Abstract

A method for transferring a pattern onto a decorative film, comprising an organic material such as polyvinyl fluoride, in particular for the interior of an aircraft cabin by the transfer printing process. In this method, for transferring the pattern, the decorative film is brought into close contact with a pattern carrier, which contains the pattern formed by organic dispersive dyes, contact being established by pressing with a textured mat in between, and transfer of the pattern taking place by diffusion when heat is applied. The invention consists in that the decorative film (2) to be printed has a textured surface and the colour transfer takes place at a temperature at which essentially there is still no plastifying of the film surface and the textured mat (4) consists of such a compliant material that, when pressure is applied, the pattern carrier (3) comes into close contact with the decorative film (2) even in the depressions of the texture. <??>In this case, it is particularly advantageous that not only photographically recorded patterns but also the line patterns hitherto applied by screen printing can be transferred in this way to the films and consequently to the structural members and reductions in cost are obtained by virtue of the fact that the pattern carriers of paper can be produced more advantageously by the rotary process than by the screen printing process. <IMAGE>

Description

The invention relates to a method for transferring an image motif to a decorative film according to the preamble of claim 1.

Such films are applied to lightweight composite panels that are used as interior parts of aircraft cabins. These films show a layer structure with a cover layer consisting of polyvinyl fluoride with a structured surface. The surface structure can be, for example, artificial leather or grained. The lightweight composite panels are made of fiber-reinforced plastic and, depending on their intended use, have a flat or curved shape. For decorative design, the structured decorative films can be printed using the screen printing process. In principle, only single or multi-colored line motifs can be produced due to the printing process. It is not possible, for example, to apply photographic motifs to the foils in question. However, it is known to transfer such motifs, for example onto acrylic glass plates, by means of the transfer printing method known per se.

Hierbei wird dem zu bedruckenden Gegenstand gewissermaßen eine Oberflächenstruktur aufgeprägt.EP 01 10 220 A2 shows a corresponding method for transfer printing onto solid objects made of plastic or with a surface layer made of lacquer or plastic from a flat ink carrier at a temperature suitable for dye transfer while pressing the ink carrier against the surface of the object to be printed, the flat Ink carrier is pressed onto the surface to be printed during the dye transfer by means of superatmospheric gas pressure, and the surface is kept at a temperature below the thermoplastic range. This ensures that the originally shiny surface of an object to be printed is retained. For this purpose, on the one hand the property of certain types of acrylic glass is used, that when heated they change into a thermoelastic but not a thermoplastic state, on the other hand certain measures are given to keep the color or motif carrier in contact with the object only for a short time bring. The use of a felt cloth, which can be found in this document, is intended for the case in which the object is to be given a matt surface by the printing. In this way, a surface structure is stamped on the object to be printed.

Hierdurch wird die Aufgabe gelöst, auch Formkörper aus thermoplastischen Kunststoffen zu bedrucken, ohne daß deren Form wegen der für die Durchführung des Verfahrens nötigen Temperaturen zerstört wird.DE-OS 27 31 121 shows a process for the production of binder-free prints on surfaces of molded articles made of thermoplastic materials with disperse dyes, the dyes first being printed onto an intermediate carrier using the usual printing techniques and the pressure from this intermediate carrier being brought into close contact and under simultaneous application of heat is transferred to the surface of the molding, a temperature sufficient for sublimation and diffusion of the dyes being used. This solves the problem of also printing molded articles made of thermoplastic materials without their shape being destroyed because of the temperatures necessary for carrying out the process.

The transfer printing processes mentioned are not suitable for printing on an object with, for example, an artificial leather-structured surface in such a way that perfect color transfer also takes place in the deeper structural valleys.

Accordingly, the invention is based on the object of specifying a generic method in such a way that it enables the transfer of an image motif in transfer printing to a decorative film with a structured surface, with a perfect color transfer also taking place in the structure valleys.

This object is achieved in the generic method by the characterizing features of claim 1.

It is particularly advantageous that not only photographically recorded motifs but also the line motifs previously applied by screen printing can be transferred to the components and cost reductions result from the fact that the motif carriers can be made of paper using the rotary process more advantageously than in the screen printing process.

Advantageous developments of the invention are specified in the subclaims.

The invention is illustrated by way of example with reference to the drawing and explained in more detail below.

The picture shows an exploded view of an arrangement for carrying out the method, consisting of an article table 1, a decorative sheet 2, a motif support 3, a structural mat 4 and a tenter 5 with a vacuum cloth 6. For transferring the color motif from the motif support 3 to the decorative sheet 2 the items shown are stacked on the item table 1 in the order shown. The clamping frame 5 lies sealingly on the article table 1, so that the decorative film 2, the motif support 3 and the structure mat 4 are located within a cavity enclosed by the article table 1 and the vacuum cloth 6. This cavity is connected to a vacuum pump so that the air trapped here can be pumped out. When a negative pressure of about 0.9 bar is reached, the vacuum cloth 6 is pressed firmly against the structural mat 4, so that the motif support 3 is also pressed firmly onto the decorative film 2. As a result of the resilience of the structural mat 4, the motif carrier 3 comes into close contact with the decorative film 2 even in its structural valleys. In this state, the entire stack is now heated to 130 ° C. to carry out the diffusion process. After a period of 5 minutes, the process is complete, so that the decorative film 2 provided with the motif can be removed after the stack has cooled and the vacuum cloth 6 has been vented. With this decorative film 2, the structure valleys of the surface are also "printed" perfectly. This new effect is achieved by the vacuum cloth 6 in connection with the structure mat 4. The motif on the motif carrier 3 consists of customary transfer colors based on organic dispersive dye molecules. All suitable organic materials come into consideration as materials for the decorative film 2, such as polycarbonate, polyamide, polyurethane, polyether ether ketone, polyether imide or polyvinyl fluoride. In the event that the decorative film has a layered structure has, it is sufficient to achieve good results if their cover layer consists of one of the aforementioned plastics. A suitable needle felt, known for example under the designation RC 3000, is used as the structural mat 4 in the method described above. The temperatures and process times to be observed depend on the materials used. The specified 130 ° C are required to achieve a perfect color transfer. In the case described above, the cover layer of the decorative film 2 consists of polyvinyl fluoride.

It is conceivable that plates can also be printed by means of the specified method, these consisting at least in the area of the surface to be printed from one of the aforementioned plastics.

It is also conceivable that the structural mat 4 consists of a rubber-elastic material, for example silicone rubber. This opens up the possibility of applying the required contact pressure in a heating press, which would result in shorter working cycles.

The invention is not restricted to the exemplary embodiments shown and described. Rather, it extends to all configurations that are conceivable within the scope of the claims.
