which is preferably designed as a fluid friction clutch, is accommodated radially and axially within the contour of the radial impeller wheel, that is to say in a very space-saving design.
- a rubber element 44 is arranged as a movement compensation device, which is designed as a bellows with a U-shaped cross section (a fold).
- This bellows 44 has an annular flange 45 in its radially outer region and an annular flange 46 in its radially inner region, which are connected on the one hand to the cover plate 36 of the fan wheel and on the other hand to the housing of the fan clutch 39.
- FIG. 4 shows a further variant of the compensating device, namely in the form of mechanical or metallic spring elements 52, 53 which are fastened to a drive pulley 50 and a driven pulley 51 by means of joints 54, 55.
- spring elements 52 and 53 which can be designed as helical springs, and their kinematic articulation, radial and axial relative movements between the input and output disks 50 and 51 can thus be compensated, with torsional elasticity also being provided.
- FIG. 5 shows a further embodiment variant for the compensating device in the form of a coupling rod 62, which is connected by means of joints 63 and 64 to a drive disk 60 and a driven disk 61.
- This kinematic articulation also enables relative movements in the radial and axial directions between the input and output disks 60 and 61, with torsional stiff torque transmission taking place at the same time.
- FIG. 6 shows a further variant of the fan drive, specifically with a brake magnet 70 for braking the radial fan wheel 71.
- the latter is - as in the exemplary embodiment according to FIG. Fig. 3 - cooler-proof, ie mounted on a hollow pin 72 which is connected to the frame hub 73 of the frame grid 74.
- the brake magnet 70 is rotatably supported on the frame hub 73 via an annular flange 78, which receives the braking torque.
- An armature plate 77 which can be attracted by the brake magnet 70 and thus braked, is fastened to the support disk 75 of the fan wheel 71 via an axially movable spring washer 76 or individual spring elements.
- the support disk 75 has fastening bores 79 in its rear area which serve to receive fastening screws 80; Analog fasteners are provided on the circumference of the fluid friction clutch 85.
- the rubber element embodied as bellows 82 can be fastened via these fastening means are attached on the fan and clutch side, specifically via two ring flanges 81, 84, which are vulcanized into the outer regions of the bellows 82.
- openings 83 are provided in the bellows, distributed over the circumference, through which air can be drawn in from the outside for cooling purposes.
- these openings 83 which can also be designed as radial slots, also reduce the shear stresses in the bellows when it is deformed in the radial direction - the openings 83 then act as relief openings. As a result of these reduced tensions in the bellows, there is also relief for the fan and clutch bearings.
- fan blades 88 can be arranged on the rear side of the support disk 75 of the fan wheel 71, which increase the radial flow in the direction of the passage openings 89 in the fan wheel.
- an additional fan 87 can be arranged in front of the fluid friction clutch 85 and is driven via the drive shaft 86, which emerges as a shaft stub 86 ′ on the front side of the clutch 85. This has additional fan 87 - in comparison to the embodiment according to. Fig. 3 with secondary fan blading 43 - the advantage that it is driven at the higher drive speed of the clutch. It therefore also amplifies the secondary flow sucked in through the hollow pin 72 for cooling purposes.

Description
The invention relates to a fan drive for the radiator of a motor vehicle, the fan being mounted in a cooler-proof manner and being driven by the motor of the motor vehicle via a movable drive switch. Such a fan drive was known from German Patent 834 158.
In this known fan drive, the power transmission from the motor to the fan takes place by means of a flexible shaft, i.e. a movable drive switch. The drive via a flexible shaft allows cooler-proof fan mounting and a largely independent arrangement of the radiator fan on the one hand and the motor on the other - the relative movements between the cooler unit and the motor are thus absorbed by the flexible shaft. On the other hand, the flexible shaft has various disadvantages: transmission power and drive speed are limited, and noise is also transmitted from the motor to the fan or the fan frame, which leads to undesirable noise emissions. Finally, the flexible shaft requires considerable installation space in the axial direction in order to enable the desired deflection in the radial direction.
A 0 426 318 shows a fan drive in which a fan shaft is driven by a water pump shaft via a complex coupling mechanism. The problem to be solved is that the fan shaft can have a radial offset with respect to the water pump shaft. Each of these three coupling types apparently has its own function to perform, ie the first coupling type enables torque slip, the second coupling type enables the shafts to be radially offset from one another, and the third coupling type enables the shafts to be offset angularly from one another. This solution is very complex, both in terms of weight and in terms of installation space, and therefore has considerable disadvantages, particularly when used in motor vehicles.
It is an object of the present invention to improve a fan drive of the type mentioned in such a way that today's requirements for a motor vehicle corresponding power transmission from the engine to the fan is ensured, which is sufficiently dimensioned, low-noise and low in particular in terms of power and speed has axial space. This object is essentially achieved by the features of
According to an advantageous development of the invention, the fan clutch can be mounted either in a cooler-proof manner or in an engine-fixed manner. Accordingly, the compensation device is located between the fan clutch and the motor or between the fan clutch and the fan. In the latter embodiment variant, a radial fan can be particularly advantageous because it allows space-saving accommodation of the fan clutch when the fan wheel is mounted on the front.
The compensation device is preferably designed as a rubber element, which is relatively torsionally stiff, but ensures adequate torsional vibration damping - primarily, however, the rubber element is intended to compensate for radial and axial relative movements between the input and output side in the drive train and also any angular deviations, that is to say if the axes are not in alignment with one another. For this purpose, the rubber element is preferably designed as a bellows or sleeve, the cross section of which is U-shaped (one fold) or S-shaped (two folds). At the same time, this rubber element decouples the noise between the motor and the fan or fan frame. The additional arrangement of openings in the bellows can reduce shear stresses in the bellows, in particular in the event of radial deflection, relieve the bearings and increase the air circulation, which results in better cooling of the coupling.
In a further embodiment of the invention, the compensating device can also be formed by mechanical or metallic spring elements which are arranged to run radially and tangentially between a drive and an output disk and thus likewise permit corresponding relative movements in the radial and axial directions.
Furthermore, in a further embodiment of the invention, the compensating device can also be formed by a coupling rod which articulates between an input and an output disk and thus allows relative movements in the drive train due to the kinematic articulation of the drive and output member.
Finally, according to an advantageous development of the invention, a brake magnet is provided on the cooler side, which can brake or stop the fan wheel or the fan clutch. Such a braking device is known per se from EP-A 0.407.749.
In principle, the compensating device is a type of elastic or movable coupling that allows a sufficient offset of both coupling halves and thus permits the unavoidable relative movements between the engine on the one hand and the radiator fan assembly on the other.

Figure 1 shows a fan drive with a cooler 1, which - in a manner not shown - is acted upon on the primary side by the coolant of the coolant circuit of the internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle, and on the secondary side is acted upon by cooling air from the environment. A fan frame 2 is attached to the cooler 1, which serves to guide the cooling air behind the cooler 1 and which has a frame grille 6 with a
FIG. 2 shows a similar arrangement for a fan drive: a
FIG. 3 shows a further embodiment variant for the fan drive: behind the cooler 28 there is a
FIG. 4 shows a further variant of the compensating device, namely in the form of mechanical or
FIG. 5 shows a further embodiment variant for the compensating device in the form of a
FIG. 6 shows a further variant of the fan drive, specifically with a
To further improve the cooling, in particular the
